Missouri collects donations to help with Joplin tornado relief

The Missouri football team didn't have any players or coaches specifically affected by the deadly tornado in Joplin, Mo., on Sunday, but that doesn't mean that the state's largest university isn't planning to help.

On Saturday, several Missouri football players and coaches will be at D. Rowe's restaurant in Columbia, Mo., with the team's semi truck (used to carry equipment on game days) to collect items to take the 239 miles down to Joplin to help in the relief effort. The list of requested items, according to Missouri sports information director Chad Moller, includes, but are not limited to:

Flashlights
Batteries
Rubbermaid containers
Trash bags
Band-Aids
Neosporin ointment
Bottled water
Basic toiletries.

Of course clothing, canned food items and monetary donations are also appreciated.

Speaking of clothing, the University of Missouri also is selling T-shirts for $15 that read: "One State. One Spirit. One Mizzou. 5.22.11"

All of the proceeds go to the Heart of Missouri United Way — United For Joplin fund.

While none of Missouri's players or coaches may have been directly impacted by the tragic events in the southern part of the state, at least two of the media members who cover the team were. Mike DeArmond of the Kansas City Star grew up in Joplin and his mother still lives there. His son Gabe DeArmond, who runs the Rivals Missouri site, PowerMizzou, tells of his ties to the area in a piece on his website.
