Major unexpected coaching schwerves tonight while the Doc's beloved Saints were falling victim (twice!) to the most ridiculous rule in sports, the NFL's spot-of-the-foul pass interference travesty, en route to blowing a late lead at Chicago. First, in connection with that game, ESPN Radio in the Windy City reported this afternoon that Syracuse has hired Saints offensive coordinator Doug Marrone, who has the balls to agree to an obviously doomed toss play on 4th-and-1 with the game potentially on the line in the fourth quarter and is not afraid of taking on the hopeless Orange. The tireless Donnie Webb back in New York confirmed later that Marrone is all but a done deal.

Second, and much more potentially bowel-shaking in the college ranks: A television station in Mobile has been told Auburn will name Will Muschamp its head coach sometime Friday. Yes, the same Will Muschamp who, only a year removed from extreme exuberance on the Plains, signed a lucrative deal to succeed Mack Brown at Texas just last month. Apparently, he didn't have any better idea than anyone else that the big chair at his old haunt would open up before the ink was dry on his deal in Austin. But you know how it goes, Longhorns: Just when you think you've got the kid figured out, BOOM!

And, if that's not stunning enough at bedtime, both Tennessee's Rivals site and the Toledo Blade are reporting recently fired Vol offensive coordinator Dave Clawson will be named head coach at Bowling Green on Friday. This is indeed the Clawson whose only season in Knoxville ended with UT ranked 115th nationally in total offense and Phil Fulmer's entire coaching staff getting the axe at one of the lowest points in Volunteer football history. The Falcons were duly impressed.

More on these shocking developments in the a.m.

My 2 fav teams-Saints and AUburn.
I love the Saints but don't follow them that closely, so I don't know if Marrone is a big reason for the Saints offensive prowess, and how he will translate to the Cuse.
More importantly... think its 50/50 that Muschamp leaves. I used to live in Mobile, that is a reputable TV channel that is reporting this. It could also be that Gary Patterson was being interviewed, not Muschamp, making Fox 10 totally wrong( a la OU OC Wilson to Miss St instead of UF OC Mullen). Muschamp has also repeatedly said he is staying at UT, so he would look slimy if he reneged now. I think Muschamp would be an excellent hire for AU, not as good as Leach or Paul Johnson, but excellent nonetheless. Muschamp has never been a head coach, but neither was Bob Stoops or Mark Richt . The best thing about Muschamp is his passion, his Defenses were great, but his passion would make him a great head coach. If this turns out to be true(I say 50/50), and he hires a good OC, then BOOM!!!... AU will be right back in the SEC championship picture.

If Muschamp does indeed leave, might this short-circuit the recent coach-in-waiting trend? It seems if the "coach-to-be" title doesn't keep guys around, it might be foolish to make the financial commitment to these guys.

Holy hell ... if Muschamp does leave, that's a double dagger to Texas fans.
Incidentally, I disagree with you on the spot PI penalty. Having it be an only 15-yard penalty encourages players to tackle receivers if they think they're going to be beaten deep.

Quit crying about the saints! 3 years 3 loses in Chicago. What about Greg Olsen getting assualted in the end zone (NOCall!); what about the fake punt that was a catch ruled incomplete. Calls go both ways As Da coach would say SHUT UP and play the game!

I think the coach-in-waiting thing only makes sense if the coach has a clear end point on the horizon. Like Alvarez at Wisconsin naming his replacement before his last season.
I think the Rich Brooks and Bobby Bowden situations may work out okay too. But Texas was just silly.

What a surprise! Auburn doesn't hire the black coach.

Muschamp isn't going anywhere. Trust me. He belongs in Austin and will stay in Austin. He will have a NC in his future here. Hook 'Em.

Hokie: I very, very rarely see a DB intentionally tackle a receiver in college. If you're in position to do that, usually you can still make a play on the ball. If he does tackle the guy, that's a smart play by him, and it's still a 15-yarder and automatic first down.
I've complained about this for years; I am on the record as hating this rule long before it crushed my favorite team. I have a problem giving the offense 40 yards without accomplishing anything. Last night, those two plays were the Bears' offense; Chicago's longest actual gain was 20 yards and Kyle Orton's passer rating was like 49.2. But they picked up 90+ and a touchdown/winning field goal on the PI calls. It's too much of a penalty -- like 30 years for shoplifting or something. It just doesn't fit the crime.
The college rule is a vastly better rule, because it doesn't guarantee the offense points because of a flag; holding penalties don't do this, facemask penalties don't do this, roughing the passer and other personal fouls don't do this. Why is pass interference allowed to have such a huge consequence? I think all college rules are better (except two feet in-bounds and coaches' challenges), but this one especially. I've always hated this rule and always will, even when it finally works in the Saints' favor.
TimAllen: Agreed on the fake punt: Should have been a catch. I thought bad calls went both ways, too. But I'm not arguing with the PI calls. I'm arguing with the rule.

Doc, the Saints also got hosed by the NFL's one-sided and unfair overtime rules. Luckily I gave up on them weeks ago, so that loss only created a hollow pain in my soul, not, say, the gut-wrenching misery of watching Casey Dick lead his tea down the field to throw a last second touchdown pass on your supposedly NFL-ready defense.
