Three years in, it's probably unfair to label Vidal Hazelton a bust -- he did catch 50 passes as a sophomore in '07, four for touchdowns -- but given his recruiting hype out of Hargrave Academy, he hasn't looked anything like the next great USC receiver, either.

A big part of that is a series of injuries, which, according to Hazelton's dad, have plagued Vidal from the moment he stepped on campus. There's nothing unusual about that in a high-speed, high-contact sport -- except that Dexter Hazelton thinks his son's ailments have been handled somewhat, shall we say, lackadaisically by the Trojan staff. And after Vidal came away from a five-catch, 33-yard effort in the opening win over Virginia a little gimpy, Papa Hazelton decided to open up on Pete Carroll in civil but overtly simmering fashion on Labor Day, in an e-mail that made the USC rounds online Thursday:

Dear Coach Carroll:
[...]
I am at a complete loss for words because my son, Vidal, has not receivedâ¨treatment on his ankle and quadriceps since the team's return to Los Angelesâ¨on Saturday evening. As you know, Vidal suffered a contusion to his quadriceps muscle and sprained his ankle during the UVA game. To date (forâ¨over 36 hours), (1) his ankle has not been X-rayed and (2) he has receivedâ¨no treatment to either injury, other than having a boot placed on his ankle.

I must admit that I am completely perplexed by the lack of attention your⨠training staff is giving to Vidal's injuries. When I asked Vidal if he received treatment today, he told me that the training room is closed today.â¨In all of my years of associating with athletes, and corresponding withâ¨athletic trainers, I have never heard of a training room being closed on aâ¨holiday during the sport's season. This includes Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, etc.

You and I have discussed my dissatisfaction with the manner in which Vidal has received treatment for injuries in the past. Most notably, the double hernia that he played with for all of the 2007 season, and possibly the 2006 season - an injury that went misdiagnosed for the entirety of the season(s).â¨Given our discussions, I trusted that corrective action would be taken. However, this is clearly a policy issue that has not been addressed, and theâ¨results are intolerable.

Certain recommendations and rhetorical questions re: trust ensue, marked for emphasis by excessive question marks. "Repeat negligence" and "an intolerable policy issue" is a harsh criticism from a parent for any school, especially one that no doubt sells itself in large part as a state-of-the-art NFL training ground. Maybe that's why Hazelton's letter found its mark so quickly: he said Thursday that Carroll called later the day the message was sent and assured him Vidal was getting whatever "treatment" he required.

Not that it's done him much good on the field. Since that letter was written, the younger Hazelton has responded by barely getting into a game. He didn't catch a pass against Ohio State or Oregon State and has missed the wins over Oregon and Arizona State altogether. At least someone's looking after him.

I would like to see both sides of this story but I never will. There has been some bad blood between Vidal's father dating back to the recruiting period. Vidal choose USC but his father wanted PSU. There was a delay in the LOI and many stories surfaced.

So sorry Papa Hazelton, but Vidal is not going to make that seven-figures on the gridiron. But I am sure he got a great education at Hargrave and is taking advantage of his free ride at USC to be well-prepared for a non-football future. Also, last I heard they have student healthcare at USC, so if sonny really had a legitimate need for medical attention he would have gotten it. Face it Pops, you're just mad because nobody gave you a big new house to live in.

Yeah, I'm thinkin' there's two sides to this story - - - and am kinda surprised that efforts were not made (and I'm not sure they weren't) by the writer to get both sides.
I played college ball - - - there never seemed to be a problem with getting treatment for any athlete (football or other - men's or women's).
The trainers are there to help, that's their job, and they actually like doing it.
    Sounds fishy to me.

another somewhat critical comment about usc and as usual the trojan fans are taking carrol's side without checking anything out. there are so many stories about this program it's a wonder they can get any recruits. where there is smoke there is ysually fire. i say shame on the usc staff after repeated letters on the same subject .HAZELTONS FATHER SHOULD SUE CARROL

I am not defending Carroll as a coach or a human being. I actually disapprove of the practice of these big schools recruiting top prospects 2 or 3 deep at every position. It dilutes competition, and since many of these recruits are, to be kind, marginal students, they are just getting exploited with little hope of even benefiting from the educational opportunity. But this is just a case of a parent who looks at his kid as a meal ticket, and is ticked off because he isn't a big star with agents drooling all over the family. If there was really any merit to this, he could find a dirtbag lawyer who would file a complaint on contingency.

YEAH VTROG..."sue em"!!! If the poor kid can't make the big bucks catching footballs then let Pop sue, sue, sue!!! There are plently of dirtbag lawyers in SO Cal who went to UCLA and hate USC, heck I bet there are some of those slimy bastards who went to SC that would sue em. The kid should have listened to Pop and went to PSU, or maybe VT. I wondered what you would say if the same thing happened if he played there? Do they have lawyers in Virginia? Hey, where does VT rank in the polls anyway? Oh...ah, no wonder the kid didn't choose to play at VT.

vtrog, of course there are so many stories about SC. It is one of the most storied, decorated programs in CFB history. Its easy to see why so many question their enormous success. I'm not taking sides but maybe this is a good lesson for young Hazelton. Maybe they don't hold your hand at SC like they do at other programs. Sounds like he might want to take matters into his own hands and check on that student health care. It will be good practice for the real world...which is where he will be headed in a couple years cuz from the looks of things now he won't sniff the NFL.

The bigger story is medical care for student athletes who get injured and who pays and for how long. As football is big business at these schools, there needs to be a clear understanding that the school is reponsible for all injury treatments and if severe and long lasting, for the life of the student. It should be simialr to workmans comp.

Typical responses from typical loser sc types. Class is something you'll never be accused of having. Talk on trojies, your own words speak volumes...
I'm sure if it was your son, you'd surely have similar points of view. Joe Pa may not be running an NFL breeding ground, but class and education ARE a part of the football program.
Talk on trojies. Show the world how disgusting you are...

I'm quite a clean guy. Not very disgusting. I where my deodorant and take showers daily. Its funny how fans at schools that obviously arent doing as well as USC criticize their fans because they are backing up their program. From what I've read so far most are keeping an open mind that theres probably two sides of the story and I'm sure there is. Dont hate the fans, hate the success and that goes for any team thats successful.
When a 5 star recruit who gets heavily recruited and gets a lot of publicity during that process doesnt live up to that hype during college, I'm sure there some regrets, even a lot maybe. Its not like Vidal hasnt had his chances. This year i thought USC would be led by a resurgence at the WR position with vidal hazelton and damian williams as the 1 and 2 respectively. obviously only one has lived up to my expectations, but of course you cant play well if your hurt.
I have no idea where Im going with this, but I will say I am disappointed that USC has not reshirted Vidal yet. He is obviously not going to be 100% the rest of the year and we have got a nice trio of WR's with many waiting their turn to get in the rotation like Ausberry. This probably has something to do with the transfer rumors although I hope its not.

is this SNL?? haha..poor Vidal and his dad...having their son on full scholarship hurts worse than one would expect. He shouldn't have to deal with "team medical staff." He should be at UCLA Medical Center with top-notch specialists at his beck and call. Wasn't that in our "agreed contract?"

From what I saw the father was complaining about a lack of medical attention to his son. Which obviously would upset any parent. If there's any truth to this then USC should be ashamed of themselves. I haven't heard of any other school not giving their atheletes the best possible medical care so this is a little disheartening. But of course until both sides are given a chance to voice their opinions I'll take what I read and keep an open mind that it might not be what it's cracked up to be.

Stop right at the point that the dad believed that the training room was closed? In season.? I know that UVA did not offer much competition to the Trojans, but surely someone was bruised.
In 30+ years as a player or coach, from big time schools to Div II, I never witnessed a closed training room during the season. Never. And it hasn't happened at SC or any other college.
The kid is a liar and his dad is a fool.

Not a USC fan and this seems like a father who needs to let his boy play with the real world a little. Daddy is upset about something. Wonder how much the upset father is hurting the kids chances of getting cleared and playing a more significant role?

To me it seems that a bunch of you are defending Carroll on the premise that there's no wrong doing on his part. I'm sure with all of his talented kids in surplus some can fall off radar........Unless it's the most important player on the team.(QB) Has anyone looked at the fact that the kid went the whole 07' season with a unreported double hernia. I agree with Steve A. transfer! But we should not bash his father for having legitimate concern for his son. And to spew out rhetoric such as " Just because he won't be making millions now" seems cruel! Especially without knowing they're financial situation. His letter seemed as if he had some educational background mostly! Hazelton will not break USC either way, so this will all just go away anyway. Peace

Life can't be all that bad for Vidal. You know he's gotten a chunk of change from the boys over there at USC. How else do you get 5star kids to come somewhere and ride the bench behind two other 5star guys? Problem is, if Vidal doesn't get going, the money train will stop the day he graduates.

Having been a student athlete I hear, understand, and empathize with everthing the elder Hazelton is saying. That being said, use your personal insurance to get him the proper care send him to another school (so he can sit out a year and heal properly) and call it a day. When football is concerned most schools have an assembly line like mentality when it comes to injuries. I mean, how good can the healthcare be for all all 84 players with 6-8 trainer trainees? Theres no knocking on USC or Pete Carrol. Dad has to use his common sense. I mean if barber sucks you get a new one; pure and simple. The same is for healthcare.
