Michigan State 25, Wisconsin 24. Wisconsin scored first, never trailed, outgained the Spartans by more than 100 yards with a 256-yard rushing advantage and led 24-13 with just over eight minutes to go. With 1:19 to go, the Badgers led by two with MSU needing to drive the length of the field from its own 17. They still led with the clock winding under 20 seconds and the timeout-less Spartans trying to hustle their field goal unit into place on fourth down. Right down to the closing seconds, Bret Bielema had his team's second straight upset win in hand.

Why did Bielema then call an unfathomable timeout to give Bret Swenson and his blockers time to compose themselves for the 44-yard sickle into his crew-cutted skull? There is no decent explanation, but that was only the last in a string of misfortune down the stretch. There was also, immediately preceding Swenson's kick, the wide open 20 and 32-yard passes allowed by the Badger defense to set it up; just before that, Wisconsin's offense was hit with three penalties in four plays, one of them negating an icing first down run inside the Spartan 10, that backed the Badgers out of scoring range and forced a punt from the MSU 41 instead. On the Spartans' previous drive, Swenson buried a 50-yard field goal to cut the Badger lead to two. That immediately followed Wisconsin's third three-and-out in four possessions. You can trace the narrow path of defeat backward from the point Wisconsin expanded its lead to 24-13, and every step had to go exactly as it did to give Michigan State a chance.

So maybe Bielema's just unlucky, to an extent. But he's also 1-5 in the Big Ten with blown 19 and 11-point leads against teams from the state of Michigan and an awful home blowout at the hands of Penn State. This is exactly the way Michigan State used to lose games in the star-crossed, schizophrenic John L. Smith era, and it means Wisconsin is on the verge of missing a bowl game for the first time since 2001 and only the second time since the program's breakthrough season in 1993. I guess you really can spend 59 minutes in control and end up worse.

Miss a bowl game? They need to win 2 against Minny, Indiana, and Cal Poly. My money is on them being bowl eligible.

Michigan State is one of the most underrated teams in the BCS they could of easily scored two more touchdowns. BAD reciving held them back from a great season this year, RINGER FOR HEISMAN

Really what can we say, barely loose to MI, Ohio State, and now again to Michigan State some of it being unlucky but a good portion of this can be taken to Mr. Bielema and his staff and the way they handle the last few minuets of a game. Come on its 4th down they have no time outs and they need to rush there players out to attempt a 44 yrd field goal, why in the hell do you give them a chance and call a time out. It would have sucked if they made it without the time out but at least we wouldn't have given them the opportunity to set up and take their time vs rushing.
Maybe just maybe Barry's experiment isn't working out. Not saying we need to get ride of him but after having a pretty good run its hard to watch them loose game in and game out!

would have been a good win by state if the receivers kept their eyes on the ball, terrible receiving this game, a constant was Blair, plus Hoyer actually played well, it won't be seen by the stats because of previously stated drops by the receivers. But a good game until the very end. Finally Spartans are tuning around and now finally have shaken some of its tendencies and have good backing by fans instead of let-downs, it is truly awesome.
    GO WHITE!!!

If you saw the game you'd know that State should have been much closer much sooner... but the ref missed 2 pass interference calls.
Did Bielema blow it? Yeah, he did... he should have forced the Spartans to try a hurried field goal. But this type of thing has gone AGAINST Michigan State for so many years it is refreshing to see them get a break.

Michigan State probably wouldn't have had to win in the last minute if they hadn't mad some major mistakes like dropping an easily catchable TD pass and dropping a fake punt. Bottom line is that State should have won the game and they did. GO STATE!

Hey, #1... he didn't say they wouldn't be bowl-eligible. He hinted they might miss a bowl berth. Lots of teams every hear put together 6 wins and find themselves staying home for the holidays, shut out in the cold by the bowl committees.

Sure the time out was a dumb call but what Bielema is going to have a hard - a very hard - time explaining is the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty earlier. Had MS backed up, momemtum going the Badgers' way and he shoots hos mouth off - probably the f-bomb! Wonder how he feels now knowing the entire state and alumni - like me - around the country want him fired after 3 more games. We got spoiled with the major bowls. The Motor City Bowl is not something the team and fans would be proud of. All in all, one of the worst coached football games of all time at any level. Pathetic.

i'm just glad someone wrote an article about what this MORON did. he should be fired for how his team plays. don't forget to mention they had 12 penalties. so not only can he not call plays, but he has an undisplined team. he can't ride alvarez's coatails anymore.

Totally agree with nrpm4242. Pathetic is too kind of word to explain what happened. Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State should all have been wins. The blow outs to Penn State at home and Iowa are not excusable for a team that tries to pawn itself off as a Top 25 program. Change needs to happen or Wisconsin will end up on the bottom of the Big 10 standings yearly. I don't see that sitting well in Madison anymore!

Let's put it this way, Wisconsin Football is all about winning games and not CHAMPIONSHIPS (except Big Ten). Why in the hell do I say this ? Ohio St. plays USC ( a power house ) Michigan plays Notre Dame (almost always tough) granted they lost last year to a Div. II school, but at least Wisconsin still loads up with CalPoly and Akron and UNLV. Even if USC, TEXAS, OKLAHOMA were to lose 2 games each they would still have a better chance then the Badgers (even if we went undefeated) to get into a National Championship game because of the weak sisters we play in every single year. Until the Badgers get a tough schedule they can go to hell ! I would rather lose a blow-out game to USC or a close game to Noter Dame, then blow out a CalPoly !

I don't know how many times MSU tried to give the game to Wi. They missed numerous passes, blocked poorly and all, but never gave up. Wi. played the other way. They gave up and lost the game by stupid mistakes. It's good to see the tide turn and MSU get some breaks. Still I'm worried, it's the second game in a row Big Ten officials shaded against MSU by bad or missed calls. Also, MSU fans support your team, you sounded pretty quiet throughout the game until the end. Winners need a winning fan base and you're their extra player.
