Either the Cap'n is close to finalizing a deal with Auburn, according to "a source with knowledge of the situation," or he's negotiating a new contract with Texas Tech as we speak, according to Tech AD Gerald Myers. Neither source under the circumstances is necessarily more reputable than the other. (Of course, Leach could be playing both off of one another for mighty booty. He's a shrewd one, the double-crossin' scalawag.)

If Leach goes to Auburn, I call dibs on Chris Todd for next year's fantasy roster. The same rag-armed wonder who completed barely 50 percent of his passes and was benched with a 5:6 TD:INT ratio when Tony Franklin was fired is good for at least 35 touchdown passes under the guru who originally recruited him. Book it.

UPDATE: Un-book it: Birmingham News says Leach is out, but the Tigers might be interested in extending Houston Nutt's eastward march through the division. After the "Pine Box" fiasco a decade ago, if Auburn snatches another well-liked coach from across state lines, it might as well realize: For Ole Miss, of course, this means war.

Who Cares!!!! Talk about an over-rated coach. Coach of the Year in the Big 12 my a**. He was EXPECTED to have a good team. He got lucky Texas was like a Boxing Champ in the last round and Tech came in fresh, (and still almost got beat)! Then, proceed to Norman, OK and get beat 65-21, (not to mention the last TD from Tech was a mercy TD given by the Sooners). What a complete disgrace. I mean, c'mon, what a disgrace. Then, proceed to almost lose to the BAYLOR BEARS in your own backyard! I mean, what the heck??? If Auburn gets this moron, good luck! Can you say it with me: OVER-RATED.

@1: Is there a player on the Texas Tech roster, other than maybe Crabtree, who was heavily recruited by Texas? How many draft picks does Texas Tech have in the last 5 or 6 years compared to Texas? The guy just went 11-1 at Texas Tech in the best conference in the nation. I think the number of coaches who could do that can be counted on one hand (and Mack Brown is definitely not one of them).

As an AU fan, I am not sure we need him here, he has a potent offense, but no defense, no running game either. You cant win in the SEC without all 3. I hate that TUB'S has left the building!!!!!!

Uh, any AU fan that does not want Coach Leach at AU is crazy... And any fan of other SEC teams(ie BAMA) that says he sucks is afraid of what he could do in the SEC. This guy is the real deal and is a proven SEC coordinator. He is the best coach out there not named Carroll, Saban, or Meyer. AU has been a slowly sinking ship since being blown out at home by Arkansas in 2006, Tuberville needed to go regardless if he was forced out or not. Do I have to recap how bad AU sucked this year? I am praying that Leach accepts the challenge and comes to AU. If not him then we need to look at Paul Johnson or RichRod if they would leave. If they won't come, we would have to look at an unproven coordinator or non-bcs coach, and that is a crapshoot.

I hope the BHam News is wrong about Leach. They did report that RichRod was coming to Bama a few years ago so who knows. Nutt would be an OK hire, I would not be upset with him although a lot of AU folks would. Nutt is very passionant about the game and deserves a shot at a bigger name school. Second coach in a row AU would have plucked from Ole Miss. However, I think it would take Nutt longer to turn AU around than Leach, and AU fans won't have much patience.

Nutt is just that, a NUT!!!! Not needed in Auburn in my opinion, as you said, howarjo1943, he would be an OK hire, we need more than OK. I agree that Leach is an outstanding coach, I just think he will have to concentrate more on defense than he does now in order to be successful in the SEC

@ 3: and the number of coaches who have a #2 ranked team in the NATION and lose 65-21 is how many? Again, Leach is OVER-RATED. SEC defenses would dominate Leach, plain and simple.

@13: So the guy has one bad game and that's it? Every coach in the country has been a part of an ugly or bad loss. Hell, Texas itself has given up a couple of 60 spots to Oklahoma over the past few years. It happens. It's part of football. If you don't get that, you don't understand football.

Double B...all Tech can get are cast offs and UT rejects..which is why Tech is usually a 7 or 8 wins a season team. While I have lived in Lubbock since 1969..I realize there isnt a whole lot to do out here..we are on the flattest piece of land on earth..not many trees...prone to dust storms and tornadoes..But well over 200,000 people call this city and county home..so there seems to be something here people like...the population keeps going up..perhaps its because people here are friendly...courteous....helpful..and...unlike the folks down Austin way...we arent rude..arrogant....or snobby. Why do you think A&M has been forced to the ranks of mediocrity or lower? That suction coming out Mack's office is hurting A&M too..perish the thought...ha ha. Eric Morris (the elf) no one recruited him...Danny Amendola? Too small..too slow..Leach found a spot for him....Wes Welker...same thing too slow..too small..but Leach and New England found a way to use him..and as a weapon..not just a roster filler. Zack Thomas? Wasnt a Leach product..but same deal..too small..too short....too slow.. and a pro bowl performer in the NFL. Now lets dicuss the last great thing to come out of UT...Vince Young..oh yeah..thats right..suicide watch and a councelor. Seems to me that when everything has been handed to you all your life you cant compete at the NFL level...but when you have been forced to fight for everything you get..you seem to be able to make it in the NFL...go figure...actually having to earn your way...what a novel idea.

I earlier posted a comment that letting Tuverville leave was a mistake for Auburn. It is sad that this is looking even more true in such a short period of time. While there was an unquestioned need for some change or rethinking in coaching, whatever happened behind the scenes that led to this bodes ill for the next HC. And it is a shame. For all the inter-school animosity and egos involved, Tuberville is - when all is said and done - a good man and coach, and he deserved more from Auburn.

Tuberville was a great coach no doubt. Definitely one of the best coaches, if not the best, AU has ever had. AU needed a change though. Last season was just too horrible and embarrassing for the current regime to continue. Trust me, I bleed orange and blue, but last year was unacceptable, especially considering the slide over the previous 2 years. I am confident AU will make the right hire, it is a very desirable job so a good coach will be coming to the Plains. Regardless of what the mullets in Tuscaloosa say, AU will land on its feet. AU is a top 15 program all time in winning percentage and has plenty of tradition.

I just read that a reliable source has Boise St coach Petersen to Miss State which doesn't surprise me since Boise will get left out of the BCS. A good hire for the Dawgs if this is true. I don't think he was AU material though. He has basically continued the winning tradition at Boise that was started by coaches such as Dirk Koetter and Dan Hawkins. He has gone undefeated in the WAC, but the WAC is a joke. The Mountain West is much stronger and even the MAC is better. His big claim to fame is beating one of the worst OU teams under Stoops during a down year in the Big 12 with trick plays. He may turn out to be great, but I think AU can do better.

Double B..but its ok when UT gives up 60 to OU....they simply ignore it and move on...but if anyone else does it...they are trash. How many times exactly has Macky-poo given up 60 points since he sucked into Austin? I can think of one time for sure....Leach has fell victim to 60 points...once..imagine that. Yeah..I am a Lubbockite....but I can see why Leach got big 12 coach of the year..considering the bulk of the talent in the great state of Texas runs to UT or OU..he did more with less than Stoops or Macky poo. Shifting gears a tad..all you big 12 haters who claim the bg 12 has no defenses...food for thought here. What IF the defenses are above average in the big 12 and the offenses are just THAT prolific? I am curious to find out .could go either way...but we wont know til january

Would somebody PLEASE shut Lee Corso up? On and on again today on ESPN about how there aren't enough black coaches in college football. Here's a thought, Lee...we'll address the "more black coaches" situation right after we start giving more scholarships to white players.
Give it a rest, I'm beggin' ya.
