West Virginia 35, Louisville 21. For some reason, Andre Ware was insistent for most of West Virginia's win over Louisville that Pat White can be a viable NFL quarterback, at one point even claiming that "20 out of 30 starting quarterbacks in the pros couldn't make that throw" when White hit a wide open man five yards behind the coverage on an underthrown ball in the second quarter. I have very little patience with this obsession, and not only because White isn't even on the radar as a pro quarterback.

Of all people, Andre Ware should be able to appreciate the virtue of a prolific college career that stands on its own, and if there is any player who deserves to be remembered as one of the great college quarterbacks of his era despite the inevitable loss in translation to the next level, it's Pat White. It was all there today -- 320 total yards, touchdown runs of 66, 43 and 7 yards, a couple of touchdown throws for good measure, one of the best days of many spectacular days for the White scrapbook -- and time and again, the broadcast kept coming back to what the scrambler's going to do in the NFL, and especially whether he can make it under center.

White has a great chance to be a solid receiver/return man, a la Hines Ward or Antwaan Randle El, though I really suspect he'll always remain obscure to the big league marketing juggernaut, just another "system quarterback" who didn't have the arm. Which he doesn't. But Pat White is still a more fearsome college quarterback than the NFL starters who can hit the open man behind the secondary in stride, and for West Virginians and fans of electric offensive football in general, he'll always be remembered more fondly. West Virginia has three games left: Appreciate his four-year reign of terror for what it is, while you still can.
