Charlie Weis doesn't want to talk about it. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick doesn't want to talk about it. Even the most Irish-centric newspapers, having already called for Weis' dismissal, don't have anything left to say except to sympathize with the seniors and open the bidding on the future. Weis was already so fired before Saturday's coffin-slamming loss at the hands of UConn, there's nothing left but waiting for the other shoe to fall after next week's season finale at Stanford.

The eerie calm reminds me of waiting for a devastating hurricane to come ashore after all the preparations have been made: The windows are boarded up, the pantry is full of supplies, the skies have taken on a greenish-gray hue, the wind is blowing mockingly and everyone is sitting on the porch, laughing nervously until the lights go out and everything begins to rock and howl in the throes of the storm. Weis had the same kind of chuckle amid the grim atmosphere at his regular Sunday press conference, where he insisted he planned to spend what will surely be his final week as Notre Dame's coach focusing on Stanford, trying to enjoy Thanksgiving with his family and refusing to consider resignation. Sometime after that, next Sunday or Monday, he'll be handed his walking papers and the epic storm of the '09 Notre Dame coaching search will land with full force.

I've joked before about having a "Charlie Weis is Fired" post in the can like the New York Times' pre-meditated obituaries of famous people, ready to toss up at a moment's notice when the time comes. The coming week, though, is going to amount to essentially the same thing, to the extent that all that will be left to say when the official word comes is "There it is." Stay tuned, kids, and make sure the pets are inside.

The grief from the players rings pretty hollow, to be honest. What a disappointment this team is.

As an ND hater, I really don't care what they do as long as it fails. With that off my chest, I find it interesting how the college football landscape has changed over the past 20 or so years. In those days, there was a relatively small group of elite programs. ND was one, along with Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Alabama and a few others. To be recruited by one of these schools, as either a player or a coach was the honor of a lifetime. But now, the national TV eye is on a wide variety of schools, and entire conferences. There is a lot of talk about the NBC / ND TV deal, but in reality ND gets not much more publicity than most other large programs. So, with that said there is a MUCH larger pool of desirable programs than there used to be, but still about the same pool of talent to draw from. Throw in the incidentals like: who wants to live in South Bend, and the ND job, as coach or player, doesn't shine like it used to. Why go to ND when you can be in Southern California, or somewhere in Florida? The days of ND being a highly prestigious program are over without some serious soul searching by the powers that be. Humbleness has never been an ND trait, one of the reasons many people hate them. But if that trait isn't learned, and learned soon, ND will continue to make all of us haters very happy.

Point taken, RJ... But what sets ND apart is that they aren't in a conference, and they get to keep ALL the TV revenue, instead of having to share equally with all the other teams in a conference, like many conferences require (the SEC, for instance). I'll bet you won't see a TV network work this kind of deal ever again. They have to publicize ND to the max, just hoping they can break even, because ND sure hasn't delivered on NBC's gamble (unless you consider that many folks tune in nowadays just to see them get BEAT...).

look i dont see why everyone wants his head so much. he is a great coach and yes they probably should be 10-1 right now. think abou tit if we had floyd against usc we probably would have won. so we had a few bad breaks this season but i think weis is the right man for the job, and i also think that if wies is gone so is the greatest college qb clusen and tate and any others that migh thave a chance will follow him. a coachign change is not the answer to the problems.

ND and Michigan are not the only big boys on the block anymore. The other teams have moved up in the past few years and I'm glad to see it. Spread it around. Some of these other campuses need to have a little fun too.

I don't think the issue is what team is competitive, or which teams can attract the top talent, etc. Those things are always changing, are fluid and can turnover without warning. Any team can compete. What worries me, as a fan, is the way the media distorts things, constantly promoting programs and conferences over others. Assuming top teams draw ratings, the media (mostly ESPN, ABC) do their best to ensure programs like the usual suspects (Texas, Florida, USC, Alabama) get massive pub. That tends to drown out upcoming programs, like Boise, etc. But the final nail in the box when that fails is promoting conferences. This ensures that those teams have a bullet-proof path to the championship because 'all of the teams they play are great'. This magnifies whatever wins they get, and this multipiler effect wastes the Boise States who suffer through a weak schedule. I think that is wrong. Each team should be judged by its own schedule, without the CME (Conference Mulitiplier Effect). Just let em play. ND and UM will be back, and competing again soon. And, soon enough, the SEC is going to slump to Big Ten status.

there are no storms at notre dame, the have been no storms at notre dame and there will be no storms at notre dame, despite media reports to the contrary written by people who have zero knowledge of these matters and zero say in what happens at notre dame.
charlie and his staff are staying for next year and for the forseeable future.
the current corrupt officiating, rules enforcement, and rankings systems that have made college football the con operation that it currently is will not be back next season or ever.
the entire world will see the real records of notre dame and of every other team next season and in all future seasons, instead of the phony paper records orchestrated by crooked conference officiating crews attempting to maximize the bowl revenues of the conferences that employ them and their bonuses which come out of those bowl revenues.
the sec conference and its crroked officials will be taking in the larget revenues and paying the largest bonuses this season by converting 2 looses into wins for florida and alabama, thereby guaranteeing one team in the bcs title game, a second team in another big payout bcs bowl, and a whole slew of payouts from other big payoff bowl games.

Charlie does not run with the ball. Neither does he pass or kick the ball. The so called blue chip PLAYERS are supposed to do that. When you choose players and they underperform, it is time to stop letting that imbecile Tom Lemming pick them for you. If the next coach does this, ND will not improve.

The problem with ND is the same one Duke, Vandy and other schools with higher than average academic
standards for incoming students. It's hard to build a roster with quality depth (85 positions) to compete with other schools that make it easier to get top notch athletes in. ND also made a pact not to provide "incentives" (money, cars, you name it) to entice athletes. Right now, ND has some quality skill players but not enough depth to be a top 10 program.
I think ND will be better served to concentrate on baskeball where you need fewer athletes to compete. I'm a ND "hater" but acknowledge what a difficult school it is to get into.

Funny that DanielT speaks of corruption w/ officiating, rules enforcement and ranking systems when year after year the Irish, come bowl selection time, gets picked over MUCH more deserving schools! By the sounds of your post DanielT, you're too up tight, bro. Step away from the TV on Saturdays and your health will be back from that cold, dark place it lays dormant. ND: Touchdown!!! (Other guy)

Gave up watching ND get beat a long time ago, now I just wish they'd get the press coverage other teams of their ability get (Navy, for example). Notre Dame is just another mediocre midwestern football team. In response to those hilarious "jealousy" accusations, I'm a Michigan State fan. My mediocre football team stomps the dead corpse of Notre Dame's football "presitge" into their own turf almost every year. Give it up Notre Dame fans, and accept your team for what it is.

Poor fenlonja, a sorry ND fan now reduced to critiquing others grammer and Brian's #7 definitiion of "Hater" is crybaby laughable. Obviously another poor ND fan who can't come to grips with her team's reality.
As an ND Hater, they are what they are, just another spectacle team like the service academies, only with the baggage of an arrogant fanbase and severely over-hyped team, led by Cheeseburger Charlie himself, the "Elmer Fudd" of college football. My worry is they'll actually get someone who can make them good enough to beat Big East teams.
They're a mediocre Conference-USA team at best, bottom-feeder Big East team at worst.

The Domers keep refering to corrupt officiating. Did anyone see the two TD's that were called back against U Conn. in the 4th quarter last Saturday because of phantom holding calls? The NBC announcers had to swallow hard and admit that the first call was bogus and did not comment on the second call because they sensed that the fix was on. Get over it Domers, you are done. Collect your NBC money while you can because that well is drying up. Maybe you can petition yhe Ivy League to let you in yheir conference.

hey all you dome-haters/nd-haters/christian-haters/whatever you call yourselves. appearently, charlie weis is not the best coach for wins and losses; but you cannot argue that he was a success where it mattered most: in the classroom -- 96% graduation rate (best in the nation.) many of you "haters" likely barely escaped high school graduation. HAHAHAHA. most of your schools do not come close to ANY academic standards AT ALL losers! LOL. sorry coach weis, we wish you well.

Charlie Weis may be a good pro coach..... but the same can't be said for college. The defense plays like a sandlot team, and the offensive line leaves much to be desired. I've been a fan since the days of Terry Brennan, and the last 15 years have been a nightmare. Clearly every team that plays against the Irish wants to knock their block off more than they do any other team, especially on the hallowed ground that is Notre Dame Stadium. The same can't be said about the Irish. They have lost their fight....and it's up to the coach to instill it. Bob, Ty, and Charlie have failed . A good coach can take mediocre talent and make it a force to be reckoned with. Case in point, Kirk Ferentz. (you, who talk about South Bend being in the middle of no-where, do you think Iowa City is fantacy land ???) I'm glad Charlie is going....and he will go, but Notre Dame will be back, the wheel will turn, and the neanderthals will howl even louder.
