Daily headlines, notes and errata in anticipation of the Game of the Decade of the Year.

You want a story? Buckeye Commentary's got your story right here:

Malcolm Jenkins may not think Ohio State is an underdog, but clearly, yes, the Buckeyes are officially massive underdogs. The L.A. Daily News' Scott Wolf said he'd seen a line drop to nine, but like his commenters, I haven't come across one that low yet; most have OSU +10.5, and there's at least one that puts the spread as high as 11.0 in the Trojans' favor. Today the Buckeyes are rebuilding their psyche, relying on a true freshman with accuracy problems to bal out a two-year, fifth-year senior at quarterback, and "desperate" to prove their manhood. And the last one is from the only national guy who seems to think the game will live up to the hype, Matt Hayes (note to self: Matt Hayes thinks the game will close? Maybe I should answer that e-vite for Saturday night, after all).

I would have guessed the line would be more like three or four, so this is so baffling to me, I didn't really even consider that the headline, "USC has little to worry about 'O-S-Who'" in the Orange County Register's Trojan blog might be be anything other than sarcastic, until I read it and, yeah, it's completely non-ironic:

If the Ohio without the “State” can come within a quarter of beating The Ohio State University, then we ought to turn down the hype several notches.

About the only danger for USC at this point is overconfidence.

Um, yeah. Might want to, ahem, guard against that.

Tale of the Tape of the Day. . . .

It is not that Jim Tressel has anything against pretending to have a player arrested, or staging a star player's suicide, or beat a movie star in a swimming race, or leading recruits in a shirtless man yell or being caught wishing Mike Bellotti 'good luck to you' on national television, or engaging reporters in a life-threatening thirst-off or taking time off to hone his best Jay Leno impersonation. It's just that it hasn't occurred to him. Advantage: Southern Cal.

Plausible Scenario of the Day. Beanie Wells suits up and jogs around with an epic roll of tape around his foot but can't quite go on his bad toe. Deflated, Ohio State is stuffed in its early attempts to run the ball, can't keep the Trojan offense off the field and falls into an early hole. Desperate, the Buckeyes turn to Terrelle Pryor for a spark, leading to a terrible freshman gaffe that throws open the floodgates. The Trojans explode a la the 2005 Orange Bowl over apparent equal Oklahoma, taking advantage of their offensive balance to mount a couple sustained drives, hit a couple big plays, and turn a short field or two into a substantial halftime lead. Leaning on Todd Boeckman to throw them out of trouble in the second half, things get worse for OSU in a rewind of January's mythical championship game, and the score gets into laugher territory, like 45-14 kind of bad.

After Saturday I guessed at a 7 pt. line. While I think the 10+ pt. line is high, I just can't get myself to buy into your "rope a dope" explanation of OSU's performance this weekend. Even assuming Beanie is 100% this weekend, I just think USC is a superior club and should be able to win handily if they play to their abilities.
What makes this sport great though is that Saturday night they'll line up and actually play this game and surprises are always possible. That's why we watch after all.

Yeah, the undefeated national champion 2004 USC and 2002 Ohio State teams should've been ranked in the teens at best. Especially that Buckeye team, who did they ever beat?

Who did they ever beat? Miami?...
Better question would have been who did they lose to... answer no one...

Boise State, Auburn, and Utah have had undefeated seasons too.
Losing to nobody means nothing. In the end it is all about where you were ranked to start the season. Occasionally playing a tough schedule factors in too.

Oh yeah, USC is SO overrated every year. It takes a special kind of pathetic for a team to lose 8 games in the past 6 seasons, right?
And that ohio state - 11 losses in the same timespan. How bad are they??
Trivia question of the day: Which team(s) has had fewer losses over the past 6 seasons than USC? ohio state?
    1) USC - no team has fewer losses over the past 6 season than USC. They're barely averaging one loss per season and haven't lost more than 2 games in a season since 2001.
    2) ohio state - Boise State (10) and, of course, USC (8). That's it.
Whine all you want, Clint P, but the fact is that these are the two best BCS teams from a win-loss perspective over the past 6 seasons. No other team (Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, et al) is better.

Which is exactly why the preseason polls are an abomination that should be done away with.

I'm so sick and tired of from all these grand stand fans that talk about coll. football and dont even think before they speak. the only reason the ohio state was there last year because the rest of the mighty conferences could'nt beat(stanford emmm!!!) but in the lat 12yrs the ohio state r 2-2 in national championships.

Marc sanchez threw for all those yards against a very bad virginia team and compare that to todd boeckman but no mention that ohio state played three qbacks that day so side by side not really reflective

Ohio State has a very rich tradition but by judging what I've seen so far this year they ain't gotta chance to beat SC.
They haven't played anybody and haven't looked good doing it. Meanwhile, SC played uninspiringly against Virginia (who were probably overated) but still took care of business. They seemed to lose interest after the first quarter. SC wins running away 55-13. USC establishes an insurmountable lead in the polls and Ohio State drops out of the top 25. Geogia beats it's chest and complains all year about how hard of schedule they have and should be ranked # 1 but will, like SC the last couple of years, lose to somebody they overlooked. SC plays Oklahoma in national championship game and we all know what happened the last time that took place. End of story.

First BOTH these teams are sub-par. They hardly play anyone good to showcase any real talent. It is easy to Stay in the top 5 when you win every game against non-bcs contenders. Second- Ohio State did not beat Miami, The ref won it for them. (Face Facts and move on)
Third - neither of these teams are worth talking about untill they play some big guns. (Florida, Georga, LSU, FSU, Tenn, BC, VT)

Wisconsin # 11 and Arizona State # 15 -- these are the best teams that they play. (I use "best" loosly here) If these teams can not play a powerhouse school and win with true talent, they should be knocked out of the top ten. OSU should be ranked 11th and USC should be ranked 12th.
    I rest my case...

Okay Okay Okay let's please stop with the over-used "USC is over rated....blah blah blah...." truth is they get all the respect they deserve and no one likes it because they dont play their favorite "SEC is the best conference top to bottom...." Volunteers team. Look truth is SEC is best top to bottom, Pac 10 is clearly #2(all teams use all pro sets which causes for hi IQ football) and USC is definitely the best team in the Pac10 and right now the best team in the country and they will blow the doors off of whomever they play. Yes in a perfect world John Booty wouldve have lost the game to UCLA and SC wouldve play Florida and last year if possible the world wouldve have voted USC against LSU or maybe Georigia cause OSU is clearly a joke

SEC’s top tier teams are marginally better than the top tier teams (1-4) of the PAC 10. However, another way of saying that is that teams 1 thru 4 of SEC are marginally more deserving to hang with USC than the rest of the PAC 10. I said marginally. That means they're all on the margin when USC is in play.
As for self-serving exercise in fantasy commentary as to season’s match-ups a fellow poster left off the paramount and ultimate BSC game: USC vs. victim.
