Weis Watch: Irish press calls for blood

Charlie Weis has made his stance toward his impending doom as Notre Dame coach clear enough: He thinks he still has a chance to keep the gig with wins in the Irish's last two games, and he's tired of thinking about it, anyway. This is Notre Dame, you're on the hot seat every day, it comes with the territory, etc. The man has football games to win now, thanks for coming.

The major papers on the Irish beat, however, are tired of waiting to deliver their verdicts -- after openly speculating on Weis' potential replacement after Saturday's loss to Pitt (Bob Stoops has no idea what you're talking about, by the way), both the Chicago Tribune and the hometown South Bend Tribune almost simultaneously released that rare bird, the official, "Big-time Coach Should Be Fired Now" op-ed, within hours of one another last night and this morning. First up, Al Lesnar of the hometown rag says it's "time for Irish to make the change":

SOUTH BEND — Bag the bowl. Circle the wagons. Round up the usual suspects. There's no quick fix for the negativity surrounding the Notre Dame football program.

Charlie Weis' hand-over-heart promise to do better after last season won't cut it this time. Athletic director Jack Swarbrick doesn't need a GPS to get around the Joyce Center anymore, and he's learned how to navigate the world of college football.
[...]
Whatever the case, time for a purge.

OK, thank you, Al. And from the Windy City, columnist David Haugh says all the evidence is in," and Swarbrick knows it:

Nothing that happens in Weis' final two games possibly could alter any logical conclusion drawn by Swarbrick about the state of affairs in Year 5. In fairness to a once-proud football program and Weis, end the charade now, Notre Dame.

Through 60 games, Weis has proved to be nothing more than Bob Davie with better bling. Going 35-25 at Notre Dame wasn't good enough for Davie to return for a sixth season. Nor should it be for Weis.

Good luck to the both of you the next time you're on campus for a press conference, gentlemen, and remember to bring a jacket.

Typically, for all the heat they take across the country from the true believers, the local paper is one of the last on the pile when a coach is out the door and one of the clear harbingers of the angel of death, apart from the everyday chatter of disgruntled fans. Newspapers have to live with their calls for blood, and Swarbrick essentially cleared the way Sunday when he said Weis' $18 million buyout would factor in his decision, so they're not going out on a limb. It's more like the limb breaking.

Still, although I'm sure I'm being naive and too patient by ten (especially when claiming coaches are oh-so-totally-fired is one of the great temptations and guilty pleasures of this gig, when appropriate), but it's hard for me to imagine an automatic dismissal if the Irish beat UConn and Stanford the next two weeks. Firing Weis after a 2-0 finish would mean canning a coach with two BCS appearances on his resumé, two straight clear steps forward on the field the last years and a Jan. 1 bowl (at 8-4, the Irish would be a virtual lock for the Gator Bowl) on the horizon. As it currently stands, a win at Stanford would be the best of Weis' entire five-year tenure, which currently includes only one win (over No. 24 Penn State in 2006) over a team that finished the season in the AP's top 25. That's not what they usually mean by "going out on top."

Then again, maybe the fact that beating Stanford even conceivably represents "the top" is kind of the point. But Weis is going to get that shot.

5 years and one win over a team that finished in the top 25 should be all that needs to be said.

I think the problem is no one thinks the Irish are going to win both of those games, Doc.

Matt Hinton, although your name is familiar in the South Bend area, relatives maybe, I can hardly believe that you think Charlie is going to be around after the first of the year. Al Lesar at the South Bend Tribune and David Haugh formerley of the South Bend Tribune too do know the ins and outs of the University of Notre Dame, they will not need the jacket at the press conference unless maybe one to hang the badges of courage on. A UConn win and a Stanford win will not save the unloved Charlie, and that's if they win those games. A Gator bowl bid is like a date with your pretty cousin, nobody really knows your cousin but everyone thinks you got a great catch. Tyrone and Bob would have loved to be in this situation, oops, they were, but Charlie will end up on a NFL team by the seasons end or sooner...Oh but Claussen will go pro if Charlie dosen't come back? Ya right, Notre Dame don't play that homie, they'll have plenty of other Golden Child's coming around the block. So get on it, pick the best choice of a replacement now or those local rags will have you scooped again.

The game with UConn is a toss-up. The game with Stanford will be a bloodbath in favor of Stanford.
The only reason ND will get to a Jan 1 bowl is that more and more bowls are Jan 1 or after. Being on Jan 1 now means less than it did years ago. And they'll lose whatever bowl they make it to.
Weis is gone after this year.

They should try to poach a good D coordinator like one of the Pelini brothers. They've got NU's D to be mean! I haven't seen ND's defense be mean at all!

The problem is that Notre Dame requires players to be good students and of good character to go along with being a good athlete. Can't compete with USC, Ohio State or Florida when those schools focused on winning games first. Just the facts.

Um...You left out the word "not" there, and it's kind of an important distinction. Swarbrick said Weis' buyout would NOT factor in his decision. Sheesh.

Van - Stanford thinks that you are silly and will crush Notre Dame with glee.
And after Clausen's showboating during recruiting, the entire "good character" bit is a joke.

If Notre Dame loses to Stanford, they can't use academics as an excuse. They are getting top recruits, it is just poor coaching. Time for a change, and maybe this time they can get it right....

News flash Golden Domers, you are the definition of 8-5. Your team is irrelevant to the modern era of football (1950). Remember, Granny Holtz had to cheat to win that last mythical title. Please hire Brian Kelly so we can have this same discussion in four years or be happy where you are. Think, you could be Kansas.

So Nick Saban has returned Alabama to prominence in 2 years...heck, June Jones, in year 2, has SMU headed to a bowl and a shot at a conference title....Iowa St's new coach has them in a bowl game and they have been doormats.....
It's just funny that other programs can do quick turnarounds and Notre Dame has been doing it since 1994.

"Your team is irrelevant to the modern era of football (1950)."
4 NC's in that time period (1966, 73, 77, 88) is surely irrelevant, yes. As proven by the fact that you're commenting here...ND sure is irrelevant. Just like USC was irrelevant in the 1990's, Oklahoma was irrelevant in the 1990's, Texas was irrelevant in the 90's...all things go in cycle, just takes the right man to lead the way. Much as I wanted my fellow Domer Charlie to be that man, he is not.

I just want UConn to win a close game instead of losing one for a change this year, so ND doesn't swipe a Big East bowl bid.

Weis lost this team long ago. It is evident by the sloppy play and many penalties.
    Coaches to look at:
    Chris Petersen
    Mike Leach
    Gary Barnett
    Paul Johnson
Swarbrick needs to start the conversations with these guys' agents right now. Waiting until the season is over would be stupid.

Most fans were surprised when Willingham was fired, but most also knew his heart was no longer in the job.
With Weis, it is different because he has poured his heart and soul into the job.
But, it is still in fact time for him to go.
