No surprises from Athens, where Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are both bailing for bucks after two stellar yet not quite fully-cooked seasons at Georgia. They go down as one of the most lethal run-pass duos of the decade, and if only the Bulldogs had made Moreno the feature back before his explosion against Florida in 2007, or played a little defense this year, they might have captured at least a division title for the road.
With his size, Stafford has had "No. 1 pick" written all over him from the day he showed up in one of those high school passing camps and left vapor trails behind the ball. I'm not sure he completely fulfilled his potential as a college passer, especially while toiling in the very long shadow of Tim Tebow, but he was dramatically better in every phase of the game as a junior and has no reason to pass on universal projections that he'll be the first quarterback -- and maybe the first player -- off the board in April. He was more mobile this year, more accurate and didn't lose anything from the searing deep ball that got him where he is in the first place. He struggled against Alabama and Florida, yes, but still: Nobody throws a longer, tighter, prettier ball than Matt Stafford.
Taken with Moreno, a tightly-wound, high-flying ball of such perpetual energy that he frequently got up and kept running a few steps after he was tackled, Georgia loses not only two of the premiere skill players in the draft but 95.5 percent of their total yards in 2008, along with half the touchdowns. Florida was already going to be a favorite in 2009; now Georgia enters wholesale rebuilding mode offensively, pending a Knowshon-like breakout by hyped backup Caleb King. Unless athletic, third-year quarterback Logan Gray is a revelation, things could be dire.
UPDATE, 4:35 p.m. ET: Add to today's exodus Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, one of the very, very few elite big-play guys in the ACC and a kind of tragic figure at times on a Terp offense that struggled to get him the ball on a consistent basis. Heyward-Bey only had one 100-yard receiving game each of the last two seasons, in the upsets over Georgia Tech in 2007 and over Wake Forest this year, and was snubbed by the all-conference team, but his speed will get him some late first round buzz. With a quarterback, he could be a really frightening player.

To Airon... Moreno will probably be a change of pace back and yes, he will produce in the NFL, and Stafford will be fine too, if he goes to the Lions they better not try to start him right away and expect too much from a rookie, or ruin him as they did Barry Sanders.

Personally, I think that the #1 ranking during the preseason was the biggest detrement to the Dawgs this year. It put too much pressure on the boys and focused defenses on Stafford/Morneo's ability. While I will miss the pocket presence of Stafford and the explosiveness of Moreno, I believe that possibly teams will under estimate UGA allowing the "Silver Britches" emerge as a conference championship contender. I can't wait to see AJ Green in action next year.

To Airon - I'll bet a years worth of mortgage payments that Knowshon has a more productive NFL career then "Beanie".
