No surprises from Athens, where Matt Stafford and Knowshon Moreno are both bailing for bucks after two stellar yet not quite fully-cooked seasons at Georgia. They go down as one of the most lethal run-pass duos of the decade, and if only the Bulldogs had made Moreno the feature back before his explosion against Florida in 2007, or played a little defense this year, they might have captured at least a division title for the road.

With his size, Stafford has had "No. 1 pick" written all over him from the day he showed up in one of those high school passing camps and left vapor trails behind the ball. I'm not sure he completely fulfilled his potential as a college passer, especially while toiling in the very long shadow of Tim Tebow, but he was dramatically better in every phase of the game as a junior and has no reason to pass on universal projections that he'll be the first quarterback -- and maybe the first player -- off the board in April. He was more mobile this year, more accurate and didn't lose anything from the searing deep ball that got him where he is in the first place. He struggled against Alabama and Florida, yes, but still: Nobody throws a longer, tighter, prettier ball than Matt Stafford.

Taken with Moreno, a tightly-wound, high-flying ball of such perpetual energy that he frequently got up and kept running a few steps after he was tackled, Georgia loses not only two of the premiere skill players in the draft but 95.5 percent of their total yards in 2008, along with half the touchdowns. Florida was already going to be a favorite in 2009; now Georgia enters wholesale rebuilding mode offensively, pending a Knowshon-like breakout by hyped backup Caleb King. Unless athletic, third-year quarterback Logan Gray is a revelation, things could be dire.

UPDATE, 4:35 p.m. ET: Add to today's exodus Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, one of the very, very few elite big-play guys in the ACC and a kind of tragic figure at times on a Terp offense that struggled to get him the ball on a consistent basis. Heyward-Bey only had one 100-yard receiving game each of the last two seasons, in the upsets over Georgia Tech in 2007 and over Wake Forest this year, and was snubbed by the all-conference team, but his speed will get him some late first round buzz. With a quarterback, he could be a really frightening player.

He will be a pro, can only wait and see if he makes it with the Lions or Chiefs.

Hinton- If we go 10-3 NEXT year, you may then say it's "a fine season". 2008's campaign was an egregious waste of talent.

matt - you're drastically underplaying the talent of one joe cox - dude is a gamer. qb is the spot i'm not worried about next season. replacing that ball of energy wearing #24 will be the biggest concern on the offensive side of the ball in '09.....

Stafford, already plays like a NFL quarterback in college;he shows the grace and the maturity that it takes to be a star NFL quarterback.[The Cowboys, need to get rid of Romo, and try to snag Stafford..hear me Jerry Jones?]Moreno, would be a EXCELLENT ingredient, to mix in the Falcon's offense, alternating with Norwood - who BOTH can also catch passes out of the backfield. That dynamic duo, with Micheal Turner, would drive ANY defense crazy, not to mention the Ryan - White aerial arsenal.. Dirty birds are back! SWOOP!

Ive been a Dawg fan all my life. I say good riddens Stafford,Cox is going to be a diamond in the ruff and a big surprise to the SEC (Gators). King he will do great as long as he don't let it go to his head like Moreno, and the media keeps him out of their mouth. Just as soon as they put Moreno, on the map every team went for him and shut him down pretty good. Plus with Green, this year with haveing a little more experience in his belt who knows how far they can go.

Adios Senor Stafford, thanks for the memories. I liken this to Tennessee and Peyton Manning. They were great but could never win the NC with Manning at the helm. He leaves and the next year the Vols are NC's with Tee Martin. I'm not saying that UGA will win the NC but I think that the chemistry will be better and there won't be the appearance of apathy on the part of the UGA players. All this being said, I wish Stafford and Moreno much success in the next stage of their lives! Go Dawgs!

Georgia will be a much better team barring injuries. They have so many options at QB and running back and the returning OL will make the good QBs and RBs great. Also, The defense will return!

Unfortunately for us, Richt didn't know what to do with all that talent. It was good to see an apology from him this season. Maybe next year they can get the defense fired back up. I still love them and they had a good record, but blowout losses against Bama and UF deserve an apology from the whole team. A loss is one thing, but they were undisciplined and unprepared for those games. Hopefully the coaches will get a better grip of the team next year. They'll be fine, but I'll still miss the players leaving. Good Luck to the leaving class as well as the future of next year's team. I can't wait!

I attended my first Georgia game in 1956. I have witnessed the good years, the bad years and the ugly years. THIS WAS AN UGLY YEAR. I have seen great players leave early, transfer and flunk out. One that did not transfer is JOE COX. He will have a chance now to show just how good he is, and believe me, he is a lot better than good. No matter who is the running back or quarterback, the key will be the defense. If it does not improve, it would not matter even if we had 2 Staffords and 2 Morenos, it will be another ugly year. We MUST improve on in the secondary, defensive end and linebacker position (except for Curren). The defensive interior linemen can play for anyone. No worry there. I can't wait either.

Joe Cox will be FINE, maybe he can light a fire under the team's ass so they don`t come out flat (i.e. bama, fla games.) with a much improved O-line, hopefully the running game will pan out there is enough talent at RB thaat at least someone should break out. The receiver corps should be fine and even up graded if we can land Marlon Brown, the kid is a stud and could possibly start as Green did this year. Special Teams need some work, as does the defense, not the talent level on defense but, mainly the attitude of smashing and flying 11 hats to the ball every down every time. hopefully the injury bug won`t hit as hard this year. 92 days til the spring game, Go Dawgs!!!
To Airon... Moreno will probably be a change of pace back and yes, he will produce in the NFL, and Stafford will be fine too, if he goes to the Lions they better not try to start him right away and expect too much from a rookie, or ruin him as they did Barry Sanders.

As a die hard Dawg fan, I have to say that with these two guys gone, it could be just what the doctor ordered in '09. This year had me more psych'd than I have been in years for 2 reasons: #7 and #24. What a let-down! I agree with some of the posts below. So much talent and potential, yet a 9-3 season, crappy!
Personally, I think that the #1 ranking during the preseason was the biggest detrement to the Dawgs this year. It put too much pressure on the boys and focused defenses on Stafford/Morneo's ability. While I will miss the pocket presence of Stafford and the explosiveness of Moreno, I believe that possibly teams will under estimate UGA allowing the "Silver Britches" emerge as a conference championship contender. I can't wait to see AJ Green in action next year.

I wish the two of them the best of luck on the next level, I'm sure (okay, hopeful) they will represent UGA well. As for next season, as others have pointed out, it won't be the O that holds us back.
To Airon - I'll bet a years worth of mortgage payments that Knowshon has a more productive NFL career then "Beanie".

Wanted to see Joe Cox start from the "get go". I was pleased to see Matt develop over the years but what an immature move on his and Knowshon's part. Get your education and enjoy this thing we call college football to the hilt. I agree with DAWGS OF WAR; we might be looking at the Tee Martin of UGA. Joe, thanks for sticking it out and making us and your parents proud. Go DAWGS Sic' em.........

he needs to pull an Eli, and force a trade because he'll be going to Detroit, which will suck for him. Hope Dallas trades for him because Mr. Hollywood English Riding Cap Tony Romo is done, he's soft and he's weak. Romo should have paid attention to Tim Tebows press conference after their loss to Ole Miss, Romo's press conference after their humiliation to the Eagles was one of the worst I have seen, where's the fire?

Joe cox Sucks. He might start at first, but A QB that actually has an arm will replace him. And Beanie Wells will look like Travis Henry in cement. The guy has no explosion at all. I know he has been hurt alot but he doesn't impress me much. moreno is going to be awesome. He is like Bush with power and a mean streak. Stafford will be ok if he doesn't end up in detroit. he needs an offensive line because he isn't elusive at all. Detroit needs a strong armed QB that moves around well. Some surprise players in the draft are WR Hakeem Nicks, QB Josh Freeman, RB Donald Brown,RB Javon Ringer,DT Peria Jerry. I think Detroit should draft a non position player in the first round or maybe WR Crabtree with the 1st and QB Freeman in the 2nd, and for fun Ringer in the 3rd. Doesn't detroit have two 1st round picks this year?

I have little hope for 09 since Bobo does not understand the importance of the rushing game. He underutilized Lumpkin/Brown/Ware and then Moreno. TB's should have been our bread & butter. Bobo consistently asked more of Stafford than he was ready for and cost Moreno a Heisman shot. Break down the drives (i have) and compare how many were successful for first downs that were primarily run vs the ones we started 2nd and 10 because of a low percentage shot down the field. Cox/King - it does not matter. Bobo is a QB and does not respect a 4-5 yd run or a solid 8-10 yd pass to a TE. He is all about the glamor pass, as I suspect most of my fellow Dawg fans are as well. I do not blame the D. An O that can not sustain possession and repeatedly asks the D to bail it out is a failed system. Richt has failed because he doesn't understand as well.

I understand why Moreno is leaving. He really doesn't have anything else to prove. He could go up a couple of rungs in the UGA record books. He could help us underachieve to another 10-win season. If he can stay healthy and put on 5-15 pounds of muscle without losing any speed or quickness. He'll do at least as great as the rookie running back crop this year. Matthew Stafford needs to stay in school. Historically speaking quarterbacks that leave with eligibility left on the table don't do that well. Staying until your senior doesn't mean you'll be great, but there's a bust list a mile long on quarterbacks who left early (Leaf, Shuler) just to name a few. I wish them both the best of luck. I enjoyed watching them for the last three seasons. Go Dawgs. BOY IT WOULD SURE BE NICE, TO BEAT FLORIDA, TENNESSE, AUBURN AND GEORGIA TECH IN THE SAME SEASON.
