Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

So earlier today Pete Carroll put up a Twitter poll:

... and inadvertently hit one of my few exposed proletarian nerves.

Said poll can be found here, nominating nine numbers representing 11 Southern Cal players (a couple numbers are shared by starters on opposite sides of the ball), each of whom Carroll lists by name. At the moment, with a little over 1,500 votes, No. 2 -- to be worn by safety Taylor Mays and running back C.J. Gable -- is leading the pack.

I gather that this is a bit of non-binding fun on Carroll's part. But clearly (and even one of the poll's commenters points this out) using an athlete's likeness to produce and sell anything is strictly verbotten. (From the NCAA manual, Section 12.5: "The student-athlete’s name, picture or appearance [may not be] used to promote the commercial ventures of any nonprofit agency." ... "Any commercial items with names, likenesses or pictures of multiple student-athletes ... may be sold only at the member institution at which the student-athletes are enrolled.") This is why Sam Keller can plausibly sue EA Sports. Collegiate jersey sales are based on the notion that the number somehow doesn't represent the name or likeness of any specific athlete; you shouldn't be able to find one with a name on the back. (In USC's case, there are no names on the actual jerseys the players wear in games, although, just as with online rosters in EA Sports' franchise, it's easy enough to add it yourself if you really want to.) So even though the replicas may cost $150, no athlete receives any of the proceeds. Because there is no specific player, right? Go team!

As Carroll proves, even the coaches don't bother to keep up this fiction. If USC markets the No. 2 jersey this fall, everybody knows exactly what -- and who -- they're buying: Taylor Mays and/or C.J. Gable. No. 4 is Joe McKnight. Elsewhere, No. 15 is Tim Tebow, No. 12 is Colt McCoy. They're openly marketed this way online and in stores, and now, for some reason, by one of the most high profile coaches in the country. There are no secrets, nothing to hide, until it's time to divvy up the profits.

The only way to eliminate this is for each school to pick 5 or so numbers and market the same numbers, every year and not allow the players to wear these numbers. The numbers can represent an iconic "number" from a particular institution...
However, it is stupid..who cares. The reason for the numbers and uniform changes instituted by universities is to create a new product for fans to buy.. it generates revenue. As far as letting players make money...THEY DO! Most of us walk away from college with a huge debt resulting from student loans. All the while working remedial jobs to pay for cheap rent, fast food and Natural Ice kegs.
The revenue produced from jersey sales, ticket sales and whatever else is reinvested back into the universities.. its not like there are guys sitting on a board of directors cashing dividend checks like stock companies. Few college sports generate revenue in the black and football is one of them. That money is passed on to pay for other athletes in sports not so popular with fan bases.
Professional athletes treat their sports as a profession.. they hold out for more money and are constantly renegotiating contracts. It is a job. How many of the rest of us would love to get a free education, free living expenses and ON-THE-JOB training from the industries top "instuctors" or coaches for up to 4 years. Imagine being put through business school for free and then sitting down with Warren Buffett for a few hours every night to talk about emerging markets.

USC isn't using players names, picture or likeness to sell jerseys. Normally they don't ask, they just produce the numbers they think will most likely sell. They don't sell jerseys with names on them and the player don't have names on their jerseys. It's the same thing every other schools does every single year, they are selling team jerseys and nothing more. The only difference is Carroll is asking what numbers the fans would like to see on the bookstore shelves.

... leave it to Yahoo Sports to dig up another USC story ... did you "writers" go to fucla or something ... why don't you "write" something about Miami , or Florida State - don't they have loads of braided & weaved student/felons playing ball there ? ... better yet - drum up some good 'ol boy diction about your precious S.E.CSHE - maybe you can get a jump start on their first power-house apponent South-West Arkansas Tech of the Eastern Valley ... USC doesn't even list player names on their jerseys to begin with , because it's about team , and not blowing the BCS Computer techs for better rankings ... PLAY US , or shut the FAK up ...!!!

Did the author read his own remark 'No. 2 -- to be worn by safety Taylor Mays and running back C.J. Gable' - what is the problem?
I could care less if this were Notre Dame (also does not place the names of the players on the back of their jerseys' so what? There is no name where is the problem unless the school doesn't have a program worth a darn or if it does can't sell their 'authentic' jersey 'with' a nem - choices made

Why on Earth do people want to buy particular players' jerseys anyway? Does it make them feel cooler or more athletic? Go spend your 150 bucks on something worthwhile like groceries.

In general, Yahoo has done a good job reporting on possible abuses by USC athletics, and I say this as an SC alum. This story, on the other hand, is stupid, and just appeals to those who think that Yahoo has a vendetta against SC sports. SC is doing nothing that other schools don't also do. I also see that Yahoo is actually selling USC jerseys on the website. If Yahoo is against selling NCAA jerseys, stop selling them on your own website. This is a dumb story about nothing.

It's not that they use the numbers...you can't (especially USC who is already under investigation) name the players. This is why Sam Keller is suing EA sports...whether or not he wins, the point is he has a case, and in the College football you don't want anyone to "establish a case" against ya.

I am a Clemson fan and each year the Clemson jersey has a different number on it based on the best player that year. Ask fans and they do not want a generic number, they want the good player's number. How is any school not guilty of making money off of a player? As a Clemson fan (not a USC fan at all) I will say this article is a prime example of haters. They are good and you cannot stand it. Pete is cocky and you hate him. That is fine but don’t waste my time crying about it. Grow a pair and realize that they are good and you are not.

USC springboards these kids into national prominence and gives them a chance to be noticed by the professional scouts. That is their payment...it just takes a couple years to pay off. The coach gives his players a chance to make the insane amount of millions of dollars in the near future and not many of those players give back to the universities once they move on. The school invests a lot of money and time in these kids to make them better football players. Without proper coaching and training these kids would not be able to make that money in the NFL later. You should be fired for your bias and outright hate speech against another team. This is not journalism...it is a temper tantrum thrown by a weak writer that hates a team.

Reggie Bush brought a lot of money to USC and without USC, he would not have been drafted that high. If he went to Syracuse for instance he would still be a good player but no one would really care because he is not on a good team. He is not on TV (nationally) each week. He would not have the mega million dollar contracts and endorsements that came after college and before the NFL. What about 5 years after Reggie leaves USC but he is still making money at signing events where he is signing USC jerseys, Helmets, and 8X10 pictures? Does the school get any kickbacks from that? The kids get back what they put in.

I think it is a good idea what Pete Carroll is doing, it gives the chance for fan favorites to be rewarded. It prevents some executive at Nike from making decisions that are in their best interest, not the school. I have a feeling if Urban did this in Florida you would not be talking all this trash, you would be saying how brilliant he is. Stop the USC hating, it really gets old especially when you do not hate USC and you do not like them either. 98% of us don't care!
