This comes as no surprise, but it is official -- as of this afternoon, the man who last fall completed 11 of 27 passes in a loss to Wyoming, largely inspired the best tortured fan video of 2008 and served as the hallucinatory subject of an imaginary conversation with a weary author suffering from something like post-traumatic stress disorder is back on top, baby:

Quarterback Jonathan Crompton has been named starter, Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin said after Monday's practice.

The real significance of this confirmation, on the heels of Auburn's decision to start Chris Todd, is that both quarterbacks from the most horrific offensive game of last fall have fully recovered their positions from half a season on the bench and will line up across from each other again on Oct. 3, an improbable and no doubt riveting reprise.

And there's a good chance the Vols will go into that game without their best receiver. If last year's UT-Auburn game was like watching baby seals getting clubbed on the beach, this one will be like watching senior seals getting clubbed on the beach -- they're less cute, but more tragic in their way.

Well VolNation, I predicted the Vols would have a "boring" 5-7 year. After the announcement of today, the season will be"hilarious " and maybe 4-8. Jonathan, please prove me wrong.
Will Kiffon listen to someone or the VolNation when they cheer for a change.
A trailer was left Coach Bill Battle when he did not listen.

I know it's on the list, but when we talk about the "most horrific offensive game of last fall" I don't thnk Auburn-Tennessee is even close to the top. Auburn and Tennessee both show up often on the list of nominees, though. Here's the list of games from 2008 where the winner scored 14 or fewer points:
    12/31/2008 Oregon St 3 vs Pittsburgh 0
    9/13/2008 Auburn 3 at Mississippi St 2
    9/27/2008 Western Michigan 7 at Temple 3
    10/25/2008 Duke 10 at Vanderbilt 7
9/20/2008 Wake Forest 12 at Florida St 3
    10/9/2008 Clemson 7 at Wake Forest 12
    9/6/2008 Connecticut 12 at Temple 9
    10/18/2008 Connecticut 10 at Rutgers 12
    11/22/2008 Clemson 13 at Virginia 3
10/25/2008 Penn State 13 at Ohio State 6
    10/11/2008 TCU 13 at Colorado St 7
    11/8/2008 Wyoming 13 at Tennessee 7
12/6/2008 South Florida 7 at West Virginia 13
    10/4/2008 Northern Illinois 9 at Tennessee 13
    9/13/2008 Wisconsin 13 at Fresno St 10
    10/11/2008 Rutgers 10 at Cincinnati 13
    10/11/2008 Toledo 13 at Michigan 10
    11/1/2008 Utah 13 at New Mexico 10
    11/2/2008 East Carolina 13 at UCF 10
    11/6/2008 TCU 10 at Utah 13
    11/22/2008 Duke 3 at Virginia Tech 14
    9/13/2008 Georgia 14 at South Carolina 7
    10/25/2008 Louisiana Tech 7 at Army 14
    10/21/2008 Ohio 10 at Temple 14
    9/27/2008 Tennessee 12 at Auburn 14
9/30/2008 Florida Atlantic 13 at Middle Tenn St 14
    10/4/2008 Auburn 13 at Vanderbilt 14
    10/18/2008 Kansas St 13 at Colorado 14
    11/1/2008 Kentucky 14 at Mississippi St 13
Amongst the nightmares, I'd say Vols @ Tigers was just middlin' mediocre. For "root canal" painful, I like Wake Forest at FSU. Or any game involving Temple.

Ive came in to say Auburn-Miss St. One that isnt on the last because the defense scored way too much is Kentucky v Louisville. Kentucky won 27-2 with 2 TDs off fumble returns for TD and another TD drive that was 1 play, 7 yards. The offenses scored 6 pts, with the Ds scoring 23. That is twice as good as Auburn-MSU, but it should be in consideration.

Kentucky-Louisville had 415 total yards of offense. Both Auburn-MSU and Auburn-UT had more yards of offense. I looked thru a few others on the list in #3 and I cant find one with less yards of total offense. Anyone?

It's hard to argue with 3-2. In that game there was a total of 20 first downs. Bad as UK-LU was, those two teams combined for 29 first downs.
I'm a big fan of pitching and defense. 3-2 is almost a perfect, err, baseball score.

Sorry, Matt -- at least someone scored an offensive touchdown in that game. Auburn-Miss State was so bad that you just had to watch. I can't even remember what game was on ABC against it that weekend now.

From a point-spread perspective, just by kicking off this game was one of the worst of the season. Auburn was 2-9 against the spread, and Tennessee was an abominable 1-11 over-under -- it's only over was the season opener against UCLA, which needed OT to get the over. Those that took Auburn and the over should be identified, exposed for public ridicule and banned from ever placing a wager on sports.

Well hopefully he's finally mastered that whole "center-quarterback exchange" thing that's been giving him so much trouble.

Ok, Auburn-Tennessee was the worst game I personally watched, and that includes most of the Sun Bowl. Crompton and Todd really left me disgusted.
