Virginia Tech 20, Cincinnati 7. The Orange Bowl was not lame or depressing, but watching Virginia Tech win is always like watching some grizzled old world craftsman, like a cooper or something, tying together a barrel by hand. You stare at him for a few hours without a thought in your head, nobody says anything while he works, and at the end of the day, there's your barrel. It's never occurred to him there might be better or more efficient ways to make a barrel. Why would anyone want to futz with the operation or make it more complicated? It's a perfectly good barrel, and you'll take it home to use and never think of where it came from again.

Tonight, the Hokies pounded out a strong but not quite dominant running game, picked off Tony Pike four times, completely dominated time of possession, made good on a couple turnovers and a pair of red zone stops, and at the end of the night, there' s your barrel. What do you say about that? There was never any doubt about what the final product would look like. It's sturdy and practical, and it never crossed your mind that it could have been made into anything else or filled any other role. The Hokies are what they are, and it doesn't have to impress anyone. It just has to work.

What Tech is now is a 10-game winner for the fourth year in a row, and finally a winner in a big-money game behind the familiar defensive heroics and the thunderous, consistent running of Darren Evans. With Georgia Tech, Boston College and North Carolina all losing, they also secured the title of "Best Team in the ACC" in the final polls for the fifth time in five years since joining the conference. They won five of six since the end of October, another November miracle. Yes, other than the occasional scamper by Tyrod Taylor, it puts you to sleep. But your entertainment is not required.

A barrel? Couldn't you have used a different workmanlike metaphor like a ... lunchbox? But that would be too cliche.
Anyways, it'll be really interesting to see what happens next year. Tech will lose Victor Harris and Orion Martin from the defense, but no big offensive players will be leaving. And if Stinespring remembers how well the first-half passing attack (coupled with Evans' and Taylor's running) worked, Tech may actually be stronger on offense than defense. The last time that happened was 1999.

Being a UC fan I am disappointed but not surprised with what happened last night. UC's average defense could not stop Evans or Taylor last night and UC did an awful job protecting Tony Pike. The Big East has one more team playing {UCONN} but will most likely finish as the worst BCS conference for this season. It was a great season nevertheless for UC fans and hopefully the team can have another great year in 2009.
Way-To-Early-Predictions for Virgina Tech for 2009-10- Should be in the ACC favorite with Taylor and Evans leading the offense. Though UNC with Tate and Nicks coming back will be a lethal combo as well.
Way-To-Early-Predictions for UC for 2009-10- Tony Pike and Gillyard will lead what should be a very solid UC offense, but losing all but 2 starters on an average at best defense hurts. Should be favored along with Pittsburgh, USF and UCONN{If Donald Brown returns} to win the Big East.

Actually, Virginia Tech has won at least 10 games in each of the last 5 seasons. USC and Texas are the only other I-A schools that have done that. (I refuse to acknowledge the acronym "FBS").

Tate and Nicks will not be a combo for UNC next year. Tate was a senior, and didn't get hurt until after his potential for a medical redshirt was exhausted. Nicks most certainly will have an opportunity for NFL money.

It is what it is - it's Beamer Ball. It won't thrill you, but it works. With a Sophomore QB and 3 Freshman WR's, I think this was Frank's best coaching job ever. Yeah, they lose a few players on Defense next year, but it will still be solid and I think the Offense is going to be "lighting up" some teams. Beamer Ball = ACC domination.

This was absolutely the worst BCS game with tow teams that did not deserve to be there.

So Gary, you watched the game. Sorry it was so boring that you have an opinion on it. Where was your team? Obviously, not on T.V. that night. Tech might not be lighting up the offensive stats this year, but it is what it is. 4 Freshmen recievers, freshman RB, 2 Freshmen OLs, and freshmen middle LB, starting. Hell, most of the team just got there drivers permits, let alone be playing in the Orange Bowl. Cash that check Frank.
