Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

Let us count the amazing aspects of this fourth quarter collision Saturday night between LSU's all-purpose headhunter, Chad Jones, and Arkansas receiver Joe Adams, besides the sheer, frightening velocity:

1. Both lived. Adams actually got up almost immediately after shaking off the cobwebs; Jones was able to stagger off without too much drama.

2. Both returned to the field within a few plays -- it was Adams who hauled in the fourth down, go-ahead touchdown seconds later to put Arkansas up 30-27 and force the harried LSU drive that sent the game to overtime. This despite the fact that ...

3. Adams was diagnosed with a "minor stroke" that kept him out of a crucial three-game stretch in October but apparently has not made him or Razorback coaches squeamish about the durability of his brain in the meantime.

And maybe most surprisingly, given my previous stance on the issue,

4. I agree completely with the flag on Jones. Earlier in the year, I balked at the pervasiveness of "unnecessary roughness" calls against hits like this, but maybe because of the increasingly frightening news about concussions over the last few weeks, vicious hits at full-speed don't leave me thinking "He got jacked up!" anymore as much as they leave me thinking "He needs immediate medical attention and a careful consideration of his long-term future." I guess it's a good thing for Arkansas (and for the sake of a dramatic finish) that Joe Adams wasn't in that state of mind.

#1 I thought it was semi-funny that they were both wearing the number 3. Like some pre-ordained thing goin on.
#2 What /really/ bothered me about the whole thing was that on the touchdown catch, Chad Jones lead with his head AGAIN. Basically doing the exact same thing he did the first time, except that Adams wasn't as defenseless.
#3 Another thing that bothered me was the LSU fans reaction to the call. How can they boo that call? Are people down there honestly that retarded? I mean jesus, I get that you want to be loyal to your team, but that's too far. Maybe you douchebags should think about the safety of the players for once in your life. Dam.

Look at the replay, specifically the last shot from behind the offense. It is borderline on whether he lead with his shoulder or his head. Reasonable minds can disagree. Genius.

That was a bad call. Chad Jones hit him with his shoulder. BTW this is coming from a Razorback fan.

Yeah, Let's leave that foolish "Oh!, He got jacked up!" And then the proverbial, hypocritical, (After someone is still laying on the ground motionless for 5 minutes), "This puts it all in perspective..." BS. I'm not 100% sure regarding this particular head to head, but any clear body missle-helmet lauching throw the guy off the field.

#4) The penalty was warranted, but Chad Jones did the right thing. He doesn't play for Notre Dame so he can't just let the guy make the catch.

At 1:24 of the video you can clearly see him lead with the helmet.

that was a good call by the refs at the last second jones lowered his head which led to the halmet to halmet call but both of these players are tough and know the risk involed in the game

whether he lead with his head or with his shoulder, the fact of the matter is, football is a very violent sport. And whether or not players intentionally do these things or sometimes just can't avoid collisions when running full speed, well doesn't matter much, because FOOTBALL IS A VERY VIOLENT SPORT. I doubt that any or these players were tricked into thinking otherwise by some smooth talking coach or recruiter! No, they play the game because they love it, and probably realize the risk associated with it. To those of you who might become squeamish at the sight of these ground shaking, bone crushing blows; you might want to stick with watching polo or a nice round of golf! Dat's jis da troof!! Rulz schmoolz, sometimes ya need to make a point!

Oh yeah, and I would imagine the reason everyone was booing was because we did not get the same call when LSU and La Tech played. If I remember, Boyd clearly, without a doubt, intentionally, lit up Tolliver with helmet to helmet. So it was not necessarily that the fans did not agree with the call, but the double standard!

#10: You are right in that you can't avoid collisions (lol, obviously, it's football) But you CAN avoid leading with the helmet. It's not that hard, all you have to do is do a FORM TACKLE. Something that seems to be lost among 99% of players today. It's hard to watch all the guys lead with their shoulder/head to make tackles, when wrapping up does the same thing, and wont give anyone a concussion.
I hope I can become a coach someday, because NONE of my players will see the field if they try and "tackle" with their shoulder/head.

@#11: That is still a stupid reason to boo. They were two different sets of officials. And even if they weren't, it's a COMPLETELY different game.
If you were honestly booing because of something that happened 2 weeks ago then you've got problems.

Football is a violent sport? Yes, cripes, but the head is off-limits, particularly the head of a defenseless player. What on earth is the matter with some of you? Have you not been reading the horror stories of the long-term damage from football concussions?
    http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/01/26/athlete.brains/index.html
What has to happen for some of you nitwits to comprehend the danger? Does a player have to be killed or permanently maimed by an unnecessary hit to the head? Or would it suffice if we translated the CNN article into one-syllable words so that you can understand it? A deliberate or reckless blow to the head of any defenseless football player should be a 15-yard penalty, an automatic ejection, and a one-game suspension. A second offense should be a one-year suspension. Three strikes and you're out for good.

He didn't lead with his head, he led with his shoulder. There was no helmet to helmet as he hit the receiver in the shoulder pads. This causes the helmet to come off and go forward making the hit look even worse and probably drawing the flag. It was a beautiful hit and that shot should be taken by any safety when encountering a receiver coming across the middle. You come across the middle, you pay the toll. Again, it was a thing of football beauty.

Look we can all argue whether the hit warranted the call or not. Personally, I don't think so. But, being at the game and 15 yards from whether that collision occurred. The three officials did not throw a flag. The line judge who was standing at the 30 yard line threw the flag. GARBAGE! Look at the video. The ref in the back of the endzone less than 10 feet from the collision doesn't throw the flag, yet some guy with can see it and all it from 30 yards away. That's BS!

Chad Jones is a bad mutha!!! He led with his shoulder though, you could clearly see him lower his should and throw it out there first. Everyone is jealous of Chad being the baddest mutha on the planet. Did I mention he can throw 95 from the left side and break it off on baynches. DREADLOCKS of DOOM!
