Utah 31, Alabama 17. Say what you will about its relative talent, or lack thereof, but this much is certain about Utah: That team was prepared. Out of the gate, the defense had Alabama's head spinning with its presnap shifts, creating four sacks, a couple false start penalties and an interception in the first half. Meanwhile, the offense's opening, no-huddle touchdown drive was a Walshian masterwork, a perfect, crisp homage to the script in five rapid-fire snaps, and probably the most impressive start of the season in terms of marrying plan and execution. Utah knew exactly what it wanted to do, and did it confidently before Alabama knew where it was on either side of the ball.

The Utes also proved resilient, answering a turnover and quick Alabama score to cut the lead to four at the start of the second half with a 72-yard touchdown drive that ground the Tide's momentum to a halt, and surprisingly physical -- not in the between-the-tackles game I thought Alabama would win before the game (though Utah held up fine in that regard), but in making and especially breaking tackles, fighting for extra yards and winning those split-second tugs-of-war at the sticks that make the difference in first down and third or fourth. How on earth has a receiver as big, physical and clutch as Freddie Brown escaped my attention his entire career? (I'm not alone: It seems he's escaped the scouts' attention as well, despite his size and good senior numbers. I blame CBS College Sports.)The Utes equaled Florida for most points scored on Bama all season, and Brian Johnson was at least as impressive in this victory as Tim Tebow was in his.

Defensively, there were a lot of free pass rushers, and the Tide never settled down to run the ball effectively enough to get John Parker Wilson in his comfort zone in the play-action passing game. When Wilson tried to set up on the waggles he loves so much, he almost always had a Ute lineman or linebacker in his face. Alabama scored on a punt return and a short field after the Utes' only turnover -- and a freak turnover at that as the ball squirted out of Johnson's hands for no apparent reason. Even after its dominant opening thrust, Utah was just flatly good.

So: What we have here is a 13-0 team with the heads of four other ranked teams on its wall, the most recent of which was a top-five team that got pantsed on national television as a 10-point favorite. There's no difference in what Utah did to Alabama and what LSU did to Ohio State in a 14-point pounding in the Superdome last year; if the exact performances tonight were reversed, and Alabama raced out to a 21-point lead in the first 10 minutes while sacking the opposing quarterback eight times in an eventual double-digit win, the meme would be "SEC speed strikes again." I don't expect anyone to launch any similar raves about Utah's dominance, despite Paul Kruger and Stevenson Sylvester's repeated abuse of the Tide's rotating left tackle situation in the wake of Andre Smith's suspension. But how, exactly, the only undefeated team in the country will be written off under the circumstances is the mystery.

Appreciate the irony here, please. By providing the the ratings-challenged BCS its most thrilling game in two years, Utah also dealt another severe blow to the Series' fundamental conceit: Again, the two-team playoff is a failure. USC proved its failure by running Penn State out of the Rose Bowl, and even the Fox announcers wouldn't dare bring up the notion of a split championship, I'll say the same thing about the Utes I said Thursday about the Trojans: I'm not willing to say Utah deserves to be the national champion. But I defy anyone who watched the Utes methodically whittle a top-10 opponent into frustration to honestly argue that they don't deserve a shot.

That has to be the first time that I've ever seen Nick Saban legitimately, badly outcoached in a college football game.

As a BYU alumni (arch rivals of the Utes), I say the Utes deserve to be ranked #1 at least by the AP.

There is know doubt about this win, that shows the flaw in the BCS system. It is time for the BCS to finally see that there needs to be a playoff. The "BCS Busters" have shown over the years that they can play with the best of um...and win! If every college football fan is like myself, they also want to see Utah now play the winner of the Oklahoma vs. Florida game to have a true champion. I believe I can speak on behalf of many fans when I say that we need a playoff for the fans and to crown a true champion without any questions asked at the end of the season. Let me expand on that.....we the fans do not just need a playoff, but we demand a playoff.

Now we all know what BcS stands for. Alabama was No. 1 for 5 weeks, and without a last minute loss to Florida, would be playing in the BcS championship. Utah has now won 8 bowl games in a row. I understand every program needs too earn respect, but this is idiotic. 13-0 and you trounce the #4 team in the BcS? And I am not even a Utah fan!! They have to be pissed.!!

This is why college football is a joke. How can a team, that has won every single game, including a game against one of the best teams in college football not have any chance of being called champions. What a disgrace to sports FBS has become.

i am now more than ever very much in favor of dropping the big 10, big east, or acc from "automatic BCS bids". The mountain west went 6-1 this year against the pac 10, and utah totally dominated tonight. the mwc deserves a bid. the fact that 50 to 70 years ago, Utah, BYu, TCU, etc. either were terrible or didn't have football should by no means relegate them to "lesser" status anymore.

Time has so long passed for a playoff, this blows the BCS out of the water! That Utah won't get a chance to be number 1 by playing for the championship is a disgrace, as they beat one of the most physical teams in the nation in every facet of the game, including physically.

Also, if you have a team in the top ten, and after the BcS games are over, and you crown a team with 1 loss and ignore a team with no losses...that is just a joke.

Just shows Alabama a pretender not a contender. Getting thumped by a cowboy college, from an obscure conference. Any other SEC team (including South Carolina) that played in a bowl game would have beaten Utah. I heard a rumor the Alabama players were confused by the indoor plumbing at the stadium and due to this were not at the top pf their game.

I was totally in shock by Utah's defense, they played a great game and executed flawlessly. Does the OU/UF game have any meaning? Should USC and Utah deserve a shot? Should there be a Utah vs USC game and the winner takes on the winner of OU/UF? I think it should. If the bowl games would have been playoff games, depending on how many teams made the playoff, then Texas Tech, Cincinnatti, Penn St, and Alabama would have been eliminated. Therefore leaving VA Tech, Utah, USC, and Ole Miss still alive, considering the Cotton Bowl was a playoff game. Going back to 2004, when another Utah team went undefeated and crashed the party. The point is this, Utah could be blown out by USC, OU, or UF.......or vice versa.......the point is that they had a legitimate shot at a National Title, and with this BS championship series we have now.......we will never know unless the NCAA will take charge and kick the politics out of college football. Now i see why the Big 10 was in favor of not having a playoff, they would never make it to another title game. I am a loyal ACC fan (UVA to be exact, and we did not even make it to a bowl this year) and we did not do as well as i thought we would. All ACC bowl games were close except for the GT/LSU game. I was one of the people who thought the Pac 10 was a weak conference, and did i eat my words or what? The Big 12 proved to be a conference that could put up points on eachother, however when playing someone from another conference, the other team's defense stepped up and made it hard for them to score. I cannot say the SEC is the best conference this year because the Pac 10 went undefeated, and i know they only sent 5 teams to the bowl games, however they had some worthy opponents and most were upsets minus the Rose Bowl. I feel the SEC would be second this year followed by the Big 12 and then the Big East. The bowl games were entertaining for the most part and when i saw the matchups, i was like what the hell is this? For the most part i was satisfied with the games. Some games that stick out as of today would be: UNC/WVA, CLEM/NEB, ORE/OK ST, MD/NEV, VT/CINC, ALA/UTAH, OLE MISS/TTU, MIZZ/NWESTRN, and BC/VANDY.........if i forgot any, then feel free to repost the ones i missed. Now it is on to basketball season where March Madness is one of the best times of the year....GO HOOS BEAT XAVIER!!!!!

Agreed with most of the posters above: Utah kicked Bama's ass and even Florida didn't do that. There was no fluke here, if anything Utah should have won by 20+.
Using the resume system so in vogue by bloggers, where do you rank Utah? I actually think their resume looks pretty good compared to Oklahoma (wins over Tech, Cincy, and Okie State degraded by bowl loss). Both teams beat TCU. Both would have wins over an SEC foe (Florida being a notch above Bama), Utah also has wins over BYU and Oregon State. I think it would be pretty close.

Utah fans need not become excited. Their winning is classic case of a blind hog finding an acorn now and again. This game could be played over 10 times and Bama would win all ten. This is the same thing as the Jets winning Super Bowl III, just pure blind luck at its best .

I enjoyed Utah's dismantling of Alabama as much as just about anyone, but the absence of Andre Smith completely changed the dynamics of this game. Had Smith played, I seriously doubt Utah's defensive players would have been in the backfield so much.
On the other hand, Alabama looked completely unprepared for Utah's offensive attack, for which Smith would have made little difference.
