Well, consider this day completely hijacked by the SEC catfight initiated this morning by Lane Kiffin, when Tennessee's new coach accused Florida coach Urban Meyer of "cheating" for calling then-Gator commitment Nu'Keese Richardson during Richardson's official visit to Tennessee last weekend. (Or, more precisely, initiated when Kiffin plucked Richardson and cornerback Marsalis Teague from under Meyer's nose on Wednesday, when both UF commits suddenly signed with the Vols). Florida, seeing no need to air dirty laundry, elected to address the accusation against its coach discreetly and professionally, behind closed doors, where it wouldn't be blown out of proportion by the ... ravenous ... media ...
Actually, you know what? Screw that. The Gators are bringing the smackdown:
Lane Kiffin apparently owes Urban Meyer an apology. And the new Tennessee coach needs to read the NCAA rule book.
[...]
Kiffin's accusation is false, because there is no NCAA rule that prohibits a coach from calling a prospect while he's visiting another school during a contact period. This past weekend was a contact period."There is no rule that would prohibit Coach Meyer from calling a prospect at Tennessee on a Friday or Saturday during an official visit during a contact period," said Jamie McCloskey, UF's NCAA compliance director. "There's never been a rule. I've been doing this for a long time. Not only has there never been a rule, there's never been a discussion about having a rule."
UF athletic director Jeremy Foley said he confirmed with the SEC that Meyer didn't break any rules and demanded an apology from Kiffin. That brought out the big guns: Conference commissioner Mike Slive hammered Kiffin this afternoon for violating the SEC's code of ethics, under which "coaches and administrators shall refrain from directed public criticism of other member institutions, their staffs or players."
In Kiffin's defense, there was no such response from any corner when South Carolina's Steve Spurrier (wrongly) accused Kiffin of a similarly petty recruiting violation on Kiffin's first day on the job back in December. Still, when the league commissioner throws his weight around, it's time to swallow your pride:
"I apologize to Commissioner Mike Slive and the SEC, including Florida AD Jeremy Foley and coach Urban Meyer. My comments were not intended to offend anyone at the University of Florida."
Frankly, I'm a little disappointed in Kiffin's contrition. As I said this morning, I don't care either way about minor rules violations, but the audacity to invent a rule out of thin air, then call your most imposing rival on it in public, is the kind of chutzpah that will take you straight to the top in this country. I liked the guy who was willing to call one of the top coaches and recruiters in the country a cheater, in no uncertain terms, whether he was right or wrong. Obviously, that guy didn't care about offending anybody.
Not so this afternoon. Welcome to the SEC, kid.

also, how do you know that Kiffin told Richardson to keep the trip a secret? sounds like the typical bs from the typical whiny UF fan.
Sounds like you're grasping for straws, chief..better luck next time!

You misspelled your own team's name. It's Tenne$$ee. And UcheaT has been spending money for years, just not publicly. That's why Kiffin swiped a couple of Florida's rejects. Tee Martin is probably still drawing a check off UcheaT. See you when you get your whooping around the the 3rd Saturday in October. Maybe when Kiffin gets run off in 4 years, Phatphil the Krispy Kreme King will come back.

He allows criminals to play for his team. Ronnie "The Rifle Man Wilson", Stanley Tookes, Avery Atkins, Jamar Hornsby, etc... Meyer claims to recruit the top 1%of 1% but he is a two-bit shyster.

Quality teams like Michigan (what a joke), UNLV, Utah State, Air Force, Weber State, Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico (?!?!??!?!?!?!?), and San Diego State!!!!
The ONLY halfway decent (note: not outstanding) teams Utah beat were: Oregon State, TCU, BYU. If that's what you call beating quality teams, then I have some oceanfront property to sell you in Utah, and I would also like to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge....Really? quality teams? The ONLY quality win they had ALL year was against an Alabama team that was without Andre Smith (and his backup was injured in the 1st Qtr) and Alabama was in letdown mode from the SECCG. Now let's compare that "monster" schedule to UF's, shall we?
Unimpressive wins: Hawaii (but bowl team), Tennessee (although usually impressive), Arkansas, Vanderbilt (but bowl team), Citadel
Quality teams: Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, Miami, LSU, Florida State, Kentucky, South Carolina.
UF played and beat 6 ranked teams including TWO NUMBER 1's!!!!, 11 bowl teams, and played in the toughest conference in CFL. Utah beat 3 ranked teams (only one ranked in top 10), and only 6 bowl teams. Just because a team goes undefeated does not make them the best. I have said this before, and I will say it again for you....I could go out and form a rag-tag team of my friends (ages 20-35) and we could play 13 games against junior high school kids (ages 13-15), and go undefeated. Does that mean that my fictional team should go to the NC game just b/c we are undefeated...NOOOOOOO!!!! The way it is set up, you have to have a good record ***AND*** have a good strength of schedule (key word in that sentence being "AND"). That is why USC did not go to the NC game...they had a great record, but didn't really play anybody good, so they were ranked high, but not high enough!!! Same with Utah. For the last time, Utah WAS undefeated, BUT they did NOT have a strong enough SOS to push them into the title game....GET OVER IT!!!!!
