Update the coaching board already: Word has emerged from the Auburn bunker, and it is that Tommy Tuberville is out as head coach. Official announcement could come later today.

Auburn lost six of its last seven since the start of October, with the only win coming against Tennessee-Martin, but otherwise, Tuberville only went undefeated four years ago, beat the hated cross-state rival six times in a row and won 45 more games in 10 years than he lost, is all. Along with Phil Fulmer, let the corpse of Tuberville's tenure be a lesson to Lane Kiffin and fellow incoming mercenaries, and the existing mercenaries as well: Woe be unto the SEC coach who takes a wrong turn with his offensive coordinator hire. Half-hearted transitions and young quarterbacks buried two of the longest-serving and most successful coaches in the country in a matter of a few weeks.

Expect the phone calls from Mississippi State to begin right ... about ... now.

Rumors are already flying about Tubs' successor, starting with one very intriguing name and one very ... let's say ... familiar name possibly waiting in the wings:

An unofficial Auburn representative has reached out to people close to Arkansas' Bobby Petrino and Texas Tech's Mike Leach to gauge their interest in succeeding Tommy Tuberville if the school decides to fire him, a source familiar with the contacts told The Birmingham News.

Those contacts took place before talks between Tuberville and Auburn officials about the coach's future resumed today.

Three sources close to the Leach camp said the Texas Tech coach would consider Auburn if the job were open.
[...]
One source close to the Petrino camp said Auburn's window to hire him all but closed last year when he left the Atlanta Falcons for Arkansas.

Leach is just interesting, for the same reasons he was an interesting candidate at Tennessee, especially for another traditionally conservative program that just got badly burned by its attempt to ride the spread wave. But Petrino, of course, was the target of the infamous Planegate in 2003, from which Tuberville emerged triumphant with the public shaming and resignation of president William Walker and athletic director David Housel and a 13-0 season the following fall. Firing Tuberville would be one thing, but if you really want to wound the man, to rub it in his face, there's probably no better man for the job than Petrino, mercenary par excellence.

Remember also that the Birmingham News is also the paper that got the "Rich Rodriguez-to-Alabama" story completely wrong in 2006, which may be a rather petty thing to bring up two years after the fact. But fool us twice, etc.

And why wouldn't they hire Petrino? His 5-7 season at Arkansas was obviously -way- better than Tubby's 5-7 season at Auburn.
And you missed the most salicious rumor - Tuberville to Missippi State. Maybe he's hoping to "collect 'em all" in the SEC west.

With this news maybe a jump to the pro's is best suited. How about Detroit? Can't be any worse.
Beat Alabama 5 years in a row and lose the sixth game and you're out. Seems reasonable.

Tubby's going to Clemson. Leach is a flash in the pan. Petrino's overrated. Fulmer is the best available coach.

I think thats bull [profane]...he has 1 bad season in 10 years, he's 4th on the list for most wins at auburn and he has a 7-3 record in the Iron Bowl...they shouldnt have fired him. Now if he would have kept going 5-7 or worse over the next year or two, yeah that would make more sense...but after 1 bad year? Somebody needs to pull their head outta their ass and realize what a HUGE mistake they are making...

I don't tt hink Petrino is going anywhere. I'm sure those have been the famous last words of Atlanta and Louisville, but I think Petrino has great potential in Arkansas. He was really hammered by the media over his quick leaves and he wants to shake the "quick flight " reputation. Petrino hasn't really had a chance to do something in Arkansas and I think he is geared up to do so. Besides, I think the Razorbacks will have a better record than Auburn over the next 3 years. Saban is basically God to Alabama, so recruiting for Auburn is shot. Look for Petrino to stay atleast one to two more years in Arkansas. If he's not in the top 15, then he'll probably move on.

absolutely absurd...this guy has been fantastic at a school in a very small town in the middle of nowhere...he has 1 bad season very similar to coach fulmer at tennessee....both schools if they had a good or experienced QB would have never fired either of them....clemson can be grouped in this as well ......three fan bases who expect way too much....this is what college football has become and it is not good for anyone....three very good coaches let go for an off season...we have completely lost our minds as college football fans....who is next pete carroll for losing one time or jim tressel for splitting a conference title.....for the love of god fulmer was a touchdown away from winning the SEC last year.....it is a sad state of things when good people and good coaches who can have huge impacts on the life of young men are fired

God forbid a coach has a bad year now a days.. .you wait, Richt at Georgia will struggle a bit next year, lose to GT again and get the boot or at least be on the hot seat. Maybe if Peter Carroll loses to Oregon State again he'll get fired!
What do fans want...every school can't go 12-0!!!

My compadres have created a bogus sort of myth of Saban-coached Bama as being a "Coach Killer" - because four teams have now fired their coach soon after Bama beat 'em.
I don't really think that that's the case - I think that the problem is ridiculously high expectations and a complete unwillingness on the part of the powers-that-be to accept parity. But it's coming - 5-7 (and 7-5) seasons will become more and more the norm, except in places like USC where one school has their pick of the recruits for a whole conference.
Being the child of a mixed marriage (Dad was an Auburn fan) I am very sad to see Tuberville go.He was a worthy opponent.

tubby was a good coach, but any coach in the sec knows that he's as good as his last season. auburn was embarrassed this year offensively. the auburn defense held there own for the first few games. there was no fight in defense by the end of the season. the bottom line is that coaches get paid millions of dollars to do one thing: win. he didn't do that this year. his chances of doing that next year weren't looking good.

For all of you who have stated that Tuberville had one bad year in ten - you have to examine more than just the won-lost record. No one expected anything out of him his first year and rightfully so. But since that time Auburn, under Tuberville's tutelage, has failed to meet or exceed expectations (of the football experts and the fans) every year with the exception of 2004. As an Auburn fan I was torn about whether I thought Tubs should be fired but after much thought I do believe it was time for a change. With all the talent Auburn has had over the past few years and the inability to win conference championships and compete for national championships it was apparent that Tuberville, though a good coach, was not the guy to take Auburn to the next level consistently. My hopes are that the powers that be at Auburn does whatever it takes to hire a top-notch coach. I am afraid they will be too tight-fisted to do it but I can only hope.

If you go to auburn and ask ten people if they think tuberville should have been fired, 7 of them would say no and the other three would probably be hungover from the 36-0 smackdown we took from Bama. All in all i think we should have kept tubbs but after the 13-0 season, each season kept getting progressively worse record wise under tuberville until today. Good luck somewhere else Coach Tuberville.

Firing Tuberville was a huge mistake. He elevated Auburn football to a perennial contender and it means nothing. How dare the powers that be not allow Tommy at least one season to right his ship. Horrible decision...who would they get that is better? Mike Leach? What has he done? Bobby Petrino? Is it even debatable?

Auburn University Athletics have fallen sharply since Jay Jacobs took over as AD. Everyone sees football, but basketball and baseball haven't done anything since Jay took over. Jay ran off the most successful coach at Auburn two years ago, David Marsh (swimming). And the athletics as a whole has struggled under Jays realm. The next firing should be from Lowder and the President to an incompetent AD. Good luck to Tommy. He did a great job. I don't think he is to be at fault, but the people above him.

I completely agree with what Glenn D. posted a lil earlier.... In tub's 10 years on the Plains... he had 3 good years.. '04, '05 and '06.... every other year he failed to meet expectations... the talent at Auburn is there.... he just didn't get the job done.... I'm a diehard Auburn fan... and I have never liked him from the start... I didn't like him when he was at Ole Miss... But thats another story... He'll be a great fit for a school like Miss State... or maybe even Clemson... somewhere, where they'll be happy goin 7-5 or 8-4 every year.... ok well maybe not clemson.... but thats another story as well... I wish Tubs the best... I do respect him as a Coach.. I just think we can do Better... But anywho.. War Eagle!!!!!
