Translating Rich Gunnell and Jimmy Clausen, post-game (Updated)

Boston College receiver Rich Gunnell had a big afternoon with 10 catches for 179 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles' 20-16 loss at Notre Dame, then had a few choice words with Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen:

What did Gunnell say to draw Jimmy's ire? Dr. Saturday's expert lip-readers have narrowed down a few of the most likely options:

• "Ed Hardy is played, dog. Quote me."

  • "I do say, sir, that was quite the spirited scrum! We would be oh so appreciative if you could accompany your mates to our scone-and-custard brunch."

• "Pull my finger."

• [Whispering]: "Just like we planned, just like we ... okay ... push!" [To reporters:] "Oh my god, I had no idea he was so strong!"

• "I don't want to be starting nothing, but Theismann told me Powlus was better."

• "No, you can be my wingman."

• "Yeah, I said it: Kate doesn't deserve John."

• "Have you ever considered the role that Dianetics can play in your life?"

• "Your roots are showing."

If Clausen declines, Rich, I'll accept his invitation to the custard brunch. Call me.

[UPDATE, 11:57 p.m. ET] Gunnell clarified the exchange after the game, accusing Clausen of getting a little pushy before kickoff:

So, what happened? Here's Gunnell's version:

"In the beginning of the game, we were warming up, running on the field and [Clausen's] out there chirping and talking all this trash and he pushed, I think, Justin Jarvis. He just pushed him for no reason, and I just looked at him like, 'What are you doing? Who do you think you are?

"He's just sitting there still talking and then afterward, he was trying to be all friendly. I was like, 'I don't want to hear it now.'

"It just rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't like what he did. It just seemed like he was a little fake toward the end of the game because they won. I know if it was the other end of the stick, he'd probably be saying the same thing to me."

Clausen said he was just trying to say "good game"; Gunnell wound up calling Jimmy "phony" for playing the sportsman after the fact. Smirking and shoving ensues. I still think there were some hair-care tips in there somethere.

    Gunnell acted like a punk, if I says good game and you have have your finger in my face running your mouth.

    You really should not comment without knowing the full story.
    When BC entered the field to warm up, Clausen approached Gunnell and Jarvis and told them "Get off of my f***ing field, if you want to get to your side make sure you stay on the sideline and don't step on my f****ing field," with his little speech resulting in pushing Jarvis. Clausen continued to say things to the players as they were warming up.
    At the end of the game, Clausen tried to approach Gunnell to say good game and act like everything was fine, but Gunnell felt disrespected - before the game Clausen was clearly acting unsportsmanlike, and then when the cameras were out, he tried to act like a sweet guy. Why would Gunnell allow Clausen to make himself look good in front of the cameras when his "true colors" were out prior to the game?
    If anyone acted like a punk, it was clearly Clausen.

    it's call trash talking just about every player at every level does it from the pros to the backyard pickup game you do it to get in there head and i guess jimmy did stop whinning its football suck it up

    everyone talks trash before a game. Thats just how it is. Its part of getting hyped to play. Are you gonna sit there and tell me that no BC players were talking trash before the game? After the game is over however, it's no longer appropriate to talk trash, it's appropriate to congratulate your opponent because at the end of the day, its a game and it's about sportsmanship (and this exchange was at the end of the day). Apparently Gunnel doesn't understand that and is nothing but a thug and a sore loser. No class whatsoever BC.

    Clausen and ND are overrated. Surround me with 5 star recruits and I could easily get you 6 wins as an independent.
    Besides.....just look at the guy. Does he not just scream TOOL?

    Clausen is coached by Charlie Weis people, shouldn't that have something to do with Jimmy boy's actions? Either way, ND sucks, just not as much as BC.

    Abbyf--just curious, were you on the field? Do you have proof this happened or just making this up. Gunnell was acting like a little baby after the game. He ran his mouth like crazy for the whole game and then is upset when someone shows sportsmanship? Typical Backup College. Unable to make a name for themselves, they ride the backs of others to the limelight.
    Gunnell acted like a tool.

    Clausen is awesome. So he talked some trash. Who cares. Do you think USC wasn't talking trash last week? Look at his stats. Just think what they would be if Weis knew how to call plays. The Wildcat on 4th and goal? Stupid.

    Clausen goes over and says good game and an angry Gunnell sticks his finger in his face- Clausen walks away from what could have been a fight and Clausen is roasted by SI Hot Clicks, a clueless Matt Hinton and apparently everyone linking to this site......strange times we live in

    Two anti-intelligence institutes playing one another. just trying to confuse god. they should both be in the same conference with the likes of byu,tcu,smu,-------and call it
    the cult conference. the winner should then have their god proclaimed the best of the
    gruesome lot.

    Clausen is a bust. Word is he want to come out early. Good riddance. And this is coming from someone who played with Joe in the 70's. Second coming of Montana.....not even close.
