If anyone remembers him at all these days, Tony Mandarich is known mainly as the can't-miss Michigan State tackle who went from SI cover boy to doughy NFL bust in, like, two hours or something back in 1989.

Add another stirring chapter to the Mandarich saga this week, as the ex-No. 2 draft choice revealed to a completely un-stunned world that he used steroids while at Michigan State, even in the Rose Bowl. Don't even bother to say it ain't so, Tony!
Former NFL draft bust Tony Mandarich says he used steroids at Michigan State and faked a drug test before the 1988 Rose Bowl.
He also said during an interview on "Inside the NFL" that will air Wednesday on Showtime that he did not use steroids in the NFL but was addicted to alcohol and painkillers.
Mandarich, whose autobiography will be released in March, said he provided a fake urine sample to evade detection before the '88 Rose Bowl in which Michigan State beat Southern California 20-17.
Collegiate steroid abuse in the late eighties? Who could have possibly imagined, except literally every person who ever laid eyes on Brian Bosworth, a copy of Under the Tarnished Dome or virtually any member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers? Frankly, I am shocked -- shocked! -- that a publisher would consider investing in an attempt to pander to a jaded public with staggeringly obvious tales of non-titillation such as the Dromostanolone coursing through the visibly-quivering veins of Tony Mandarich. One-time Mandarich hyper Dr. Z, in particular, will be certain to go out and not pick up a copy (although, knowing the Redhead, she's sure to pick one up for Christmas, anyway. Yes, I used to write about him, dear. Yes, I was horribly wrong ... ).

I'm not big on the whole "ESPN gives us no respect" or "SI is out to get us" tripe that seems to infect every football fanbase in the country, but I've long felt that Dr. Z actually does hate the saints.
