Alabama 26, Auburn 21. When Alabama escaped an upset bid by Tennessee last month, I argued that every championship team at some point has to win those kinds of games, when the offense is stagnant, the situation looks bleak down to the closing seconds and the only "style points" are relative to losing. After Tennessee and the fourth quarter comeback against LSU and the epic touchdown drive to put away the hated Tigers today, count Alabama the reigning master of pulling out games that, technically, it probably should not win.

I don't know if 'Bama fans will protest that characterization, but this one carried the stench of impending doom almost from the opening kickoff. Auburn followed the same script Utah wrote for its Sugar Bowl upset over 'Bama last January, with nearly identical results. Just like the Utes, the Tigers came out fast, flooring the pedal with a surprise end-around that broke big for a 67-yard touchdown on their fourth snap from scrimmage, immediately followed by a shrewd onside kick and a subsequent touchdown drive that put the Tigers up 14-0 before 'Bama had even had a chance to catch its breath -- or, you know, get its offense on the field.

They weathered the Tide's counterpunch in the second quarter and struck big again to back on top in the second quarter. They literally took the Heisman frontrunner out of the game, limiting Mark Ingram to a long run of eight yards and relegating him to the sideline in the second half in favor of freshman Trent Richardson, who didn't fare much better. They pressured Greg McElroy, dropping him three times. They held the Tide to a pair of field goals to preserve the lead following an interception and punt return on consecutive drives that set up the 'Bama offense in Tiger territory and threatened to turn the mounting momentum. With the lead in the fourth quarter, they forced the struggling Tide attack to start its final two drives at its own three and own 21, respectively.

The Tigers held 'Bama to fewer yards than all but one other defense this year, gained more yards against 'Bama than all but one other offense and outgained 'Bama by more than a yard per play. They hit every note in the script, ticked off every line on the checklist ... and still lost. Whatever else they may be missing in the way of panache, you can't accuse the Tide of lacking resiliency.

What makes this game different and more satisfying than the thriller against Tennessee -- other than coming on a hated rival's home field -- is that the Tide actually had to rise up and seize this victory from the jaws of defeat, rather than hanging on for dear life as the seconds wound down on a narrow lead. The 15-play, 79-yard, seven-plus-minute march for the winning touchdown is a Daniel Moore painting waiting to happen, with McElroy's 7-for-8 effort and touchdown toss to Roy Upchurch surely surpassing Terrence Cody's blocked field goals against the Vols as the defining moment of what may still be one of the greatest seasons in school history.

Well, pending next week's inevitably dramatic, winner-take-all showdown with Florida, of course. Officially, nothing about that game has changed. But after today's eggshell routine, it's going to be an interesting battle in the Yellowhammer State this week between the feeling of "destiny" and "nausea."

How 'bout, "Tide wins, and discovers the exact same set of reasons to worry?"
Seems like that would be a bit more apropos, yes? No offense Matt, but when Texas wins by double digits, and A&M never has the football with a chance to take the lead in the 4th quarter, they're seriously flawed, and you go out of your way to point out that they don't belong in the conversation with national champions of years past. However, when Bama wins (another) game that they should have lost, they're 'resilient', they 'seized' the victory, and they're to be lauded for their gritty comeback.
I'm not accusing you of having an agenda; I mean, if you do, it's exactly the same as the rest of the press in this country, so that's understandable. You just got caught up in that same 'nausea' I guess.....

Looked like SEC officials to me. Linesman kept marking ball for Bama 1/2 yd farther. Also big time pick thrown for Jones by slot receiver on final drive. Somehow refs missed it. Looks to me like UF will manhandle Bama again.

Texas and Alabama BOTH looked less than stellar this week
Texas offense was solid but the Horns gave up way too many points and yards
Bama's defense was its usual self but the Tide offense had only one impressive drive the entire game... they were out-gained 2 to 1 on the ground

Admittedly I am a Bama fan, and they sure didnt look like a championship team today...Auburn was ready and Alabama survived, barely.....But I have one observation that seemed to go on the whole game. Auburn looked like they were trying to cause injury, not just hit hard. Many , many times on tackles when the runner was stopped,,,, down, whatever you want to call it, Auburn made clear choices to continue with gang tackling and purposely falling on Bama players. Maybe legal, maybe not, but I think they were out to hurt somebody, anybody.....I dont remember Auburn playing that way in the past......reminds me of the old Notre Dame teams.

@#3: Bama's defense was its usual self? Really? How many other games have they given up back-to-back touchdowns on opening drives, forcing their offense to play from behind the entire game? Bama was downright awful today. Their victory is a testament to what superior talent can overcome when you don't turn the ball over. However, if they get more 1st-place votes on Sunday, every voter who puts them ahead of Texas should have their vote taken away. Permanently.

#6 - considering the relative schedules of Bama and Texas, anyone who votes Texas ahead of Bama is seriously deranged.
As far as who looks the best, I would go with Cincy and TCU, in some order.

Rivalry games are known for their unpredictability and it is that element of uncertainty which dismisses records and standings and replaces them with raw emotion that continues to make good teams like Bama and Texas look mediocre or over-rated. The pressure is on the highest rank teams to not just win but win in a most impressive fashion; for both Texas and Alabama to win their respective games at all with so much to lose is a testament to players and coaching staff alike. Let's not forget about the solid win by Cincinnati as well! The other 3 (Florida, TCU, and Boise St.) will have to match their intensity and make for what is shaping up to be a very good BCS series!

allhailcale, stop whining you incompetent prick. No one cares if Texas doesn't get respect. If you don't like Matt's writing, stop reading?
In any case, all of your arguments are moot because the Texas D gave up over 500 yards to a mediocre team. You are right about Bama's D not being itself, but if you honestly think Texas' D would have stopped AU today, you need serious help. My grandmother could have run on Texas last night.
In before your incessant whining in further posts...

Rivalry games are awesome, and anyone that thinks FSU or even Georgia (ok, well maybe Georgia) is going to just roll over is missing what's great about College Football. Texas and Alabama will be settled on the field! oh wait, that's what's wrong with College Football. RTR!

I wouldn't say the Tide "rolled" anyone today. I'd think twice bama blabbers before mouthing off so much. Like I have said all along, you won't get past Florida. Better start looking at which bowl you will be going to, because it won't be for the NC. If your lucky you won't have to face TCU or Cincy for that matter. They will beat you easily, just like Utah did. How does that humble pie taste?

Wow, just because I point out the seriously inconsistent tone in Matt's two articles means that I'm incompetent? I'd think that'd be a more appropriate term to designate you, since it seems that going 12-0 is meaningless if you give up 500 yards of offense to a mediocre team. Your logic, not mine. And by the way, I think Texas' defense would have shut Auburn down completely. Look at the two games, Mr. Incompetence. How did A&M put up so many yards? Purely on the back of Jerrod Johnson, arguably the most athletic QB in the country Players without the initials JJ rushed 24 times for only 83 yards last night. That's less than 3-and-a-half yards per carry to everyone but the QB. QB rushing and accurate passing is what hurt the Horns' D last night, and Auburn has neither of those.
Finally, I care if Texas gets respect, and my opinion matters just as much as yours.....now, who's incompetent?

@#9, I know you hate on Texas because you're jealous. The fact is that Bama trailed almost the entire game to a team that shouldn't have been in the game, while Texas hardly trailed at all and had chances to put the game away. Both defenses played poorly, Texas' D was trash, while Bama's was decent. The difference is that the Longhorns heisman contender (who should have won the award with his performance in that game), stepped up, while Alabam's heisman contednder was nowhere to be seen on the field. The only reason you are mad at allhailcale's post is because you know it will be Texas and Florida in the National Championship, and 'Bama has no chance in the SEC championship.

The game was clean all the way and the refs did not cheat Auburn in any way. Both teams played great ball it just come down to clock management and who scored last. This is normally a close game.

Throwing the ball and running the ball are two different things. Colt is a very good QB but put him against the SEC on a regular basis and he would not have the numbers he has

Well if you're going to argue on A&M's merits, Arkansas handled them in every way. I'll use your flawed logic and ask you how did Arkansas fare against Bama? Not well. Does that translate to a UT - Bama match up? No. But since you are arguing in transitive match ups, I will too.
I never said Texas going 12-0 is meaningless, you made that one up on your own incompetence. I said anyone could have rolled on Texas' D last night and that you were whining like a child about it. That's a fact. Your logic, not mine.
Here's to the SEC settling it on the field in the BCS championship with a Big 12 team, again.
Once again, in before your whining about Texas...

Alabama got lucky again! they should have lost to Tenn and SC. Auburn did suprisingly well. I'm proud to be an Auburn Grad!! The team that deserves to win doesnt always win. I was disapointed in the half time commentary
the announcers acted like bama fans! Where is the double digit Bama victory they were harping about?!!One reason I despise Alabama is the arrogance of their fans and they seen to get all the lucky breaks. I belive that Fla will give them an attitude adjustment

If I we're a betting man, I'd say that was probably the Tide's last hurrah of the season. I can't see McElroy beating Florida and he sure wouldn't win a shootout vesrus McCoy. Looks like another BCS loss to a mini conference team (TCU or Cincinatti) on the horizon again this year. Oh by the way, Ingram can kiss the heisman away, pretty bad timing to rush for 30 a day after McCoy rushes for 175 and a TD + passes for 300 and 4 TDs...

Brandon, idiot: put the pipe down and listen to yourself. And while you're at it, stop putting words in my mouth and making half-baked connections that aren't there. I didn't argue A&M's merits; I argued Jerrod Johnson's. Do you really want to take a stand that Chris Todd even belongs in the same conversation with JJ when it comes to QB play? Also, you said, "ALL your arguments are moot because the Texas D gave up over 500 yards to a mediocre team." All is a pretty encompassing term there, genius. Me making the stretch was simply a sarcastic extension of the logic that you presented. The fact that you can't follow it and try to use it in your retort against just further proves your incompetence. I'm finished arguing with you. It's like trying to convince a child that Santa Claus isn't real.....

@ 13. I wouldnt be so quick to say Bama doesn't have a chance against Fla. Fla only beat Tenn and LSU by only 10 pts each game and for those who remember the Fla -LSU, the ONLY Fla touch should have been called back [replay clearly shows offensive pass interference] so anyone who knows football would agree Fla only beat LSU by 3 pts! Texas is a great team but the schedule strength is nowhere as strong as BAMA and a handful of teams could have went 12-0 on that schedule (Alabama, Fla, USC, OK(healthy), Ore..just to name a few. Judging Bama (or Tex) on these latest rivalry games would be a mistake for all of you. (nobody counted out Fla last year)

And whether you like it or not, your team does have more to prove because you went 0-2 when it COUNTED last year. And brother, it looks like you will probably go 0-2 again, when it COUNTS. Good 12-0 season tho. You're right there with boise. Poor bama.
