Texas 41, Oklahoma State 14. Coming into the year, the Longhorns faced three overriding questions about their national championship credentials: a) Could they find a steady back to take the pressure off quarterback Colt McCoy in the running game? b) Could they improve against the pass after giving up 30-plus points three times and finishing 51st nationally in total defense? And c) Could they demonstrate the intangible combination of "killer instinct" and consistency to run the table after enduring costly November upsets three years in a row? Two-thirds of the way through the campaign, they've emphatically answered two of those questions in the affirmative, and any concerns about the McCoy-centric running game remain, for all intents and purposes, apparently irrelevant.

Texas is outstanding on defense in all the conventional ways -- it will continue to rank in the top 10 nationally in total, scoring, pass efficiency and rushing defense after throwing the vaunted Cowboy offense into a sack tonight and tossing it over a bridge just outside of town -- but it also reminds me of last year's dominant, underrated Florida defense in two aspects that strikes me as the sign of a truly elite defense: Like the Gators during last year's championship run, this UT defense forces turnovers at a furious pace, and (along with the special teams) it converts those takeaways into scores of its own.

The 'Horns added two defensive touchdowns tonight on interception returns to bring their total of non-offensive touchdowns on the season to nine, best in the nation and better than Florida's national-best seven non-offensive TDs last year in just eight games. Safety Earl Thomas alone has now taken two of his six interceptions to the house, including the pick-six that slammed the door on OSU in the third quarter.

That was one of five turnovers the Longhorns forced against a fairly prolific offense, their fifth game this year with at least three takeaways. Four of the last seven national champions (Florida last year, LSU in 2007 and USC in 2003 and 2004) have finished in the top five nationally in total takeaways, and the biggest difference between this edition of the 'Horns and last year's oh-so-close edition is that this team resides in that territory, and last year's team wasn't even close.

As a result, Texas isn't just surviving: Its only close outcome of the season was the 16-13 escape over Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, and both of its wins since have been brutal massacres of respectable outfits from Missouri and Oklahoma State, both on the road. The 'Horns hopped on Mizzou last week 35-7 in the first half, and had OSU packing it in tonight after Thomas' interception made it 34-7 barely five minutes into the third quarter. This is the same spot where last year's undefeated 'Horns, off a narrow win over Oklahoma State in Austin, fell apart defensively and let all of its goals slip away at Texas Tech. This team seems determined to close the door before there's even a hint of letting it slip away again.

forget texas, how about oregon? oh herb needs a whole box of kleenexes!! dont worry herb USC is probably only going to drop to 5th in the rankings. when are we going to start believing that USC is very overated!! somehow though they will still be in the mix for the national title because even though they are not that great they can still bring in what makes college football, MONEY!!

Thank GOD for Will Muschamp, because he has truly brought a SEC style defense to the Big 12, and is making up for the horrible play calling on behalf of the OC Greg Davis. Defense wins championships, and we got one of the best in the country! Hook'em

As usual, and this may come as a surprise to many who don't normally follow Big 12 football, UT was given some very questionable calls in the 2nd quarter, one that was completely ridiculous, which led to their easy victory. I think UT would've won the game, but the whole makeup of the game was changed dramatically when the officials didn't allow the obvious take away on the pass to Kirkendoll, who they said was down, despite still going forward and fighting for yardage. That was basically a 10 point swing, and very probable 14 point swing. At any rate, OSU went into halftime down 24-7, when it should've been 17-14. That is a big difference to make up, and sure enough OSU came out pressing to try to get back into it, and that made it even worse and led to the blow out. Just curious, was Bible or Chrystal on the officiating crew up in Stillwater?
The officiating has been so slanted in UT's favor over the years, OU's AD Joe Castiglione, sometimes has met with the officials before a game just to get it out there that OU will not tolerate any wrongdoing.
I can name many instances of UT favoritism, the biggest one involved KU a few years back which basically stole a game from the Jayhawks and gave it to the Horns.
Against OU this year, Franks didn't muff the punt they said he did, he caught it and made a football move, and then was hit and he fumbled. If Brandon Crow didn't make a TD saving punch on the ball, UT surely would've gotten 6 from that play. As it was, UT was awarded the ball after the "muff". Pure and utter BS!
In a way though, I can understand why the Big 12 allows this, after all, UT is the biggest money maker in the conference. Also, upsets just hurt the conference. The SEC has got this down to a science, don't allow your best teams to get beat. I think the Big 12 has gotten it down also.

It's true that conferences have a significant monetary incentive to get two teams into the BCS. The more teams that get into the big money BCS games, the more money the conference gets. The conference, mind you, shares the paychecks from the bowls. If one team gets into the BCS championship game, then another team from the Big 12 can get into the next BCS bowl much more easily. This year, the Big 12 would protect Texas, and the SEC would protect Bama and Florida. As long as Texas squares off against Florida in the BCS title game, Bama could face off against, say, OU or OSU in another major bowl.
Kansas Coach Mark Mangino called the Big 12 refs out after their game with Texas (that Whisky is referring to). Great moment in ESPN/ABC/Versus/CBS journalism that they quashed the press conference.
UT is indeed the Big 12's cash cow, like USC is the Pac-10's. UT sells the most merchandise, and has the biggest Athletic Dept budget. USC is in the biggest market for the Pac-10, sells more merchandise, etc, etc, etc. Powers that be.
But this is why college is so much better than the NFL! This creates BAD GUYS like UT, and USC. Then you have good guys like Texas A&M and Oregon and whoever else plays the bad guys. Like it or not, it sets up stuff to obsess over, and post on yahoo blogs!

whiskey need some cheese with that whine TEXAS pulled its starts at the first of the 4th quarter. you can easily say the refs lost every game for everyone. if you didnt think that was a muff in the ou game you are not only blind you s*ck the big one and swallow. if the ref calls forward progress the play is over, if you watched the same game i did how many blocks in the back and holds did osu get. of i see that doesnt count. TEXAS is the mack daddy of college football this year and years to come you see the recruits the last 3 years? as a LONGHORN fan i cant wait till next year after we win the nc this year. did you see garret gilbert that kid is going to rewrite just about every record in college football in the 3 years he is qb. saying franks caught that ball and made a move is like saying big game bob can coach in the big games and we know that is a joke.haaaaaaa haaaaaaaaa i get it now. Give UT credit, but post 3 is dead on. That no call and mysterious election not to even review is complete BS and changed the whole course of the game. What could have been a good game was essentially over at that point.
Really not a fan of either team but I know BS when I see it. Appears UT is heading for National Championship with the support of ABC, ESPN and Big 12 officials. I do however think they are more deserving than anyone else in the country, despite playing only 2 meaningful games all yr.
Look for Arizona to upend the Ducks in a couple wks. That may be the most underrated team in ftball. B10 is a joke, Iowa, GT, Cincinnati any one in the big 10, all BS. To bad we can't see a Boise, TCU playoff and additional consideration after a big BCF game with either Bama/Fla loser or the like. That cinncy team is the same one I
recall the Oklahoma team beat by about 50 last yr. Any of the upper teams mentioned would destroy them.
Regardless, think we'll get a good NC game provided AM doesn't kick the longhorns ass again. Then we get
ARZ/ Iowa in the Rose, wait didn't they already play, thats just dandy. Did somebody say something about a playoff.

The whistle was blown on the Kirkendoll play. Dead. Over. You can't review a "fumble" after the whistle is blown. It's hilarious that OU is brought up into a discussion concerning refs. OU's offensive line is notorious for holding, and it takes a crew other than the Big 12 to call it (ie BYU). I had no idea that the OU AD complains, he should review some videos of his own team on offense, he'd be quite appalled!

The refs didn't throw 4 picks. Robinson did. The refs didn't make OSU drop passes. The receivers did. The refs weren't the reason for the OSU offense getting it's ass kicked all night. Texas' defense was.
As for OU, they get away with more holding than any other team in the country, b/c the refs wont call it. That's why they always lose BCS bowls - non big 12 crews that actually call holding.
And an OSU fan complaining about refs is hilarious. Go back and watch the OSU - UGA game from this season. OSU benefited from some very dubious personal foul calls, all of which changed the game.

Play calling seems to be the issue these days, not just in the Big XII but SEC as well. Regardless, give OSU props as they are a very good football team that can throw some points up. This game just goes to show how good Texas is and more importantly how focused they are this year. Get your tickets now Horn fans for the NC. We're goin baby! All the Texas haters can SAY whatever they want. But we all know it's Texas v Alabama or Florida in the NC. Period.

Colt McCoy conceded Monday he still was frustrated by his most recent performance.
But his annoyance probably was due to his lingering health issues and not the paltry 127 yards he had passing in a 16-13 victory over Oklahoma.
"The two biggest games of the year and I've been sick. It sucks," said McCoy, whose voice still was scratchy from the cold he caught last Thursday, two days before the Red River Rivalry game.
McCoy also came down with the flu days before the Longhorns beat Texas Tech 34-24. He scarfed down peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at halftime against the Red Raiders to replenish his sagging energy.
Still, McCoy has yet to miss a snap. And he said he doesn't plan to miss one Saturday night at Missouri, although he bruised his right thumb in the second quarter against OU.
"The nail probably will fall off," McCoy said. "It's like white right now."
McCoy kept his hands in his pockets Monday when he met with the media and didn't show anyone his thumb. He said his finger, which he slapped on the helmet of Sooners defensive tackle Gerald McCoy during the second quarter, felt better when it was supported in his pocket. Because the injury is on his throwing hand, he can't wear a splint.
McCoy's thumb was checked again Sunday once the team returned to Austin. McCoy said he will be able to play against the Tigers, who have been established as a 14-point underdog to the third-ranked Longhorns.
"It's sore, but it's not going to keep me out," he said.
Mack Brown said his senior quarterback, physically, has had bad luck in the past six games.
"He's had the flu twice," Brown said of McCoy. "There's no doubt he's overcome so much."
Brown and offensive coordinator Greg Davis said the goal is to give McCoy better protection. That's why the Longhorns may rely more on a three-receiver, one tight-end formation to provide an additional blocker for McCoy and the running game.
Plus, Brown has juggled the lineup at receiver to vary McCoy's options in the passing game, and at guard, to help with protection issues.
As of Monday, receiver Jordan Shipley will start along with sophomore Malcolm Williams and freshman Marquise Goodwin, who scored Texas' only touchdown against the Sooners.
Brown said Goodwin earned the job with his play against OU. He said Williams represents not only a speedy vertical threat, but also is a receiver who can block.
Meanwhile, John Chiles and James Kirkendoll have been benched. Brown said Dan Buckner, who has been hobbled with a knee injury, will be on the field when the offense reverts to its four- and five-wide sets.
Chiles and Kirkendoll had started all six games.
Kirkendoll kicked off the year with a bang, catching seven passes for 102 yards against Wyoming. But he's faltered since, with 11 receptions for 77 yards in the past four contests. He also was tagged with a personal foul against the Sooners.
Chiles caught two passes for only one yard against Oklahoma. He did have five receptions against Colorado the week before, but they amounted to only 21 yards.
Buckner, who has three starts this year, did not catch a pass against OU. He plays the flex end spot, but Davis said that the Longhorns do not run as well without a true tight end on the field.
In addition, Brown will open up the starting job at right guard. Tray Allen will compete with Michael Huey for the spot on the first team, and David Snow will be the primary backup to center Chris Hall.
McCoy said he watched the Oklahoma game again before focusing on Missouri. Although his numbers were comparable to his freshman year, he said his performance was "better than I thought."
"Yes, I was frustrated," McCoy said. "There were times our offense could have knocked the game out and it shouldn't have been a game."

You know what the difference is between the Big 10 officials being in the tank for Iowa or the SEC officials being in the tank for Florida and Tennessee?
Texas wasn't struggling at all last night and didn't need the extra help.
Anyone who says the refs were biased may be right, but it didn't make a bit of difference on the outcome.

Whisky: Did you watch the game? There isn't one human alive who thinks that Oklahoma State is a better team or should have won that game under any circumstances. Bad calls happen constantly in college football. Rewatch the game film of the 2008 Texas-Oklahoma or Texas-Texas Tech games and watch the ridiculous amount of uncalled holding committed by the OU and Tech offensive lines. This [profane] just happens. Texas is 10 times better than Oklahoma state.
Also your down at halftime = OSU presses and loses argument is BS. Have you checked the halftime scores of the 4 recent games where Texas was down to OSU by double digits at halftime and came back and destroyed them?
