Virginia Tech 31, Miami 7. In an otherwise regrettable preview Friday, I called the Hokies "masters of rope-a-dope," and if I got almost nothing else right, at least I made that overture to the script that actually unfolded this afternoon in the rain: Tech may start slow -- as it always does -- and may look like a complete wreck on offense even in wins, as it did in last week's miracle comeback against Nebraska. But going on six years now into its reign over the rest of the ACC, when the rubber meets the road, it's always Tech on top.

And if a Hokie fan actually was writing a script for this game, he probably wouldn't have dared to narrate anything so blatantly Beamer-esque as the reality: In three straight hours of pouring rain, the Hokies forced two turnovers while committing none, blocked a punt for a touchdown and pounded out a living on offense by physically beating the 'Canes up front to the tune of 271 yards rushing; freshman Ryan Williams relegated the loss of Darren Evans to prehistory with 35 bruising, effective carries. Most importantly, the defense, an obvious disappointment to this point, made icy, collected, swagger-y quarterback Jacory Harris look like just another sophomore in his second road start in bad conditions against a Bud Foster defense -- or worse than that, actually, if that's possible, intercepting the rising star of the early season once and offering nary a shot at the long ball the Hurricane offense thrived on in its first two wins. Classic Hokies all the way around: Nasty, brutish and short.

So now that it's thoroughly impressed against the rising threat of the Coastal Division, Tech may resume not impressing anyone en route to another ACC title, in the venerable Beamer fashion. Miami, I assume, will resume its offensive fireworks, if not next week against Oklahoma then against the very forgiving run over the ensuing month. Harris remains on the star trajectory, in general. But as long as Virginia Tech can keep dragging the chic picks down into the mud, especially when no one seems to expect it, the Hokies keep the crown.

And very quietly, Ryan Williams has the same number of rushing TDs as media darling Jahvid Best. Oh, did I mention he has more yards, too?

Say it again, man. The Hokies just win. They aren't glamorous (except on defense, which is typically spectacular), but they field a good team and they get the job done. Beamerball nearly won against Alabama, for cryin' out loud! Without any offense... except Ryan Williams. I hope Williams stays in school at least two more years. This kid is great!

we see no svidence that the acc belongs to any team yet, before any type of reliabale projection can be made, there have to be many more games played.

WOW. Just saw the recap on SportsCenter. At the end of the recap they said and I quote "Randy Shannon's team is better, but just not better yesterday."
Seriously ESPN? That's the best you can come up with after hyping Miami all week? Talk about denial.

I hate VT- and even I have to say that was a beatdown of epic proportions! Epic. Brutal. Not even close- if it was a fight they'd have stopped it.

If announcers weren't idiots and actually watched games from the teams they talk about they would know that even though the numbers are not there - every QB VT has faced has had trouble against them - Alabama and Nebrakas's QB's both had there worst games there - the majority of what Alabama did was after the defense had been tired out b/c the offense was horrible. When VT's offensive coordinator actually calls a good game (like against Miami and Marshall) you will see good things.

This one stung as a Miami fan. But VTech proved to be the better team on the field that day. Do I think VTech is that much better then us, no I do not. I do think that if these two teams played ten times this year the series would be 5-5, with a couple close games and a couple blow outs. To bad we do not get to play again asI would like to get some revenge lol. This is just one of the games were we could not get anything right, once we had some momentum in the 3rd, our TE drops two easy first downs and we lose what little hope we had.
The ACC is still up for grabs, we have a much easier schedule left then VTech does with our only hard game being UNC. So if we can win out in the ACC we have a more then better chance of getting to the title game and the BCS. But we also could still just be one more year away from winning the ACC and national championship.
Congrats VTech, good luck the rest of the year. I wish we could have a rematch in the ACC title game.

VT's opponents are 11-0 when not playing a team named VT - a little more respect please. Also how many other teams do not play a FCS team all year? The BCS rankings will continue to show how good VT is.

Miami is a pass team. Both of the DT were out with injury. Taylor is perhaps the worse passer in Major College football. Miami is based on Speed, That much rain makes everyone the same speed and slower players do better in slop. When we play in the ACC champ game we will see. Taylor will have to throw and it will get ugly when Miami has a lead and he has to accually play QB.

    Josh,
I give VTech respect, they are a Top 10 football and favorite in the ACC. I just do not think the score reflects how close these two teams really are. These are basically the same two teams that played last year which the Canes won 16-14, which is how even I think they both are. This is just one of those games were one team could never get it going and the other just couldn't be stopped. These things happen all the time. I just wish we got a second shot at you guys thats all lol.

This is typical for VT we her alot of excuses as to why Miami or Nebraska lost and we hear about how bad VT really is , but no mention of how these teams looked bad because of Techs defense or that they were just a little better than those teams. They lost one game to Alabama who is sitting at #3 . 19 the playmaker if you knew what you were talking about and were not too busy making excuses you would realize that Va Tech and Miami can't play in the ACC championship because they are in the same division .

Actually it wasn't the beatdown you claim. VT gets a bad pass interference call to score their first td. VT recovers their own fumble after the punt returner flubs it. Jimmy Graham drops two passes. It was a win, but the teams are closely matched. Don't flatter yourself
