Alabama 27, LSU 21 (Overtime). There's no question the Tide come out of Death Valley worse for wear in a lot of ways. John Parker Wilson completed less than half his passes with an interception and no touchdowns; his best play of the day ended in a fumble and touchback for LSU in the first quarter. The Tigers gashed the Bama defense for 200 yards rushing despite Terrence Cody's return to the middle of the line. And if not for the extreme generosity of Jarrett Lee, again a one-man Christmas for the opposing secondary with four interceptions -- one setting up a touchdown, one returned directly for a touchdown, one taking likely points off the board in Bama territory, one in overtime; all on third down -- LSU's advantages on both lines would have probably put the Tigers over the top.
Ultimate relevance of any of that: zero, other than the part about Alabama winning. As I said earlier today, style points don't come into play in Baton Rouge, no matter how brutal Jarrett Lee is, or how vulnerable the run defense looked for the first time all year. All the Tide had to do was survive, which Penn State couldn't do at Iowa, and shoot itself full of whatever completely legal painkiller it needs to get through Mississippi State.
For readers who watched the game, imagine for a second how good LSU might be with a competent quarterback. Lee has consistently cost the Tigers throughout the year (Rashad Johnson's interception return this afternoon was the sixth to go for a touchdown against Lee since his first jaw-dropping gift to Auburn two months ago) and the running game is just brawny enough to succeed in spite of the passing troubles, even against a defense as stout as Alabama's. If Lee could find a way to not make three of four crippling throws every week, LSU might look almost as good as everyone expected the Tigers to when they ranked them in the top 10 to start the season. Right now, with a marquee win over South Carolina, they'll be a little lucky to be ranked at all on Sunday, and unlike the blowouts against Florida and Georgia, you can't put this one on the defense.

Saturday afternoon. Last year Miles sneaked by Bama 41-34 when Bama was a rag doll team.
This year in Tiger stadium Saban kept the Crimson Tide focused for 4 solid quarters despite a lot
of adversity and then proved in OT that the Tide was a notch better than Les Miles's coaching
staff.
Too me a lot has to be pinned on the coaching staff either for the winning positive side or the losing
negative side.
I've given Nick his due now lets review Les Miles a little. Yes He has a serious Quarterback situation.
So serious that his RS Freshman QB Jarret Lee is destroying the term offense on this years team.
My opinion is that the staff is operating with sunglasses during the games both night and day.
I don't know how Jarret Lee can continue to take the mental punishment the coaching staff has allowed
him to endure. Yes its the coaching staff's responsibility for where the Tigers are at this point.
And with all the coaching blunders the 2008 LSU team almost pulled off an upset of number one Alabama.
I was listening to some post game comments from Greg Bowser and His thoughts mirrored mine when He
said the staff needs to sit Jarret Lee down for a while to collect himself and get to the point where He doesn't
feel like He has to make a big offensive play every time He's in the game. I think Jarret is shell shocked at
times in the games yet Coach Crowton continues to insert him in the game under the pretense that they
don't have another QB. I won't elaborate on the backup QB situation as I don't know what the politics are
here - one can just guess there is more than meets the eye.
Lets go back to some LSU QB history. In 1994 LSU was playing Auburn and went into the fourth quarter with
a lead on Auburn only to blow that game when QB Jamie Howard threw FIVE interceptions in the last quarter
and THREE of those interceptions were of the PICK6 variety all coming in the fourth quarter.
Blame coaching for that massive blunder. How can you let a student athlete remain in the game
when He was clearly in a shell shock mode. Also, what kind of offensive coordinator would continue
to put the ball in the air when your QB has lost his confidence and field vision. The 1994 coaching
staff had dark sunglasses on in the fourth quarter and LSU booted this game by the score of 30-26
It was one of those you don't want to remember games and this lost falls on the shoulders of the
coaching staff in this instance. Tunnel vision!

Florida looks incredible, of course, but anyone who thinks they should be ranked ahead of Bama needs to get their head examined. The Gators have had some impressive wins, but they also wet the bed against Ole Miss. If they get left out of the national title game, they have no one but themselves to blame.

Alabama has looked dominant for a game and a half, at most. Florida has looked dominant for most of the season. Alabama deserves to be ranked higher because they haven't slipped up yet ... but when the two teams play in Atlanta, Florida will probably win and I'll be surprised if it's close.

I would be slightly more generous to Bama but generally agree with the gist of your comment.
I would add that the LSU defense, though very good, the best its been this year and certainly good enough to win was hardly dominant. The LSU offense, however, especially considering how highly regarded the Alabama defense is, did indeed look to be of championship worthy...or would have with even average QB play. Their running game was the more impressive for lack of credible passing threat (well their passing game was thretaening though not to the Bama).

The Sec isnt as dominating as people thought they would be. The big 12 south is a much better conference this year and if your saying how good Florida is with its hiccup against Old Miss USC has looked dominating on defense and pretty damn good too.
Alabama is just not that good.

1. Texas Tech.......by 21
2. Texas.................by 17
3. Oklahoma.........by 17
4. Oklahoma St.....by 9
5. Missouri.............by 7
6. Kansas..............by 3
Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech & Oklahoma State will play 4 teams in the top 10 before their bowl games.
BAMA hasn't faced even ONE top 10 team yet and almost lost to #20 LSU yesterday.
9-1 USC hasn't played anyone in the top 20 and won't until their bowl game & lost to unranked Oregon St.
9-1 Penn State hasn't played anyone in the top 15 yet and lost yesterday to unranked IOWA.
9-1 Florida hasn't played a top 10 team yet and won't until the SEC championship game.
Utah, Boise, Ohio State - all would lose 5-6 games in the Big 12.
The AP & BCS polls are WHACKED - Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech & Oklahoma State all play each other in the Big 12 South plus the rotating schedule of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa State & Kansas State.
BEST CASE - FLORIDA GOES 8-3 IN THE BIG12 SOUTH...BAMA GOES 7-4...USC GOES 7-4

BAMA will need 36 to keep up with FLORIDA......SEC WEST might win 1-2 games in the BIG 12 South.

A strong team is a strong team so until there is a playoff system we can just sit and speculate how good/bad teams are.
So far OU has only played 1 tough game Texas and they lost. If you consider teams like USC and Bama weak then TCU is nothing special either. We will see how they stack against Tech and Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma State has lost all its tough games this year too. Texas lost to Tech but looked strong. I think if they played Tech again it could be a totally different outcome.
The reason these teams are seen as so good is because they put up insane numbers against foes such as colordao nebraska baylor kansas state texas a&M and div I-aa teams.
I am not trying to say these teams arent good but look at the facts. There are 3 really good teams in the big 12 texas Ou and tech. Ou state is good but not great missouri is good but not great. Pit these second ranked teams against ohio state or oregon state and they might lose too.

Are you serious with that crap, I mean do you honestly believe what you just posted? I hope for your sake that you are just trying to get under some fans skin.
"Alabama just not that good a team"??? They may or may not be the best team in the nation, we'll soon find out. But to say they are no good is plain stupidity. When is the last time ANYONE was ranked #1 in the 11th week of the season and just not that good? Alabama is a great team, particulalrly given where they should be at this point. As I said, they may get beat, I will particularly give Florida their due, they are impressive. But don't count Bama out before they get a shot...on second thought, do count them out, keep trashing them, that generally works out well for Alabama.
