It seems to me -- and I can't be the only one -- that anyone still clinging to the fantasy that anything will come out of the Mountain West's three-tiered proposal to reform the BCS is living the life of Princess Peach in the Mushroom Kingdom. Officially, last week's meeting of conference commissioners sent "recommendations" regarding the MWC's plan up for review to a committee of all-powerful university presidents, meeting today by conference call to rule on any changes to the Series before it signs its new TV deal with ESPN. But if statements like, "There was no overall support for the proposal," or "I did not see any merit to the Mountain West proposal" are any indication, there's no secret what those recommendations were. It's a dead letter.

Still, somehow, the Denver Post is holding out hope today that the presidents will see the light in at least one part of the MWC's plan, the one would permanently bounce the universally loathed marriage of human and computer polls:

... [MWC commissioner Craig] Thompson's committee is a great idea. The BCS standings would be determined by one representative each from all 11 major conferences, plus one from Notre Dame.

The plan's highlight is to boot the coaches poll into the gutter where it belongs. This poll is the biggest embarrassment in American sports this side of pro wrestling. Besides the fact that coaches spend less time watching other teams play than some Pop Warner cornerbacks, coaches can directly impact their own team's bowl fate — and their own salary — by their vote.

Agreed on that front, although, I'm not sure how a committee of a handful of interested "representatives" is preferable to to a committee of coaches and computers. (Whether those computers are actually allowed to work the way they're supposed to is another story.) It's less confusing, obviously. But the point is the same: When are they going to stop picking who can play for a championship from the pool of qualified teams? As long as there are only two when there should be six or eight, "reform" is just window dressing.

We can only dream of the day when more then two teams are able to decide the national title. Humans will rule the world one day and take over the hated computers!!

"...plus one from Notre Dame." Why would a small conference trying to level the playing field with the larger conferences include such a statement? I mean if the argument is that it's wrong for power to be centralized why give one school the same voting power as whole conferences? Does that seem odd to anyone else?

Why boot the computers and keep the humans (even if it is a different set of humans)? The computers are the ones screwing things up.

heffalump i agree with you i have never understood why notre dame has always been given so much influnce and credit but that is who the sports writers and the money seem to support so they get a bye and a voice in everything even when they can not win on the field of play

I really don't understand the reasons for giving Notre Dame such special treatment, and it's not just the proposal, this has bothered me ever since I heard about it, the Harris Poll voters are currently based on the following:
"Harris Interactive then randomly selected 10 from each conference, three from among the Notre Dame nominees and one from among the Army/Navy nominees."
So 3 voters come from those Notre Dame got to choose, and 10 come from a conference of as many as 12 schools.
Can anybody explain how this is "... a statistically valid representation of all 11 FBS Conferences and independent institutions"?

Notre Dame gets a vote because they have more National Titles than anyone else. They also have the most Heisman winners (tied with USC at 7). They have earned the right to the priveleges that they get. Also since when are there 11 major conferences. There are six major conferences plus Notre Dame with an elite team here and there out of a few of the wannabe majors (Mountain West, WAC).

There are 6 BCS conferences, their are 11 major conferences, since major is referring to Div 1A.
And by your logic, Mongolia should have the same international sway as the EU. Cause back in the day Mongolia was the biggest and baddest empire, and they haven't been topped yet.

This whole thing is dumb. Sure coaches could directly influence their team's ranking, sure they didn't get to watch to many games becaus they are too busy coaching. But at least when it is the coaches poll, you can average out 119 (or however many schools/votes there are) instead of 11 +1. Rankings are done better in averages, and averages tend to be a bit more accurate the larger samlpe you have. Plus this whole Notre Dame gets the priveleges is ludacris to me. Change that, and make it a single representative for all teams with-out a conference.
This is all still way to bogus, and I actually believe it is a step backward.

    3step,
All 119 (120 now that WKU is full status) dont get votes. Only a fraction of them do.
