Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier and Ron Zook don't like them. At least one coach in South Carolina thinks he has them wrapped around his little finger. The Doc, on the other hand, is a pretty avowed believer in recruiting sites, even when it comes to scouting future pro talent. I think they do a good job, very broadly speaking, in setting a reasonable baseline for expectations for outsiders. I tend to go with their projections on teams and players until there's better information, i.e. actual performance.

The key phrase in that paragraph is "for outsiders." Because I have "Rivals.com" scrawled across the top of my page, and still, even I think this is a little ridiculous, even if it does explain so, so much about what happened to the Hurricane dynasty under Larry Coker (emphasis added):

CORAL GABLES - Recruiting had become simple for the University of Miami football staff.

While counterparts were out scouring the country for the next All-American, the Hurricanes coaches were likely parked in front of a computer with a pad and pen. They surfed Internet recruiting sites in search of talent, almost forgetting their own evaluation in the process.
[...]
"That's accurate," UM recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt said. "We spent way too much time recruiting off [Internet] lists and finding these top guys instead of truly evaluating. You can't just go off hearsay or just because Florida, Florida State or Alabama is recruiting him. That doesn't mean a thing."

Independence is probably a virtue on both sides of this coin, but ideally, I think, the recruiting sites would be following the evaluations of the coaches, not the other way around.

So all those stories about the end of the greatest NFL pipeline in history when one lonely 'Cane was drafted in the sixth round in April? The mysterious decline of an elite program that, along with Florida State, seemed to waste more top-end talent than any program in the country? Here we have their roots: Coker's staff, surrounded by sought-after players in south Florida, was apparently just lazy about it.

Is that also the case at FSU, the only other elite recruiter with as wide a gap between signing day stars and on-field wins this decade? Maybe there's more to this than just injuries, academics and bad luck.

Florida and Ohio State should thank Coker for falling asleep at the wheel of the dynasty Butch Davis handed him. They benefited more than anybody from Coker's lack of recruiting prowess when it comes to the talent in South Florida. Thankfully Randy Shannon is righting the ship and the Canes will be back on top once again.

The Canes will be back, you can bet on that. They will have a winning season this year and make it to a bowl.
Although, just about everyone makes it to a bowl these days. I see them going 8-4 or 9-3.

Oh, and p.s.... to all those "know-it-alls" that cried for Coker when he "lost" his job...what say ye now? Coker was the worst thing to hit Miami since Andrew '92. What a joke of a coach.

To bad for Miami...All they have to do is only lose 2 games and they'll get a berth in the BCS Championship game because they are on the East Coast (And even more important, they are from the state of Florida). But they haven't even been able to do that. Poor guys....

The U is on the way back, mark it down. Got a win over a BCS bowl winner last year, the talent is there. Now Miami just need consistency, experience for the young talent will get that fixed. Cream always rises to the top. You can't play a bowl game for the national title almost 10 times in the last 30 years and not rebound.

Another issue that gets overlooked on many occassions when talking about recruiting in Flordia nowadays is the emergence of other schools/programs. South Florida, Florida International, Florida Atlantic etc etc. are just a few schools who are starting to level the playing in Florida. It used to be just the U, Florida St., and Florida. Now it's these plus about 5or6 more. Whenever recruits have options things will start to level out.

This is scary that coach shannon and his staff our going on the words of recruiting website to scout players...just another reason to fire him after the season. Everyone knew he was in way over his head for this job and this proves it even more. He didnt have the luxury of riding the coat tails of Butch Davis recruits like Larry Coker did, regardless would have got the same results with Shannon. I am Nebraska fan so I know what Miami is going thru in finding the right coach....

anyone that says florida needs to thank larry coker or butch davis is a dumb a$$...im mean come on man! gators are the new team of florida and all you canes and noles fans need to realize it and face it....noles WERE the team to beat in the early and mid 90's and the canes in the late 80's, but i will say the years of andre, willis, jonathan, ed and jeremy was probably the best recruiting i have ever seen in my life, but you should start taking a look at the recruiting of the gators...pay close attention canes and noles, because its going to be a long decade! I SAY ITS GREAT TO BE A FLORIDA GATOR!!!!!

Clearly some stars on a website or the knowledge that another big school is recruiting a player means absolutely nothing. College football teams are very system oriented, so talent is relative to what you are being asked to do. This is the reason that coaches create such complicated evaluation processes, because they want the right talent for their school - not just 'talent' in general. Unfortunate that the 'Canes messed up that bad, but recognizing the problem is half the battle, now they can work on bothering to recruit the right players and build the program back up.

Dude please your gator talk in check. You may wins the titles NOW but where is that talent in the NFL. The Canes and Noles are two, if not the best two, at putting NFL talent on the field. The Canes will be back and for the Noles, Well, Fear The Spear.

    1. notre dame had its choker( bob davie), followed by a very nice, but clueless, tyrone.
    2. charlie and his staff have done a fine job on the recruiting trail, especially in 2008( they will be sophomores for 2009), but with very serious academic and character requirements and no movie watching or ballroom dancing classes, notre dame has a much more limited recruiting pool than virtually every other school and some high school athletes prefer the full time athlete option in college- the same one they took in high school.
    3. however, that is the way notre dame and stanford have chosen to play college athletics and we are proud of notre dame and of charlie and his staff and of every notre dame student athlete, along with stanford.
    4. hopefully, miami(instead of repeats of ericson and davis) and other schools will follow similar paths now that the ncaa is finally starting to punish the cheaters, including florida state and alabama with usc coming up next.
5.after all, anyone who wants to watch pro football has the nfl. college football and basketball simply do not exist just for full time athletes, but only for real student athletes.
    6. yes, the buckeyes and flortida are the real deals on the state school side.

big tyme playa - your comments were ok till you talked out your ass about tOSU - they have actually lost more players pre-graduation to the NFL draft than 97% of all BCS schools - so -your point you made about "the U" is better directed towards tOSU - and you can cry that lame junk about "bad calls" but a win is a win
