The official charges against Florida State's Maurice Harris, arrested by the FSU Police Department Monday night, are "grand theft and possession of a motor vehicle with altered identification numbers," both capital-F felonies that have the reserve linebacker in serious hot water. On the surface, those are damning facts.

Here are some more facts, according to reports that trickled out today. The item stolen in the alleged "grand theft"? A parking boot, likely applied to a motorcycle for outstanding parking tickets. How did FSU police connect the boot to Harris? He was ratted out by an inadvertent snitch, his strength coach, Todd Stroud. How does a strength coach incriminate one of his players in multiple felonies involving a missing parking boot? The Orlando Sentinel explains:

... here’s what happened: Last week, on Wednesday, FSU parking services use a parking boot to immobilize a motorcycle. The motorcycle, police presume, belongs to Harris. The next day, on Thursday, the bike is gone. And so is the boot. Then, yesterday, someone spots the missing bike, sans boot. A campus police officer is called out to the scene. And FSU parking services indeed identifies the motorcycle as the one they’d booted just days before.

So the officer contacts Todd Stroud, the Florida State strength and conditioning coach. Somehow, the officer knew that Stroud had been riding around on Monday on this motorcycle ... OK, so Stroud says he’d borrowed the bike from Harris. Stroud calls Harris. The officer asks Harris, according to the affidavit, “to explain this situation about his motorcycle."

Next, the officer reads Harris his rights, and the officer begins questioning Harris "about the location of the missing parking boot." ... Then, according to the affidavit, Harris says he does "not want to continue the interview about the missing parking boot." So off to jail he goes, where he’s released early this morning on $3,500 bond.

The next step for police is proving that the motorcycle actually belongs to Harris, which, despite the arrest and bond, etc., multiple reports indicate they have not yet done. Lessons learned here:

a) Never trust a strength coach with your vehicle or your legal standing.
b) Always keep your tags, inspection sticker and registration up to date, and
c) If you find yourself contemplating a specific action, and that action sounds like something Homer Simpson would do ...

... reevaluate your options before taking further steps, OK?

The Coach did the right thing, what would you have him do, compound a Felony-Obstruct Justice. If the motorcycle had altered vin# then this young man is deep stuff. I remember when some Football players form CA stole some Handicapped Parking Sticker and the Coaching staff did nothing. As an FSU Grad I am pleased that the Coach did the right thing!
The Simpsons might think its funny but I don't.

Shows what you know, Matt. A motorcycle doesn't have any windows to break. . . mmmmm break. If you don't feel you were rightfully punish AND you don't get caught, its not illeagle.
And for my final joke (those were jokes?) why would you boot a motocycle? A car I can see, its hard to load a car onto a pickup (I tried). But a bike you can haul anywhere and get the boot off (except the Meineke next to the police station, won't do that again).

Back in the 80's I had a friend at UF (not an athlete) who removed a boot from his car. A couple of days later, I was in a different friend's car, and he was pulled over for speeding. While the cop was writing the ticket, we heard announced over his walkie talkie (sort of an APB, I guess) that my friend with the boot was wanted for questioning.
As I recall, they eventually agreed to drop the charges in exchange for return of the boot and payment of whatever outstanding tickets were involved. I guess boots are relatively expensive.

Don't the police realize that "athletes" are exempt from ALL laws? I can't believe that this poor "athlete" is being harassed by the police. When will society realize that ALL" athletes" are never guilty of ANY wrongs? I am sure that the lawyer that the college has on retainer will handle this case in the "athletes" favor and that all of the police involved will lose their jobs.

Posters, this is actually kind of funny. No he's not advocating the coach lie or anything - just commenting on a wacky situation. Just put it in collection - don't tell me you've never wanted to remove a boot or climb over the tow truck yard fence!

I bet he didn't learn to do that in music appreciation. This kind of misconduct reflects the tone set at the top. It's good to see Bowden finally get shot down. Coaches and tutors and other folk don't go cheating and breaking the law and breaking rules unless they think the boss man wants them to do anything necessary to keep the team on the field.

How many more games should Bobby Bowden be penalized for his gang stealing motorcycles?
Why doesn't Bowden just go to the Fla State Pen to get his recruits...kinda the same thing he has now.
