The South Bend Tribune's Jeff Carroll is brutally honest about Notre Dame's direction after the Irish's sixth straight loss at the hands of "little brother" Boston College: ND is 1-15 against teams that finished with winning records over the last three years, and the shutout in Chestnut Hill may have been the anvil that broke the camel's back in terms of goodwill among the faithful:

... if you do not have grave concerns at this point about his ability to steer a college program you are obstinately refusing to recognize what is right in front of your eyes. If your faith in his ability to motivate isn't shaken to the core, you are electing delusion.

When the book is closed on Weis' tenure at Notre Dame, there is a good chance that this may be the evening that revealed once and for all an irreversible downward spiral. The Irish offense, formerly a unit on the move, was an undisciplined, penalty-ridden mess. Special teams were a gaffe machine, with Golden Tate's fumble of a punt return, along with yet another blocked punt, adding to the comedy of errors.

Weis put it on the line this week, announcing proudly that he had hammered his players mentally for last week's second-half collapse against Pitt. And as it has countless times during his reign in these make-or-break games, Notre Dame responded by coming out as flat as a highway blowout.

Weis' answer: Not enough Weis. Now that the "hot seat" talk is migrating from ignorable rival chirping (and upscale, urbane, contrarian finger-pointing) into the local press, Weis is going to take "a more active role" in getting the offense untracked, or at least preventing Jimmy Clausen from another four-interception disaster when the ND defense is holding up its end of the deal. That probably means Weis is taking command of playcalling duties from Michael Haywood, his forté as a Super Bowl-winning coordinator with the Patriots and in briefly resurrecting the Notre Dame brand with Brady Quinn pulling the trigger. X-in' and O-in' is what the man does, after all.

The question is, how much trouble is the ND offense really in, to the extent that Weis needs to -- or is able to -- step in and save it. Clausen is on pace to go over 3,000 yards passing with 24 touchdowns. The Irish scored at least 24 points in six of seven games before Saturday's debacle. Yeah, the results have been fairly grim against decent teams, but what's so critical about that all of a sudden:

Service academies included as teams w/ < 7 wins, for the sake of honesty.

By comparison, in fact, this year's offense has been about as productive, and slightly more consistent from one pole to the next:

2008 to date has been right down the chalk of previous returns under Weis, though Michigan's collapse has softened the schedule a little, maybe. That must be it. So welcome back Weis to the control panel for the last three games, and a presumptive bowl game, somewhere or other. Expect great immediate returns against Navy and Syracuse, and one very ugly finale at USC. These days, until Clausen turns the corner the way Quinn did as a junior, that's just Notre Dame football as usual.

Weis is proving that a good coordinator doesn't always make a good head coach.

"Expect great returns against Navy and Syracuse?" I am a lifelong ND fan and if you told me they finshed 6-6, I would not be the least bit surprised. Did we already forget about Navy last year? C'mon, playcalling is not the problem. Lack of heart, motivation, and a VERY overrated QB are killing the Irish.

It's the lines. When you can't run the ball, and you can't stop the run, you can't win, and that's true in college and the pros. The Irish O line is a disgrace, and the D line is only marginally better. ND has some top skill players, but without the guys in the trenches, it's 6-6 (assuming they beat Syracuse, cause Navy will run the ball down their throats this week).

Sorry, they are signed up with NBC for a long time. There doesn't seem to be enough failure by ND for NBC to give up on them.

first problem with charlie was he acted like brady and the players left over from ty would be around forever...well, he didn't prepare his recruits properly and it showed last year...
second problem is o-line and d-line play...the o-line cannot create running lanes for anyone and they are only marginally better at pass protecting...the d-line, aside from kuntz, barely gets any penetration...its like the d-line is constantly rushing the passer and they forget to stuff the run...

BC had a good "D" to win the game. He also didnt call the 1st play after halftime against NC that was a "pick 6". Mich St. beat us, and Clausen missed a wide open Michael FLyod to beat Pitt. ND is fine, We (Irish Faithfulls) know next year and yr after is out shot.

The weis era most certainly has been a sad one, with an even sadder qb.
I an NOT a Jimmy fan, but a die hard Irish one and what Charlie has done is terrible.
I wish ND didnt sign him a 10 year deal after only 1 season.

It's time for Weis to go. Did you see him going for it on 4th and 1 at his own 48?? This guy doesn't realize that the Irish can't necessarily make a yard with the O line...and they didn't. This guy should go back to the pros because he lacks the smarts to be a college head coach. Where is George Kelly when we need him???probably winning football games somewhere.

What ever happened to Evan Sharpley? The dude looked solid last year and for some reason the guy didn't even get considered for the job. Just because you got a 5-star recruit doesn't mean that he's the best player for the position. Unfortunately Weis touted him as the next Joe Montana and he's going to play Clausen no matter what.
I"ll admit when Weis first came to South Bend he was solid. Seemed to make all the right calls at all the right times. The past 10-15 years have been so eerily similar. One coach comes in, wins right away (Davie, Willingham, Weis) and a couple years down the road they just don't pan out. I really wonder what that happens... Maybe the players just need change but Weis's job is in danger. People in South Bend hate losing and Weis's reign of mediocrity will come to a close at the end of the year if they finish six and six.

ND is not a football powerhouse. With the exception of 5 of Holtz’s 11 years, ND has been a marginal program for 30 years. Frankly, it would be worse if ND actually played a difficult schedule. The problem is not your coach; the problem is your geography. Very few great high school players want to go there when they can go to USC, LSU, Florida, Texas, Alabama, etc, etc. ND is saddled with lousy weather, nothing to do, too few beautiful women, and scholarship limits. You are trying to recruit 18 year old boys and they see things. Adjust your expectations and get off your coaches fanny, he is a good guy and he is probably doing as well as anyone could.

Outstanding recruiting??? I see a bunch of big, slow linemen on both sides of the ball. If they played six SEC, ACC, Big 12, or even Pac 10 teams, they would be demolished. Coaching can make them competitve in the sluggo Big 10, or the wimpy Big Least, but then they would get rolled again in their undeserved BCS game. John C offers an excellent opinion.

I've been a Notre Dame fan as long as I could walk (2nd in my heart only to the Cleveland Browns...yea I have a good shrink) and I am having a hard time even watching the games. The offense has never looked this flat, the defense is holding up ok against sub par teams and the coaching decisions are terrible. Weis was good as a coordinator but as a head coach he's holding back the Irish. My biggest highlight, bar the Michigan game, was when Weis got blindsided. So what I'm probably gonna get hit by a truck for saying that, it was funny.

first let me start with ole jimmy. I you ever seen any "fire in the belly" from that young lad? ND is a program with a great history but that is not winning football games. We seem to be so focused on the pass and we need a new scheme of veer and trap blocking plays to mix up the flow, and to keep defense wondering. If we could finally recruit a QB with legs, I really think that would sure help our depleted running game. Hats off to our young receivers, I have a great feeling about thier potential. Overall I see the improvement of the defensive side, however I always wonder if we could snag a 'warren sap' caliber player ( that can make the grade). We need a few studs that we can anchor consistancy and the intimidation factor. Get a hold of yourselves boys, do you not realize the significance of the uniform you are so privilaged wear. Play like a champion, indeed, not a second hand citizen. Jimmy, let me end with you, because on the field it starts with you. Be a man and fill in those shoes that you knowingly stepped into. Rah, Rah, Rah! Go Irish!
