California 34, Stanford 28. Cal running back Shane Vereen may never be mistaken for the spectacular blazer he replaced in the Bears' backfield, Jahvid Best, or the thundering Mack truck on the opposite sideline tonight, Toby Gerhart, and may never approach the broad star power of either. But Vereen shouldered as many carries against the Cardinal (42) as any back in the country has endured in any game this season, for 193 yards and three touchdowns en route to leading the Bears to their biggest win of the season over their most hated rival. At minimum, that buys him 24 hours of undisturbed sleep and at least one deep-tissue massage from a comely student trainer.

It ought to buy Cal a little more respect, too, for demonstrating more resiliency than the Bears have shown in years -- for a team with a reputation for extended collapses (2007) and random losses at the wrong time, the Bears have managed to rally this year first from back-to-back blowouts at the hands of USC and Oregon with three wins in a row, and now from another tough home loss against Oregon State (including the frightening injury that sidelined Best) to pick up back-to-back big wins over Arizona and now Stanford, breaking three-game winning streaks in both cases. That may not amount to hill of beans in this crazy mixed-up league as far as the final standings or bowl lineups go, but its a lot better than almost anyone would have guessed two weeks ago.

Vereen is just as much a blazer as Best - Vereen's 100 meter time is 0.1 seconds behind Best's. Don't sell Vereen short, he might (might) be the best running back on either team. Best has not had as big a game against as important an opponent as Vereen has had the past TWO weeks.

To be fair, the Cal OL stepped up huge in this game, and there were a few cracks that Best would've hit for home runs (like he did last year against Furd). But for the tough yards, Vereen is more stought and "fall-forward"... He came to play and deserved the Hard Hat.
Plus, Jahvid's 100m was when he was a JR in HS, and he broke his foot his SR year... I have no doubt it would be faster now.
    GO BEARS!

As always, Doc/SMQ, well said. If Jahvid goes NFL on us after this season, I highly doubt anyone will question Vereen as an "every-down" back next season. Though DeBoskie and Sofele are both studs, too.

Cal has never NOT had a good backup running back since 2002. People need to remember Marshawn backed up JJ Arrington. Justin Forsett backed up Marshawn, and Jahvid backed up Forsett. After all this, Jahvid and Vereen were recruited in the same year, with roughly the same builds, running styles, and speeds. Vereen can carry a load just like Jahvid can, its just a matter of what the defenses are looking at. Reason Jahvid has been shut down his last couple games isn't because he's worse than Vereen, its because 8 are in the box on running downs when Jahvid is on the field, not the case when Vereen is the lone back.

Usually it's Cal breaking their fan's hearts with a crushing late season loss. Nice to see Stanfurd wearing that suit this season.
How sweet it is. Take off that red shirt! GO BEARS!

Good to see the Bears led by Vereen not fold when they went down by a lot early. When it's all said and done this year they'll have 10 wins and almost the entire team coming back next year. Go Bears!!!

What a great win! How does setting up a field goal with 2:42 left in the game qualify as not risking anything. We almost lost today and should be grateful for the last minute interception.

One might do well to recall that the GPAs of the players on the Big Game Field (BOTH SIDES) have to be pretty solid.
Try that on an SEC Field. You're lucky if you can get a complete sentence, let along a coherent paragraph!
Now the Furd have to man up and DESTROY ND! And Cal must get a W vs. UW
    Go Ducks Too!
    Go Pac 10!

Everyone thought JJ Arrington was the superstar and Marshawn Lynch was the sidekick. But look how they turned out in the NFL. The same might happen to Best and Vereen.

Why put the winning drive on the back of the quarterback when you have one of the top running backs in the country especially when Andrew Luck had one of the worst games of the season, and there was plenty of time from within the 20 yard line? Jim Harbaugh has made a great team and great players from aspiring intellectual students, beating USC and Oregon this year. Today Luck was nervous from the start, but the ex-quarterback, now coach wanted I think, to create a star in Luck, with a winning drive when the young man was having trouble. Harbaugh maybe wanted to relive his past and see the QB take it down to win. Toby Gerhart had just brought it close to the twenty with an awesome second and third effort run, but never held the ball again. It won't matter, and Luck was great this year, as was the whole Stanford team, and make no mistake, Harbaugh you are it. Nice job, take us to Rose Bowl next year! Bongo Bob.

    typical SEC arrogance...
but we really shouldn't be too hard on them southerners, I mean, after all, college football is all they have left after the yankees took them behind the shed and whopped them good.
Pac-10 is always underrated thanks to the east coast bias. Whenever there's SEC upsets, they all praise the "Depth of the conference", but when there's a Pac-10 upset, all of a sudden, "Pac-10 is a conference with no superpower"
Give me a break. Better yet, give me a playoffs system and I'll prove it to you cousinf*ckers.
