Skip Holtz said after East Carolina's Conference USA Championship win over Tulsa that he's "not looking to leave" ECU, and "it would have to be a really special situation" to lure him away from Greenville. Winning a conference championship at East Carolina is almost like winning one at Buffalo; the Pirates were 3-20 the two years before Holtz's arrival. Syracuse, with no particular recruiting profile and a 3-25 Big East record the last four years, might be "special" in some sense, but probably not the one Holtz is referring to here.

As of this morning, though, the locals seem confident Holtz will be wearing Orange by early next week:

A broadcast report maintains East Carolina's Skip Holtz is heading to Syracuse to become the new coach of the Orange football team.

The Post-Standard's Donnie Webb indicates The NFL Network is reporting Skip Holtz will be named Syracuse University's football coach on Monday.

This is not a lock, but as rumors go, this one is pretty good, both in source and circumstance. Holtz will be in New York for schmoozing at his dad's Hall of Fame induction, along with Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross, who'll be there for former 'Cuse quarterback Don McPherson's ceremony, though East Carolina AD Terry Holland insists there will be no interviews. "Talks," maybe but nothing around or a table or anything. Of course, Holland also said last week he would "wrap both hands around [Holtz's] throat and throttle him until he agrees to coach at East Carolina for the rest of his life," so Skip may not be telling him everything here. Stay tuned.

Sorrycuse is not a step up. Hard place to recruit. BCS is one thing but career killer is another. Why would you have an offer on the table with no interview. wish I could get a job like that without having to interview.

Why would Syracuse want Skip Holtz instead of Turner Gill? I know Holtz has had some moderate success at UConn and ECU, but Gill won at Buffalo for christs sake. Buffalo who was a low end FCS team a little less than a decade ago, and was seen as the one easy win for all the MAC teams when they joined the league.

BCS conference team, only a decade removed from one of the greatest collections of offensive talent ever assembled in college football, a Heisman winner, won a national championship (albeit in the 50s), consistent top-25 team until the late coach P/GRob collapse... yes, Syracuse is a much better job than sitting at the #5 school in North Carolina (you might have better football than Duke and NC State for now, but that won't last if Cutcliffe sticks around at Duke).
But I agree that Turner Gill would be a better choice. Randy Edsall would be the best choice, but it looks like he's not leaving UConn for his alma mater.

To answer #1: Syracuse is most definitely a step up. You compete with Penn State and Rutgers for the entire northeast recruiting corridor, with some poaching from the Big 10. High-end facilities, and fans that (used to) care (and could care again).

I was in Syracuse earlier today. Local tv stations were reporting that Holtz is denying all rumors that he is headed to the Dome.

2 WORDS. NOTRE DAME. END STORY. Who wants to go to a losing program with no support from fans, an incompetent athletic director, and chancellor that could care less? Yeah, real easy program to turn around. And you think its the money? ND would prob give him closer to 3-4 million in a year. Keep dreaming.
