Alabama 22, Ole Miss 3. The most frightening (and probably most overlooked) aspect of Alabama's unchallenged run to 5-0 was its suddenly high-octane offense -- the Tide came in ranked in the top 10 in total yards and scoring, with as much success against Virginia Tech and Arkansas as against the Sun Belt fodder and a penchant for big plays we haven't seen from a 'Bama offense in ages. And we certainly didn't see it today: Greg McElroy completed fewer than half of his passes, didn't hit a throw for longer than 15 yards and didn't find the end zone.

Still, the Tide cruised to another routine thumper against an overmatched upstart, an appropriate reminder that this team is still first and foremost about a) Smothering defense that always seems to be in the right place, and arrives with menace; and b) Wearing defenses down with a solid, consistent ground game featuring a couple Brinks trucks in the backfield. You could add "making field goals" -- Leigh Tiffin was 5-of-5 when the offense stalled in Rebel territory -- but the blueprint would have been sufficient today even he'd missed all five. Per its head coach, this team is a cold, consistent, mercenary machine on all fronts.

So two questions remain. The first: Does Ole Miss have any offense at all? You can't realistically expect much against a brick wall like Alabama, but the Rebels now have a grand total of one touchdown and 13 points in two nationally-televised games against 'Bama and South Carolina, and Jevan Snead's three touchdowns at Vanderbilt last week were accompanied by three interceptions in a defensively-driven win. They have one week now to get something rolling against UAB, or face the prospect of the season really spiraling out of control against the fast-paced spreads of Arkansas and Auburn to close out the month. The conclusions from the Thursday night flop against the Gamecocks seem to be confirmed: On offense, at least, the Rebels are very, very average, and that may be a generous assessment after watching them flail through a wretched first half today.

And the second: Is holding the passing game in check enough to beat the Tide? I focus on the passing attack because no other aspect of their game has been as muted at any point this year as the passing game was today -- no one yet has broken through against the defense, no one has really stopped Mark Ingram and/or Trent Richardson on the ground -- and it still didn't matter. Teams driven by the defense and running game are destined for some close calls; at some point this year, 'Bama really is going to need Tiffin to drive home the game-winner in a tight game. But based on their consistent dominance throughout the first half of the schedule, I'll be damned if I have an idea right now how anyone on the second half is going to push the Tide to that point.

things have unfolded just as i thought they would this season for ole miss. talking about over analyzing a team's potential during the off season... I was amazed at how much praise they received. bring all the "weapons" back u want but they could never replace Oher. Call it premonition or call it being a hog fan, but I knew their pre-season hype was overblown.

The only reason the passing attack was stifled was because someone on that Bama sideline made it a point to try and force the ball to Julio Jones. It's very unlike McElroy to force the ball THAT many times to a well covered receiver. I think there was pressure on McElroy to get Julio the ball, and that's why the passing game looked pretty bad. The Rebel defense did a good job in their own right as they fought tooth and nail the whole 60 minutes, but I think forced passes to Julio were the biggest problems. I don't care if Julio Jones is an outstanding wide receiver. He is not the offense and it really detracts attention from other receivers and makes them become subpar like they were last year. As we've seen in the NFL, receivers have big egos and sometimes, you gotta stroke those egos to get production. That's what I saw out of the game, anyway.

i would like to see bama play somebody for a change instead of that cheesecake schedule and conference that they are in. the sec is weak and they got a quality win over Va Tech, but common the acc is a joke and has been for years. get out of you shell bama grow some nuts and play a texas or oklahoma, maybe even texas tech. get some action against a quality opponent and maybe next time you will not get blown out by a utah in a bowl game. the bama program is a JOKE! they will lose to florida and get a chance at another bcs bowl game and get blown out again, i can't wait.

guess you don't want to bring up that BYU loss, that tech loss to a OVER - RATED ole miss team, or that Texas narrowly escaped losing to Ohio State in that BCS game last year. oh yeah by the way go back, & look @ how many defending national champion's, or how many eventual national champion's my hog's play every year. we have played every national championship winner for the last 3, if not the last 4 year's (albeit by deafult of conference schedule sometime's). USC, TEXAS, LSU (EVERY YEAR, ask mack brown if he want's to mess up his gravy train of just having to beat Oklahomo, & play another comparable team to the sooner's on the schedule), ALABAMA, FLORIDA, + A 10 YEAR CONTRACT VS. A&M. i don't know that any coach would really "want" to have face everyone that we have had to on a year in year out basis (and on top of it scheduling USC, TEXAS, & NOW A&M FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS). we have obviously got the short end of the stick on most of those game's, but it hasn't stopped us from stepping up to the plate. you should also go back, & look @ your history. go back to 91 -92, & see that TEXAS, & ARKANSAS, were going to leave the SWC together to go to the SEC. w/out Texas in the BIG 12 the whole conference would fall apart. RECRUIT'S WHO DON'T GET THE TEXAS SCHOLARSHIP STILL GET TO STAY IN TEXAS, GO TO A&M, BAYLOR, OR TECH. half of your game's are in the state of TEXAS. the red river shootout is basically a home game for TEXAS (ON NEUTRAL GROUND IN THE STATE OF TEXAS ?) ARKANSAS HAS TO "FLY" TO FLORIDA THIS WEEK "FLY TO FLORIDA" . TEXAS GET'S THE SAME # OF HOME GAME'S AS ANYBODY ELSE, & THE REST ARE ALMOST ALL IN TEXAS ? is it me? am i wrong ? and about your "quality action" i would say OKLAHOMO has gotten all they've wanted. and as for TEXAS (WELL GUESS YOU DON'T WANT TO BRING UP THAT QUALITY ACTION SCHEDULE). in closing conference game's are where the action is (IN ANY CONFERENCE I.E. USC) that's where almost no game is a given (i.e. TECH BEATING TEXAS LAST YEAR). you settle up supremacy in the BIG DANCE. i would be careful about running my mouth this early also. this could all come down to a TEXAS - ALABAMA (JUST FOR EXAMPLE) CHAMIONSHIP. i wouldn't really want to play FLORIDA (WE HAVE TOO), OR VA TECH if i were TEXAS, OR OKLAHOMA RIGHT NOW EITHER. who know's you might get your QUALITY ACTION in the not too distant future (i would hope for another BIG TEN TEAM THOUGH). WOOOOOO PIG SOOOOIE, ROLL TIDE ROLL, GEAUX TIGER'S, HODDY TOTTY, MORE COWBELL, WAR - EAGLE, WEST SIIIIIIIIIIIDE !!!!!!!!!!!

Alabama also went undefated in conference play last year- what did texas, oklahoma ,& oh yeah "maybe" tech go - ? did they go undefeated ? you said the word "maybe", you don't sound very confident w/that "maybe". "maybe" sound's like well "maybe" they might get their asses handed to em w/a nice big ribbon, & bow all giftwrapped up. "maybe" you could see our nutt's grow if they weren't on your chin.

DAMN, THAT MUST BE NICE......"MAYBE" THAT'S HOW YOU CAN STILL WIN, & DROP A SPOT IN THE POLL'S BWAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA......!!!!!!
