Purdue 26, Ohio State 18. There was a headline out of Buckeye territory Friday, "Ohio State coaches show patience with QB," that takes on a completely different complexion 24 hours later. On Friday, Terrelle Pryor could still be sold as the raw, inexperienced super recruit getting by on his immense talent while learning the finer points of the position as a sophomore on the track to superstardom; the Buckeyes were still a top-10 team with the Big Ten title and the BCS in their sights.

But after his performance today -- two interceptions, two fumbles, five sacks and fewer points on the board by his offense than any other team has managed this year against the worst scoring defense in the Big Ten -- the question on Pryor is fundamentally altered, from "When is he going to fulfill the hype?" to "Will he ever fulfill the hype?" The argument is no longer about schemes or the play-calling being "too conservative," but whether Pryor can really play at a championship level with any consistency at all. The obvious regression this season, and especially today, has left him looking much less like "The Next Vince Young" than "The Next Todd Boeckman."

Except even Boeckman, Pryor's much-maligned predecessor, never lost a game like this, to a rebuilding bottom dweller riding a month-long losing streak. It's not like Purdue was a snake in the grass or anything; the Boilermakers hadn't been blown out this year and had thrown scares into Oregon and Notre Dame, but the other losses in their five-game skid included Northern Illinois, Northwestern and Minnesota. And they'd barely scored at all in either of their last two losses to the Buckeyes, evidence of the gaping chasm in talent levels. In every way, the afternoon was Ohio State's worst nightmare, and in no more glaring way than watching the shine coming off its up-and-coming quarterback until further notice.

It also strips even more luster from the Tao of Tresselball. Through the barrage of criticism for his team's big-game failures -- six high-profile losses in a row to fellow top-10 teams -- the virtue of Jim Tressel's tenure has been that the Buckeyes never lose a game like this. Where, say, USC dominates elite competition but has also managed to drop five games to unranked opponents as a double-digit favorite in the last four years -- including two straight losses immediately following the Trojans' blockbuster wins over Ohio State the last two years -- OSU hasn't blown a game against an obviously inferior team in ages. The closest it came was a stunning home loss to Illinois in 2007, but the Illini ended that season in the Rose Bowl.

Today's loss, then, ranks easily as the worst of Tressel's nine-year tenure. No other really comes close: If not the worst overall team in the Big Ten, Purdue was arguably the worst defense, at least, and Ohio State's offense did nothing until a frantic comeback at the end of the fourth quarter made the score look somewhat close. It wasn't, and for the first time since 2004, Ohio State is obviously not an untouchable power in the conference. It's just another middling offense hoping to grind out enough yards and limit mistakes enough to give the defense a chance to win it.

I agree. Pryor sucks royally. OSU needs to decide if he is a drop back passer or option. Tressel needs to hire an Offensive Coordinator immediatley. He is way tooo conservative. The people I feel sorry for is the defense.

The Buckeye Faithful can't claim bad officiating caused this defeat. While there were some...erm, questionable calls, this game was lost by the Buckeye Offence. This crew's performance doesn't deserve a nice, diplomatic Tresselspeak disection, but a Jim Mora-esque 'they suck... couldn't get a first down, couldn't get a touchdown' level of diatribe. Smalls was dropping punts, Pryor couldn't hang onto the ball, and Offensive Line was about as much of a threat as a pack of toy poodles. Being a long time fan, I am used to seeing Cooper-esque meltdowns on national television when there was actually something on the line, but this was truely pathetic. The Buckeye Defense did what it could, but they cannot hide the fact that the Offence is less a 'work in progress' and more a used Chevette trying not to fall apart. Yeah, bench Pryor and the entire First String Offence.

This is an example of a kid being handed a job without having to compete for it. Had he earned the starting job maybe things would be different. I fear that he will never turn into the player I wanted him to be and the Bucks are gonna struggle because of it. Reminds me of when Zwick was supposed to be the next big thing and it took Tressel forever to bench him in favor of Troy Smith. Maybe Guiton can be the next Troy?

I agree with number 10, and also don't believe that Terelle Pryor will ever live up to the hype. Hes got talent, but I just don't know. I think he will never be as great as people think he will be or could be.

I don't want to gloat over OSU's loss to Purdue, but they need a lot more wakeup calls like this. Even after USC, even after Wisconsin that may have been one of OSU's worst offensive showings ever, even after this game, I doubt they'll do anything about the offense, the video operator turned quarter back coach, the relatives and friends on the coaching staff, the refusal to change. And good for Purdue, they needed a little redemption for a bad season. Just in time for the BCS rankings that'll be out soon, and I hope OSU drops back to #20 or better yet, off the radar altogether, to a ranking that's more in line with their 108th in the nation passing game. Did you see some of the passes? Not even rubber man with 20' arms could have caught some of those lunkers. Purdue lost their last 5 games this year, they have one of the worst defensive rankings, and everyone that played Purdue this year, whether they won or lost, produced more points on offense against Purdue than OSU did today. So much for Tressel's philosophy of not putting the defense in a bad position. So much for the endless fan boy club excuses. What kind of excuses do we need to make now - Purdue is a lot tougher than anyone realizes, Purdue is actually a very potent team and is so great, if it wasn't for the turnovers, OSU just had an off game, we'll bouce right back, it's only one game... Even if they find a replacement for Tressel, like some other folks have said, "they'll replace him with someone that's spent their entire career smelling Woody Hayes farts. Broadcast what you're going to do and then run it up the middle, run it up the middle, run it up the middle, punt! They'll never learn and the cycle will start all over again."

This happened in preseason. when it was widely publicized that Pryor had run an unbelievable 40 time. I realized, as a Ohio state fan, that we were doomed. He's not a QB and never will be. In HS, he was bigger, faster and stronger than everyone and put up freakish numbers. In college, he's not good at all because he has never worked on QB skills. Too bad Troy smith wasn't 6'6". Ohio state needs to put in someone else at QB. Maybe he could change positions. He's not a QB.

Very distraut on how the offense played. You would think playing a team that was 1-5 and 0 fer in the conference The offense would come out and push them around....instead they became a push over and made Purdue look like unbeatable team. I feel Pryor has a lot of maturing to do and needs to let the game develope before going into panic mode. 5 turnovers is unacceptable especially from a team since USC game was solid and making good strides. I'm a die hard Buckeye fan, but the o-line needs to get tougher and the play calling needs to ge more creative.

Purdue's not a great team by any means, but when they can sometimes hold onto the ball, they are not a horrible one. Pryor was less than impressive to this Purdue fan though ... it seemed his only option for passes over 20 yards was the high wobbler.
