Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

A weekly look at conquered favorites and other notables picking up the pieces of shattered ambition.

There are no answers. But we'll fire that one coach anyway. There's not much left to dissect about the agony in Michigan. Ann Arbor is beyond disillusion. The Wolverines scored 42 points against Purdue, easily their best offensive game of this historically wretched season, and that still wasn't enough to beat a first-time starting quarterback who'd spent most of the year at running back, and who's not even guaranteed to start next Saturday for a hopeless team under a lame duck coach who has no incentive whatsoever to return to senior Curtis Painter. That is, even Purdue doesn't think Justin Siller's that good, but the redshirt freshman completely shredded Michigan for the Wolverines' fifth loss in a row. So even if it's too late to do anything about hiring Rich Rodriguez, defensive coordinator Scott Shafer has no such security:

Here is what I know: Rich Rodriguez is not going anywhere, even if Michigan loses its final three games by 50 points each. He will be back for 2009 ... and 2010 ... and probably beyond.

Here is what I think: A team like Michigan, with all its pride and history, cannot go 3-9 or 2-10 and have everything stay the same.

And, with that said, there is an obvious candidate to be scapegoated - and it's Scott Shafer.

Commence scapegoating! The usually patient MGoBlog's progressive frustration with Shafer has boiled over into the closest Brian Cook will come to saying, "Fire the bum!" -- "... the inbox is filled with emails asking whether Shafer needs to go. [...] I can no longer say so for certain" -- and Maize 'n Brew puts the loss 'squarely on Shafer's shoulders' (in context, "a less effective Ron English" is the insult of the week).

Maybe they can bring in a JUCO coach until the younger guys come around. The Wildcat Web sites are all but done with Ron Prince after Kansas State's fourth loss in five games -- and the third of those four in which KSU's defense gave up at least 31 points in the first half en route to 50-plus for the game -- at Kansas, but Jason Whitlock says a new coach won't solve much bigger problems in Manhattan. And the big man's not afraid to name names:

There’s a crisis of leadership at Kansas State. I could see it most clearly when I reached the K-State sideline early in the fourth quarter. Back over my left shoulder were Kansas’ beautiful, brand-new practice facilities. Ahead and off to my left were Mark Mangino’s new offices and football complex. All around me was a stadium packed with excited Kansas fans.
[...]
[KSU president Jon] Wefald is on a farewell tour; he’s retiring at the end of the school year. No one I know can understand why [AD Bob] Krause was tabbed to lead the athletics department.

Why would TCU’s Gary Patterson take the K-State job? Wisconsin’s Brett Bielema has a right to feel insulted that his name is even being gossiped about.

Many K-State fans want Prince fired. Who is going to hire his successor? And who would be foolish enough to apply for the job given the current leadership void?

Whitlock insists he's no Prince apologist, but he's not exactly easy on the players, either: gargantuan scout favorite Josh Freeman has turned the ball over 13 times in three games against the Jayhawks, including a goal line fumble Saturday that "defies reason or explanation"; Freeman's supporting cast is "midmajor"; and his "tiny receivers" can't catch. The outrageously JUCO-heavy recruiting class has been a bust, With Freeman eligible for the draft after this season, the writing is on the wall:

Again, the problem is there are no good solutions for 2009. Without a president in place, a legitimate athletic director and a concrete plan, no promising, intelligent coach would take the K-State job.
[...]
The more prudent move might be to do nothing for one year, install a school president, develop a serious game plan for improvement and forbid Prince from recruiting more than two or three jucos this offseason.

Let me repeat: I am not pleading for Ron Prince’s job. Sometimes you have to swallow your medicine and absorb the beating you earned. If you rush in with a quick-fix solution, you might prolong the beating.

Ron Prince in '09: Because it could get even worse! But only barely!

Optimism abounds. Bo Pelini says it's no time to overreact, so Corn Nation decided to look on the bright side of Nebraska's 62-28 loss at Oklahoma:

After giving them 28 points ... we played fairly well.

Yes, after the Huskers spotted the Sooners a four-touchdown lead less than six minutes into the game by committing three turnovers in their first five offensive snaps, they did alright. Only got outscored 34-28 the rest of the way, in fact, though not even most of the press on hand in Norman noticed: they were too busy watching Texas and Texas Tech. Maybe they'll also fail to notice that Nebraska's 5-4 and might need to win two of its last three against Kansas, Kansas State and Colorado to avoid missing a bowl for the second year in a row.

Elsewhere in Disillusion: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Mark Bradley compiles all the times he was wrong about Georgia. ... Texas still sees a light at the end of the BCS tunnel. ... And Wisconsin's athletic department is giving away tickets to the season finale against Cal-Poly following the Badgers' fifth loss in six games.

    aaah, life is good.
Morgantown is entertaining hopes of a New Year's Day Bowl - AGAIN. And RichRod is being hung from the rafters @ Ann Arbor.

Nebraska doesn't need to win twice. There's no way the Big 12 will have more than 9 eligible teams, they have 8 tie-ins, plus they'll get an extra BCS team. And anyway, either K-State or Colorado will be 6-6, and Nebraska would be picked over them in all likelihood.

RichRod is showing the same coaching savvy that he did against Pitt last year. Where is that rock solid UM defense?

Hahahaha.... ah hell. I'd had my fair share of beer, and I was trying my best to come up with something positive as to protect the lives of my wife and children.
Kansas State and Colorado are both more lost than we are, and two out of those three are at home. I like our chances (I say, trying to convince myself some more).

I go to Michigan and could not be happier at watching everyone suffer. The absolute arrogance of Michigan people is absurd. They still think they are a premier team; they aren't even Big Ten premier. Ohio State, Penn State, and Michigan State have all passed them bye. Michigan is getting what it deserves for getting rid of a classy guy like Lloyd Carr for the money grubbing whore that is Rich Rodriguez. Watching this go done makes me want to quote Paul McCartney, "Good day sunshine, good day sunshine!"
Go Buckeyes, Spartans, and Fighting Irish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RichRod thought that he could rejuvenate a moribund program at "Big Blue" with his spread offence (ex WVA). Didn't work/won't work. MIchigan is a run-then-pass offence (much like Ohio State). Lloyd Carr didn't have a very good quarterback his last two years - so he got the "boot". RichRod has the left-overs of the Carr years. My opinion: Get back to Big 10 football, good offence, good defence. Another Tom Brady, Jim Harbough long ball accurate passer - none of this run-draw crap and good running backs, wide receivers. Gonna take time - but - get away from this spread crap.

Grow up. You don't deserve to be associated w/ Uof M for spewing ignorant nonsense online. Anyone who has loved or loves this University would never root for OSU. If you haven't failed you classes yet, drop out now. You are the real loser here.

Agree with Blueboy. I mean, if you don't like Michigan, transfer like Justin Boren did. Stop being a traitor, and, by all means, don't let a school you put down be the reason you graduate with more prestige, get a better job and make more money than graduates of most other schools in this nation do. You're right, it's incomprehensible to look at the team and school as separate. I learned that the hard way when I went on job interviews as a student at Michigan. You can't dissociate yourself from that football team, so, like I said--if you can't handle that, transfer. And please, if you remain at Michigan, grow some Michigan class and intelligence, i.e. stop all that cursing, bad grammar, acting like a psycho when people don't agree with you, etc.

And, look, everybody else, Shafer is not the problem. I know everyone wants to blame somebody, as if that helps. But Shafer's presence can't totally be the difference when you think about the fact that you have 8 returning starters on defense and they all generally played better before than they are playing this year. I'm telling you, it's the mentality of those boys. They come to the media and say this and that about being motivated, but when you see their weakness on the field it's clear they're not. I bet you they don't like Rodriguez and maybe even others on the staff. These are not the people they came to Michigan to play for, plus some are seniors and on their way out. So do you really think they care?

I agree with post 9, it's not michigan football. They hired the wrong coach, the spread offense doesn't work cause michigan don't have the atheletes let alone in the conference.

Pateince Michaigan fans. It takes more than a season or two to rebuild a decayed football program. As for you Mountaineer fans, enjoy the little sucess you have left, because Michigan will be back in three years, and you will be vying for mediocrity in the Big East.

I feel bad for Michigan fans. Their undergrad is no longer ranked in the top 25, despite heroic efforts like offering classes called "How to be gay". With that gone, they want so desperately to latch on to the next best thing; their trusty football program. Now with that on the gallows, brows are sweaty and palms grow cold for Michigan Alumni as the curtain of reality finally reveals itself:
The University of Michigan is an average big 10 school with a below average football team and a far below average campus.

    Vanderpol,
The only way Michigan Football comes back in 3 years is with recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. The spread offense is about athletes from the O-Line on down! In the end it all comes down to missing out on Terrelle Pryor, now I'm not saying the Wolverines would be contending for a BCS Bowl Bid this year but I'm pretty positive in an 8-4/ 9-3 finish and a decent bowl say the Outback or Capital One Bowl if he had sign with the Maize and Blue.

    Howdy do do do!
Michigan fan living at Atlanta Ga!
What does the spread offence to do with the returning A-1 defence, the strength of this years team? They cannot takle in the open or closed field, they cannot put a rush on the opposing quarterback, they cannot get off of the lines blocks, they cannot plug up holes in the line, ect ect ect!
Ok the offence takes a while to jell, the defence had already jelled however with very poor leadership they fell, are falling, and will continue to make a fool of themselves and their so called leaders!
    How do you spell leadership?
    ziggies hear!

#8, first, Ohio St. runs a spread offenSe. Second, Carr didn't have a good QB? Umm, what about that guy Henne who will be the starter for the Miami Dolphins in a year or so? I think what you were trying to say is Rodriguez refuses to adjust his style of offense to suit the type of talent he has?
I hate Michigan. Loathe them (hello from Columbus). But I desperately want them to return to national prominence and soon. If Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin can get back to where they were a year ago, the Big Ten would be a respected conference again instead of just Ohio State and (this year) Penn St.

Its impossible to have any sympathy for Michigan or for its coach. Rodriquez had just gotten a big raise at West Virgiinia and then tried every dirty trick in the book to screw them out of the $3 million in his contract for leaving when he signed with Michigan as soon as possible. His self centererd and sick opinon of himself and his own self importance cauught up with him as it should.
Thank God 'Bama didn't wind up with this peice of crap for whateverr the reason. May the consequences of his actions continue.

Chris T , I agree with you 100%. Rich Rod is having a decent class shaping up for 2009. It would be better if the DT from Cass decides to recommit. He will have the type of quarterback he needs for the offense to succeed (Forcier, or Beaver). He will also have some of these freshman that are playing extensively in better position to succeed, with the amount of experience they have acquired this year, However, having a true freshman at qb next year doesn't translate to a 500 season next year. Even a great qb prospect like Prior has taken sum lumps in playing as a true freshman. Basically, Michigan fans will have to expect more of the same next year. All the UM haters will have plenty of ammo until 2010. Haters have fun while it lasts!
