Late November is the time that tries embattled coaches' souls, and the evidence is mounting that Charlie Weis' soul is finished at Notre Dame as the Irish stagger to another relatively mediocre finish outside of the polls: Off three losses in the last four games, athletic director Jack Swarbrick has shrugged off Weis' staggering buyout, the Chicago and South Bend tribunes called for Weis' head on the same day and the university plane was taken off the radar for would-be interview trackers online. As hints go, that's about as subtle as a jackhammer

The odds are so overwhelmingly in favor of Weis' ouster at this point, the online oddsmakers at Bodog.com have officially opened the wagering on Weis' replacement for 2010. One guess at the name with the best odds. Go on, take a shot in the dark.

Who will be the coach of Notre Dame Football for Week 1 of the 2010 Season if it is not Charlie Weis?
Urban Meyer: 3/2
Brian Kelly: 3/2
Jim Harbaugh: 3/1
Chip Kelly: 5/1
Kirk Ferentz: 10/1
Bob Stoops: 20/1
Jon Gruden: 30/1

Brian Kelly remains your man, but no matter how vigorously he protests and proclaims his love for Florida, obviously Urban Meyer's headstone is going to read, "He really wanted to be at Notre Dame." I like those odds on Jon Gruden as a sleeper, too.

And Bob Stoops, for the record, still has no idea what you're talking about.

I like the idea of Brian Kelly, as do many ND fans. There is however fear of skeletons in closet, plus what kind of standards do you think they really have at Cincinnati. I'm pretty sure I could have matriculated to that university after the 8th grade and graduated in 3 years.
Beano thinks it's Pat Fitzgerald. Methinks he's awfully young to coach Notre Dame du Lac.
Urban is like that bird you don't think you can pull, but your boy is telling you, "you don't know how money you are." Yeah, ND. You don't know how money you are! Go get him.

Man, you gotta take those odds on Stoops. I dunno why Meyer would be so high relative to Stoops, considering Bob's stammering non-denials and the Sun-Times article.

Also the first poster is posting from unsubstantiated messageboard nonsense that has since been debunked, at least by people with better sources. Brian Kelly has no skeletons in the closet. There was a nasty malicious rumor about him that has been debunked. And the only way Pat Fitzgerald gets into ND stadium is with a ticket.

I like Kelly obviously Meyer is the #1 choice but they're gonna have to throw some bucks at him. Stoops would be OK. And I think after Ty Willingham I don't know if they will go after another Stanford Coach

Hey PaulT, the last time Pat Fitzgerald was in Notre Dame stadium, he was kickin' tail and taking names ... ask Ron Powlus if he still has nightmares about the 'Cats D sacking him 6 times, and Fitz had 2 of them ... typical revisionist ND history!

I was in Florida this past week. I heard Myer say something that tipped his hand to me. That hes staying in Florida for the foreseeable future. He was talking about not having to travel more than 500 miles to recruit the best players in the country. That he could go and be back to his family that night and that there was no other place that afforded him that.
As a Bama fan. Id love to see Urban Myer out of Florida. I think the day will come that he wears blue and gold. I think it will be when his children are out of the house.

#6, I was actually a kid growing up in Evanston in 1995, so believe me when I say I love the football program there and respect Pat Fitzgerald, at least as a player. But facts are facts. Maybe in ten years he'd be a viable candidate for the job. We'll see. I'll also say that I didn't like (ND nation in general didn't like) his recent unprovoked nonsense about how "ND and Stanford say they can do it, but we actually win every year, and they don't." Which is hilarious considering the last ten years have been ND's worst, and NW's best, and ND still has a better record. Fitz needs to keep his mouth shut and coach his own team.

But the shoe didn't fit. That's the whole point. He claimed Northwestern had been winning year in year out over the past decade despite academic restrictions, while Stanford and ND hadn't. Which a glance at the teams' respective records over that span would tell you is a lie. He is a liar.

If ND oust Weis the only coach they should pursue is Harbaugh. Meyer is not leaving Florida and Kelly is trying to get some upgrades to there stadium and facilities at Cincinatti so he'll use them for leverage and Gruden is not as college coach.

Who wants to go to ND and play Navy and Stanford and Washington St.? How freaking boring for a coach that must be to just play one good team, USC, every year? ND's time is over. I'm sure Meyer wants to coach a team that gets it's butt kicked on a regular basis by crappy teams! I'm sure all coaches would rather play LSU, Tenn. Alabama, Oklahoma, Miami, and Texas! Get Real! Go Gators!

@20. Thats precisely the reason a good coach would want to go to ND Trade in a SEC schedule, to play ND cotton soft schedule. A coach has to be thinking he can go undefeated every couple yrs, and have a 1-2 loss team every yr. Whether or not they deserve it, undefeated ND goes to the Natty Champ game, a 1 loss team prolly does too. And with their schedule, where else would it be easier to get to that record?

In other words, I am a coach, and I play a schedule softer than a Mountain West team, yet if I go undefeated I am guaranteed championship game, 1 loss good chance at it. I field a decent team I go to a BCS game every year.

    Matt,
For the hundredth time, let's go over this again.
When was the last time Notre Dame reeled in a hot, high-profile coach?
Charlie Weis was a second choice, an NFL coordinator with little college experience other than a few years at South Carolina.
Ty Willingham only got the gig after the Domers' initial hire (George O'Leary, who was probably more of an A- choice than an A choice) flamed out after lying on his resume.
Bob Davie was an assistant to Lou Holtz who got promoted when Holtz left.
Holtz himself came off a coupe of scandal-ridden years at Minnesota and had been fired by Arkansas. He was certainly something of a retread.
    Gerry Faust? Enough said.
You'd probably have to go back to Dan Devine, who left the Green Bay Packers to take the Notre Dame job, to find a big-time, high-profile coach who left a plum job to go to South Bend.
So this idea that Urban Meyer would leave Florida, where he can compete for a national title year in and year out with considerably less stress is insane. I'm not even convinced that Brian Kelly - especially if there are other options on the table (re: Michigan) - would do it. Gruden is a possibilty, if only because I think being the Notre Dame head coach would be something that would stroke his ego, but I think he actually likes his ESPN gig.
I think the way this will play out is as follows:
    1. Urban Meyer makes his big "thanks but no thanks" speech saying he's not interested.
    2. Brian Kelly interviews, but ultimately does a Greg Schiano and backs out to stay in the Big East.
    3. Jim Harbaugh spurns Notre Dame for an NFL job.
Notre Dame finally ends up getting some like Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern, who everyone lauds as a "great, sleeper hire" (ala Willingham), and goes 9-3 his first year to make people think that the Irish are back. By year four, Notre Dame is 6-6 and everyone is calling for his head, too, and the cycle continues again.
