Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

Before last week, this is one of the last times Greg Paulus wore a helmet and pads, as a senior for Christian Brothers Academy a couple days after Thanksgiving 2004:

Yeah, I know, nobody on the white team covered anybody, but still: His team dominated and Paulus was Gatorade's high school player of the year for the entire country, at which point he told interested football programs to take a hike. But either he hasn't lost that touch after four years of focusing on basketball at Duke, or Syracuse is really desperate to find the slightest hint of a spark in its wasteland of an offense, because, after a full week of practice, Paulus is the Orange's new starting quarterback. He has two-and-a-half weeks with the first team to prep for the opener with Minnesota.

So yeah ... Ryan Nassib ... sorry, dude. But you saw the writing on the wall, right? When faced with a choice between a lightly recruited, no-name redshirt freshman whose emergence in the spring caught even the most devoted fans off-guard and a once highly recruited fifth-year senior who comes with a name, a list of jilted suitors, an accompanying media barrage and a loudly ticking clock on his eligibility, it was a no-brainer, really:

If Nassib were named the starter, he could go out on September 5 and fire five touchdowns vs Minnesota and everyone in the building and watching at home would have wondered if Paulus would have thrown six.

Starting Paulus answers the question once and for all. If it doesn't work out, Nassib gets to take the baton and enter the conquering hero and get the chance to prove he is the QB of the future at Syracuse.

That's a little presumptuous, of course: Nobody's going to be watching Syracuse and Minnesota from home, except maybe a few drunk Minnesota fans. But it is true that Nassib has three more years to play after serving as Paulus' insurance policy; the "Floppy" Experience is here, now, for the upcoming 12 games only. Get your formerly ironic t-shirts while supplies last, and while optimism still rules the day.

not of duke point caliber but great athlete and would have been better as a back up guard but oh well.

He can still play but it's tough to throw when you're running for your life constantly. The Orange just don't have the horses to support him.

Syracuse might as well have recruited the Ryan Miller kid from SC. The trumpet player, not the football player.

What were these worst decisions? please note the time and what was so terrible, and while youre at it what are your credentials and who do you recruit for since you know what you're talking about.

I only watched the first few plays, but his very first pass across the field should have been picked off. His TD pass did not seem to have enough zip on it to get past a D-I caliber corner, and the throw down the left sideline was underthrown and to the wrong shoulder. You can get away with such things when you are playing small high schools in upstate NY, but that wouldn't work against a Georgia AAAAA playoff opponent, let alone a college defense.

Why do you think Coach Marrone is riding the offensive line so hard ? He knows he has a stud quarterback and its up to the line to give him time to show his magic .

Love him or hate him...only time will tell if he's the real deal. Considering the academic and atheletic achievements this kid has already made, I think it's very inspiring to have him back home and trying to make history. At the very least, the guy is a great role model for the kids. How many people can say they were the #1 high school QB in the nation and didn't play football...instead got a BS and certification from Duke AND played on the basketball team for 4 years (and went to the big dance all 4 years, helped win conference titles, was captain for 2 years)? Then, he has the opportunity to get a masters degree from the # 1 communications school in the nation AND has one year of eligibility to dust off the pads and play football for his hometown team? Let's say it DOES work out. and he is all that he's hyped to be..then he'll likely be wooed by some NFL teams (again)...Plain and simple, the guy has every reason to be motivated and hopefully brings SU along on his ride. I don't think he came to inflate his ego...he's here to win and succeed. Good luck GP and go SU!

    Paulus has happy feet.
He doesn't set his feet when he throws. He wont' be able to get away w/ that at the D1 level. I doubt he will be able to change that habit given the limited time he has been practicing football the past 4 years. He is not the answer for Syracuse. He will not have a good year.

based on Slappys' logic, no one should be allowed to criticize George Bush unless they, too, have been elected president twice.

What does SU have to lose?! You either start a red-shirt freshman or a graduate coming off of 4 years of basketball experience at one of the major college programs in America. Throw the hometown boy in and see if he can be a hero for a year and let the red-shirt freshman mature another year. If anything Paulus has leadership ability and maturity behind him. I was not really impressed by the video, but at least the game was in the dome. Let Paulus run around and see if he can make magic happen. Good luck and I know I will be rooting for him along with all the other SU players! Go cuse!

Really, why are there so many haters on here? Can't they be glad for a guy with outstanding academic credentials and athletic ability to compete at two Div 1 schools?
