Oregon 42, California 3. It's gotta be the clothes, I guess; Oregon goes with the classy throwback threads from the '94 Rose Bowl season, and delivered the performance of a team that's on its way back there. As perilous as the season looked after the opening night catastrophe at Boise State, it looks just as bright after this. And heaven help me if there's any logical accounting for the turnaround. They just, what, woke up on the right side of the bed?

Everything today was in direct contrast to the loss in Boise and pretty much everything else in between, down to the good vibes of a home crowd that fostered the opposite of the poisonous atmosphere in the wake of LeGarrette Blount's meltdown on the blue turf. Jeremiah Masoli, the least efficient passer in the Pac-10, careened from last week's 4-of-16 debacle against Utah to a 21-of-25, three-touchdown, zero-interception work of art; the running game, a nonentity at Boise, increased its output for the third game in a row, nearly matching last year's 280-yard average on the ground; the defense battered Jahvid Best into just 55 yards rushing, well below half his season average, on a long run of 11; and enthusiastically dynamiting the swelling reservoir of doubt that had steadily accrued about the line play on both sides and (more importantly) Chip Kelly's competence as a head coach since the opening kick on Sept. 3.

Don't get suckered into anyone questioning Cal's top-10 credentials coming in; the Bears had been more than true before today to their high preseaon expectations. As I saw it, the conventional wisdom was that Cal should overcome its chronic road woes in Eugene, solidify itself as the Pac-10 frontrunner and get USC in Berkeley next week as a solid favorite to put the Trojans on the path to the Holiday Bowl. That sequence of events is completely exploded -- the Bears remain miserable away from home, and still in search of a reliable passing game that Kevin Riley (12-of-31 today) seems increasingly incapable of delivering. If anything, it's Oregon, one of the early season's looming disappointments, that suddenly looks a really viable contender to the crown -- the Ducks get the Trojans in Eugene, too, where they beat SC the last time around. If nothing else, they're back where they started the season, as a top-15/20 dark horse with all of those possibilities in front of them, and that's a long, long way from where they seemed to be this morning.

This game was an abomination Cal is a better football team, but Jeff Tedford should be embarrassed with the way the Bears played!

USC at Oregon on Halloween? At night? After a full day of tailgating?
Someone in the Pac-10 scheduling office must hate the Eugene Police Department.
    Go Ducks!

I take issue with us being told we shouldn't question Cal's top-10 credentials. This has been a recurring pattern for years now: Cal gets ranked in the top 10 and finds a way to utterly melt down partway through the season. How do you justify this much continual hype for a program that has never played in a BCS bowl game and hasn't won a conference title since 1958?

And yes, I understand that what happened years ago isn't relevant to what happens this year. But sooner or later you have to assume that coaching is a part of this recurring problem and start taking that into account, no?

Why is everyone seemed so surprised that Cal lost? Come on. Number 6 in the country? Please. No business being in the top 25. Looks like the Standford game is going to be a nail biter.

I was only a matter of time. Yes Oregon looked terrible the last three games. But the fact they were 2-1, and their DEFENSE managed to win games for them should have been a sign that this Oregon team is much better than the terrible showing at Boise St. I was only a matter of time before Masoli would get the demons out of his head. With the Ducks defense rocking it, and the offense showing life, Oregon could easily win the PAC-10.

the reason they dominated today was because their oline finally came together. they have 4 new starters, and need a couple live games before they can finally gel and play as a unit. playing their first game, AT boise state is definitely not something they needed to open up the season.
and to think...if blount was still eligible to play...this team would be scary

One game can't determine a season....Boise St loss was bad, but obviously that game could be the low point for the Ducks. Cal is a good team, so today doesn't define them either. Bottom line: Pac 10 is a tossup. As usually happens, the Pac 10 schools beat up on each other.....then everyone is surprised when they win all their bowl games.

No one should be surprised by a Cal road loss, but they were *murdered*. When was the last time a top ten team lost to an unranked team by such a large margin? Nearest I can find is, perhaps not coincidentally, another Pac-10 game: #7 UCLA 14, Arizona 52 in 2005.
