Charlie Weis has never been a particularly popular figure at Notre Dame, even when the Irish were winning in his first two seasons, and John Walters' all-access, "Dead Coach Walking" tour for AOL FanHouse -- while never condescending to suggest Weis may not be fired after Saturday's trip to Stanford -- tugs openly on the heartstrings wherever possible. It's not hard to sympathize: Weis shows up for work hours before sun-up every day, staying well into the night; he's an obsessive recruiter; he totally eschews camera-friendly artifice; he actually lost a chunk of his knee in last year's ugly sideline collision against Michigan, an injury that resulted in multiple surgeries and follows him for days each week after spending hours on his feet on game days but brought mainly fan jokes from fans, etc. Walters, a Notre Dame guy, is convincing at least that Weis isn't being bounced for a lack of old-fashioned elbow grease.

About those fat jokes, though -- whether or not the hecklers, Photoshop artists and ruthless commenters ever considered the impact on their target, the endless digs haven't exactly been rolling gracefully through the years like water off a duck's back. From the sound of it, it's more like they penetrated Weis' heart and coalesced into a dense, black, malignant amulet of bitterness that he vows to carry with him forever:

"The damage to Maura and Charlie Jr. is irreparable," says Weis, referring to the personal nature of the attacks he has been subject to for years now. "It's watching me get hammered. I'll never forgive the people who character-assassinated me without even knowing me. Those people did irreparable damage to my wife and son, and I'll never forgive them."
[...]
"They have the right to criticize the coach for being 6-5," says Weis. "They have that right. It's all the other stuff. You think I don't know that I'm fat? Duh!"

Asked if he should be gone, where would Charlie Jr. would go to college, the coach responded: "I know where he won't be going to college."

I'd like a precise statistical estimate of Weis critics since 2005 who are actually asking for forgiveness for their juvenile cruelty. Because I know I can name a few who are proudly standing by it.

I'm no kind of "insider" like Walters, who does his best in the service of a positive spin. But when the still-technically employed head coach bitterly promises that his emotionally wounded son won't be following in his footsteps at the old alma mater, it's hard to pretend this split is going to go down amicably.

Eh, fifteen years from now he'll appear at some alumni banquet and all will be forgiven. It always is.
But I'm sure he'll be a little bitter in the interim.

Charlie is gonna laugh all the way to the bank, and the drunken irish are DONE as a national power FOREVER. But not to worry, they still have the giant Jesus on the building. He wept.

aw you hurt my kids feeling when you make jokes about me. charlie when you take a public preformance based job paying millions of dollars a year you should know if you fail people are going to pick on you in public if you win other teams fans are going to pick on any weakness they can find. to listen to you whine about people making fat man jokes is even worse then last year when you made excuses for losing because the STUDENTS that play for you had to go to class during the season. your comment about you knowing where your son will not be going to school if that was a referance to notre dame the school that gave you a chance and has stood behind you through the loses and has given you millions of dollars then you have even less class then the slob apperance that you present would lead people to believe

I don't care what Charlie's BMI is, I really don't. I just remember that he called himself a "genius" and said just based upon his coaching ability Notre Dame was going to run roughshod over the rest of college football.
I don't hate Charlie, I really don't. I just appreciate hubris whenever it occurs. "Mission Accomplished", Charlie!

He was a cocky guy who coached a hated team. He had the fat jokes coming his way and should have known that from day one. But, as a Michigan fan, I was never comfortable going after his kids or family like some fans did. That is really just uncalled for.
As big of a football fan as I am, the BCS combined with the thousands of idiot college football fans who combine their inability to be clever with alcohol ruin the game for me. I don't want to consider myself a fellow fan of anyone low enough to make fun of an autistic kid. I'd rather stick to the professional game, where even the most die-hard fans are usually too well-tempered to be that much of a degenerate [profane]hole.

I'm curious, Matt: Which do you hate more, Notre Dame or Charlie Weis? The schadenfreude dripping off nearly every story you write about both coach and school is palpable, I'm just curious whether you'll hate the school any less if they have a coach who is more likable.

The last couple of times Notre Dame went on a head-coaching search, they had pie-in-the-sky ideas about getting guys like Jon Gruden or Urban Meyer or Mike Shanahan. Now people assume that a guy like Brian Kelly would jump at the job. But really? Why would he want to go to a place where the coaches are subjected to so much pressure and treated so shoddily by the administration and the fans?
Kelly has no rush to go anywhere. He might as well wait around until a better job comes around -- like Michigan, or even Boston College.

Being critical of Charlie as a coach is okay. Few know about Charlie the man who with his wife founded , built and probably finance a camp for kids with disabilities A mans family should never be included in jokes or criticisms of him r his job performance. Good Luck Charlie your rewards will be in a far better place WE ARE!!!!!!PENN STATE

I think I've been pretty charitable to Weis, considering that I've stood in person through all but one year of his reign of terror at ND without much complaint. But my god, when is this going to end? Really? Really, Charlie Weis? You're going to leave ND a multi-millionaire for doing a pretty horrible job. You nearly got Jimmy Clausen killed in 2007, and this is how it ends, huh? My sympathy for this man is completely spent.
I can't wait for this season to end so the nightmare can begin again in 2010. When this program stops treating its players, its students, and its fans like miserable, stupid suckers, wake me up.

I love how some go from "fat", then since one is fat, they must be a "slob", then since one is a slob, then he must be stupid.
Seriously, being overweight is the new "ism" in our society.

So once again, it is the coaches fault, huh? I guess the players performance week in and week out has no bearing on Notre Dame's won - loss record? And to those cretins who attack a coaches family - you need your a$$es kicked!

Here's something to think about Weis, If you don't want to hear fat jokes and insults, Then win the games you are supposed to win and stop acting like your a tough guy when your team is a joke. Mangino thinks you should lay off the potato chips and actually coach a team that can beat Navy and UConn, oh wait, you can't do that either.

I must have missed something. I didn't see Charlie fumble the dam ball on sat. It's Charlie's fault that the leading tackler on the team is the safety? Charlie gone, Jimmy gone, Golden gone , they won't have a winning team now for years.I don't know any coach(maybe high school) that will take the job. and Zero yur an idiot, Navy has the second highest rushing game in college next to Georgia Tech. Shut your pie whole before we fill it with Charlie's potato chips.

I just hope that the people making the comments about Charlie Weis are from schools other than Notre Dame. I am hoping that the Notre Dame faithful have more class and respect for themselves than to criticize the man's stature. The man is making millions sure but that goes a long with the job at a prestigous school such as Notre Dame. You weather the pressure of the job and are expected to produce. Granted Charlie's record is not the type of final product that everyone hoped or thought would happen but come on people....he is human regardless and to attack the man becasue of his weight is just classless. Again, I hope that if you are mocking the man and as a result his family....that you are not a fan of the Fighting Irish. I for one appreciate the good recruiting that he has done and hoped for more in the end as everyone that is an Irish fan did. Sorry it did not work out and am looking forward to the Brain Kelly era as well. I wish Charlie the best in his endeavours and hopes that he has a successful return to the pros. Go Irish!

I am no fan of Charlie Weis. First, even his friends admit he is an ego-maniac - and that certainly rang through at his very first ND press conference - so it was kind of satisfying to see him get his come-upin's. Second, I am a USC fan, so I dislike anyone who is handed the keys to the Irish locker room. I have a bumper sticker that says USC is my favorite team and my second favorite is whomever is playing Notre Dame that day.
That being said, I do find the fat jokes about Weis to be immature and tasteless - with an emphasis on immaturity. There is enough in his won-loss record and his declaration upon hire that his talent as an offensive genius would make ND a powerhouse to pick on without resorting to childish name calling about his physical condition and his looks. Whenever I see one of these unncessary remarks about his physical appearance I stop reading the commentary.
If you have a strong enough arguement and enough factual information to present a case against keeping Weis as head coach at ND, you don't have to embarass yourself by resorting to insults.
