The Oklahoman delivered probably the best lede of the offseason Sunday, on the preseason magazines' infatuation with Oklahoma State:

STILLWATER — If the college football media were a 12-year-old boy, Oklahoma State would be the girl he met at camp.

That's a nice analogy for summer puppy love, though I think of the Cowboys more as the new girl in school everyone falls for immediately, ignoring some fairly obvious baggage until it's too late. I picked out OSU in February as one of two teams -- along with Ole Miss, whose media bubble has been a fat, frequent target here -- destined to emerge as the hot new thing, and here we are: The Cowboys are a top-10 outfit by most estimations, top-15 at worst, on the strength of last year's near-breakthrough and the four-headed offensive monster (quarterback Zac Robinson, running back Kendall Hunter, receiver Dez Bryant and tackle Russell Okung, the last two probably regarded as the best in the country at their respective positions; not to mention Perrish Cox, a first-team All-American at kick returner according to Athlon). For a program with one top-10 finish (No. 5 in the 1945 AP poll) and not even a top-15 finish since the Thurman Thomas/Barry Sanders-powered Pokes finished 11th in 1987 and 1988, this is probably the most hyped team in school history.

Along those lines, the Oklahoman posed its central question -- "How will they handle it?" -- and attempts to apply the brakes to the runaway hype train (emphasis added):

The Pokes dealt with some national hype last season, but nothing like this. It didn’t arrive until early October, when OSU won at Missouri. From there, OSU jumped into the top 10 and drew the attention that comes with such a ranking.

But the hype never lasted more than a week at a time leading up to a big game, and faded after the blowout loss at Texas Tech.

One of the reasons the hype consistently faded is that the Cowboys didn't win any of those games: After vaulting into the national consciousness with its upset at Missouri -- which had lost almost all its luster by the end of the season as the Tigers struggled to finish 1-3 against winning teams the rest of the way, the one win coming in overtime against Northwestern -- Oklahoma State had four big games, against Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oregon, and lost them all, the last three by double digits. At least Ole Miss is backing up its unprecedented hype with a couple skins on the wall, over Florida and Texas Tech; counting Mizzou, which was No. 19 in last year's final AP poll, Mike Gundy's teams are still 1-11 against opponents that finished in the top-20 since 2005, and 0-8 against Oklahoma and Texas.

They get three teams this year expected to fit that description, Georgia, Texas and Oklahoma, with Missouri and Texas Tech coming to Stillwater as wildcards. Not even the most wildly optimistic projections are picking OSU over the Longhorns and Sooners within the South division. That leaves the opener against Georgia as the lynchpin of the season, just like it was the last time the Cowboys entered the season as a darkhorse, in 2007, and left Athens with a 35-14 spanking that dropped them permanently from the rankings. Minus first-round picks at quarterback and running back and its top receiver, this edition of the Bulldogs is ripe for the picking, and -- assuming they live up to expectations as roughly No. 15 nationally -- would be Gundy's biggest win yet as a head coach. OSU would be more or less validated (and almost certainly undefeated) through its Halloween date with Texas, also at home, which parallels the unprecedented heights achieved by last year's hot new thing in the Big 12 South, Texas Tech. If Robinson hits Bryant on a ridiculous sideline throw to beat the 'Horns at the last second, we're in the Twilight Zone. (Which is a bad omen for the finale in Norman. But you take the best season in school history however you can get it.)

But if the Cowboys fall on their face against Georgia out of the gate, at home, it's 2007 all over again: Not ready for prime time. At least they'll establish their identity for the season -- legitimate upstart or same old underdog -- right from the beginning.

Pokes may actually play some D this season, and the offensive talent may be the best all-around in school history. I am a Pokes homer, but even with some analytical distance this should be an amazing season once we get past the Dawgs.

I would not put much hype in a ranking. As for talent both teams(uga okst) have it. I just dont see ok st beating an upper tier sec team yet. No "D". UGA 27 OKST 17

Georgia is coming into Stillwater to edge out Oklahoma State. A better defense (even last year was top 20 nationally in every worthwhile category) and if healthy, the best offensive line in the country will provide ample QB protection for Joe Cox who is highly underrated, especially with his accuracy and he will be throwing to the best WR in the SEC against a mediocre at best OKST defense. I've first hand seen the workouts and determination from this year's Georgia team and would be shocked to see anything less than stellar as far as effort goes.
Also, I wouldn't want to play Georgia on the road not to mention only one non-conference regular season loss since 2001.

UGA will be the toughest D OSU will see all year, so I think this will prepare the Pokes for a strong season in the XII. However, I think they'll take one on the chin on Sept 5th. Great program, great coach, great fans.....but you'll probably be starting the season 0-1.
Hope the best for you after week 1.

Don't be so sure to say there won't be a good, if not great, defense in the Big 12 this year. The latest rags give Ou's line a #1 ranking and the LBs #2. They showed some cohesive play against FL in the nat'l champ game, and almost all are back. In 2000 when SEC had some good defenses, OU's was the best, winning all games. Stoops could have himself the D team he was known for at FL. If that holds true, we could very well see a rematch in the Rose Bowl.

The Cowboys will have a new defense this year, guaranteed. New D-Coordinator Bill Young has gone back to the basics, which should mean much few broken tackles a la Holiday Bowl. As for these score predictions being thrown out here, even OSU's defense struggles, their offense will score way more than 13 points, barring injury.

Or maybe Georgia will be last seasons Georgia.
BUST! The Florida game told me all I need to know about the UGA football program. At least OU went down swinging, Georgia just rolled belly up after the first quarter!! Nothing really against Georgia or the SEC but lets just calm down on the SEC love fest. This year Florida should run the show again as the rest of the SEC (Alabama could step up again) is not that strong. Auburn is a mess, Vandy is Vandy, Tennessee will be better, Georgia lost too much (QB and RB) to the NFL. And I'm not sold that Florida will be a lock, the loss of Harvin will be tough to overcome. I think OSU is for real, their biggest problem is that the Big 12 is stil loaded. OU, Texas, Nebraska is better, Texas Tech will still be dangerous, Colorado is better, even Baylor showed some signs of life. Should be a fun conference season for sure.

When someone says calm down with the SEC lovefest it makes me laugh. I guess as an SEC fan we will do that when someone stops that huge snowball from rolling down the hill. I mean the SEC has won the last 3 BCS title games and they were 6-2 in Bowl games last year compared to the Big 12 going 0-2 against the SEC in Bowl games and finishing 4-3. I mean you didnt even mention Ole Miss in there who beat the "dangerous" Texas Tech team last year in the Cotton Bowl. You say Baylor showed some signs of life and Vandy was just being Vandy that is a laugh. Vandy went to a bowl game and won compared to Baylor doing......well nothing. And as far as the Big 12 being loaded I am sure you are right as long as they stay in the Midwest and dont come South because they havent had a lot of luck there lately. The SEC has 3-4 teams EVERY year in the top ten in recruiting do you think the talent level has gone down?? People love OU and Texas in the Big 12, I like Texas because unlike OU they actually back up what they say. Texas wins BCS games when they show up and they have beaten OU 3 of the last 4 years so yes I respect Texas. OU beat out Texas for the right to go to the BCS title game last year and I have yet to see why!! It isnt like they got lucky in Dallas and beat OU they won the game by 10 points not a last second FG. Bob Stoops was being Bob Stoops and gambling only to fail and lose momentum in the game. And you say Colorado is better come on kid they were 5-7 (2-6 in conference). Baylor has a great QB and thats it, he gets exposed by great teams with speed you hanging your hat on that. OSU is going to lose a great game to Georgia because of UGA's defense, they have 2 of the best DT's in the country good luck running up the middle. They have speed at LB good luck running outside. They were 10-3 last year in a better conference but they get ran down in Big 12 forums lol. I love football and when the Big 12 is even with the SEC I will be the first to give them that due but it isnt there yet
