Texas 16, Oklahoma 13. So this game looked nothing like the shootout everyone expected -- one star quarterback was knocked out of the game, the other spent most of the afternoon on his back and there were three times as many fumbles as touchdowns -- except in one regard: Injuries and attrition have stripped the Sooners' prolific offense to the bone, especially on its very green offensive line, which couldn't protect Sam Bradford and couldn't establish anything on the ground to help backup Landry Jones.

That's not to say Texas' offensive line was ever in control. It's only by the twists of fate that Bradford was the quarterback who left the game instead of Colt McCoy, who survived four sacks by the Oklahoma defense and a dozen more heavy hits. For some perspective on how uncomfortable McCoy was in the pocket from beginning to end, consider his vaunted completion percentage: After setting a new national record by hitting more than 76 percent of his throws last year and connecting on a national-best 73.4 percent through his first five games this year, McCoy's 21-of-40 effort today (52.5) was his least accurate since October 2007, a span of 23 games. He was forced to get rid of the ball so quickly that the Longhorns' longest gain of the game through the air was 14 yards, on the quick slant to Marquise Goodwin for UT's only touchdown. Sixteen points on 265 total yards was the 'Horns' worst production in both categories since 2006. The battle of "Texas Offense vs. Oklahoma Defense" was clearly won by the Oklahoma defense.

But all of those same lowlights apply to the Sooner offense in its struggle against the Texas D, with a couple extra stingers: a) Bradford was knocked out, maybe for the season this time, on his second big hit of the first quarter, and b) Where the Longhorns were able to find some minimal room on the ground, OU ultimately finished with –18 yards rushing. Landry Jones was not great in Bradford's place, only leading the Sooners to the end zone once in 12 possessions and throwing a couple costly interceptions on their last two drives, but he hardly had a chance when the running game -- the one element of Oklahoma's offense that hadn't been decimated by injuries -- posed no threat whatsoever. The big question for OU coming into the season was the viability of the revamped line minus four longtime, much-feted starters who kept Bradford clean and paved the way for two 1,000-yard rushers in last year's record-smashing run to the BCS title game, and halfway through, the Sooners still have no answer up front against respectable defenses.

For such a marginal difference between two equally talented rivals in an equally hard-fought, hard-hitting and hard-fumbling game, they land in remarkably different places in the end: Texas, unimpressive as it was offensively, remains on track for the Big 12 championship and the national title game with its toughest test in the rearview; Oklahoma falls to 3-3 with a marquee win to date over Baylor, will surely fall out of the polls for the first time since 2005 and faces the second half of the season without its star quarterback and with no consistent identity on offense to replace his presence. If the Sooners have a rally in them, next week at undefeated Kansas (probably as underdogs) is the time to find it.

If Oklahoma are underdogs next week, I'm putting my entire entertainment-purposes-only budget on them.

Hard game to watch, but a Victory. 59th in the Series, 4 out of 5. This game put to rest it does not matter who is in @ RB. The Offensive Line does not seem to have the will to Dominate. Hook em. Beat the Tigers.

I'm not waiting for the FLORIDA/ARKANSAS Blog to start, the refs in this game have money on the Gators OBVIOSLY- or the NCAA heads won't allow the RAZORBACKS to take down their cash cow. Heck the game isn't even over yet , and I'm pi$$ed at alot of these calls. The ZEBES decided this game. WHAT A LOAD OF B.S.

Brent Musberger said it all when he said, "I thought Alabama had the best defense, that is until today." Oklahoma and Texas put on a defensive show. Only true Texas and OKlahoma fans can appreciate how tough the Red River rivalry is. All the win - loss records go out the window when these two teams meet. Sorry to see Bradford go down, that really sucked. Despite the low score, it was a good game and came down to the last few minutes, as it almost always does. Hook 'Em!

The critics seem to be knocking Texas for this win....ridiculous. Why don't they take into account that OU is pretty darn good, regardless of their record.
I am a Sooner fan who will be rooting for Texas to win out and beat the SEC in the title game.
This Sooner fan says...."Hook em Horns".

I bet bradford comes back for his final year, but with that being said, they and i mean the coaching staff will have to change. This conservtative playing crap has to go and with that being said ; fire coach's from the top if need be, or (HMMMMM how about that offense coordinator) but what ever you think, this is not okla football. To set your quarterback with the same play and he gets hurt, wow that is one , lets put this nicely!!!!!! (stupid)

Florida should be a 1 loss team. They can thank the refs for todays meaningless victory against an UNRANKED opponent on their HOME field.
Florida is not the best team in the country.

Did anyone read Olin Buchanan's article disrespecting Texas...Rivals is crap and so is Olin, what kind of name is Olin anyway? his picture looks like he is a retard...all Texas fans should cancel Rivals and never click on a Rivals link. Florida almost lost to Ark at home and everyone says ohh! that Tebow! he always steps up when he needs to...excuse me? Florida is overated and so is Alabama, did you see that game against S Car.? Alabama's running game will be stopped this year and they will be beaten. Remember Texas has NEVER lost to Alabama (7-0) and NEVER lost to Florida (2-0). Bring those SEC clowns on. Texas will win in Pasadena just like in 2005 when they beat the "greatest college football team ever aka USC Trojenz"!

Come on Doc. You've watched the Sooners other games this year. UT is much better than either the Canes or BYU. This was, by far, their best performance. OU's defense saved several special treats for the Horns, and they were effective. The offense, without Bradford, outgained UT by a year per snap.
I know you have to write a story, but your readers deserve better. OU 2005 was in shambles after a whipping in Dallas. This team is getting better.

Personally I thought Texas played like crap on offense, but well enough to win. The defense really stepped up and dominated ou. I'm not sorry to see bradford out either. Maybe too, if ou wasn't so busy running up the score on people last year, they could have developed some players that are starting this year. But that GIVEN trip to the title game last year must have been worth it. Oh yeah, you lost. I wish everyone would get off the Longhorns' back about a three point win. No one seems to be too upset at Florida about their three point win against unranked Arkansas. I'm tired of this SEC, Tim Tebow love fest the media has gotten themselves into. The Big 12 South produced THREE... Count 'em, ONE- Texas, TWO- ou, and THREE Texas Tech with 11-1 records last year and they were all ranked within the Top 10 when they played each other. Florida made it to the title game and they got beat my Ole Miss?!? Come on. The SEC is garbage. HOOK 'EM HORNS! Remember... THE EYES OF TEXAS ARE UPON YOU!

i hope sams golf stroke has not been ruined. the nfl is not for him. no ability to slide step even an inch. throws the best ball i've seen in a long while but will get killed with the big boys. this is not a knock on him at all. just the reality of the insane and dangerous game of football game at the pro level. look for stoops to find new faces to try at every position, including qb. who is the backup at qb? one muff on punt return and we stopped trying to field all those that followed. not good for the confidence. the return game for ou has been a surprising bright spot for the sooners all year plus much better punt and kick coverage. why play hurt players? i will never get it. demarco never looked the same after coming up lame. must have more confidence in back ups that are healthy, quick and fast even when inexperienced. chris brown, great short yardage guy, but not enough of a threat enought of the time. look for sooners to bounce back. toughest coaching job for stoops since arrival. he will rise to the occasion. bowl game, o.u. v. notre dame, somewhere.

Bradford doesn't really care about the lost NFL money and he has stated this repeatedly. So what if he only gets 25 Mill as opposed to 45 Mill? He actually has a brain and is looking at life after the NFL is over, which could be way before he even turns 30. He understands that getting a degree will set him up for life whereas the NFL is only temporary. For every Mark Sanchez success story (albeit it is still early on him) , there are numerous Ryan Leaf's out there, QBs who left early that probably shouldn't have.
Both Manning brothers stayed their full eligibility and I believe it has worked out for them, correct? Eli has a Marketing degree, Peyton finished his degree in 3 years but still came back and played for Tennessee. Not saying these guys will ever need their degree, but it was there in case they would've washed out like Akili Smith, who is glad he had his education to fall back on , right?
Fact 1: The majority of former pro players have squandered their NFL salaries, in 5 years or less, after their playing days are over.
Fact 2: The majority of former NFL players have absolutely no skill set whatsoever to obtain and sustain a prestigious and/or well paying job or career. Some have debilitating injuries, some can barely read, and some don't want to start at the bottom for a company like most of us did when we got out of college, it's beneath a guy who was given everything during his playing days.
I wouldn't be surprised if Bradford does come back and play at OU next year, but more than likely he won't, since he is on track to graduate this year. Regardless what Bradford does in the NFL, he will be a winner in life, and that's what it's all about.

What a game, give credit to the OU defensive staff for putting together a tough defense for this game. Good but just was not good enough to shut Texas down completely. In case no one noticed Texas defense was no slouch! Anyway who remembers yardage the week after the game? I hated to see Bradford injured. I still think Texas would have still won, because of last years screwing by the BCS, we were on a mission. Still have a tough road ahead.

#19, all the OU football players take easty courses, is there big money in Badminton. Please Ou is not an institution of higher learning, if it was Bradford would not have played yesterday and stoops would be fired. To say OU and diploma in the same sentence is an oxymoron. And youre just a moron

It cracks me up how most all the hack writers and sports "analysts" hate the Big 12. What is ironic is most don't even take the time to actually watch a the team games and their progression through the season. But we are to take it at face value that they are "experts." So now that VT went down, there is talk of USC, the darling of all of the NCAA to jump Texas. Texas just played it's toughest opponent, which was ranked, and pulled out the win. Florida just played Arkansas, unranked, at home, and barely beat them. Alabama got it's fill of S Carolina and did not pull away until very late in the 4th. But according to "experts", Texas' win over Oklahoma was unimpressive. Make no mistake, the Red River rivalry is one of the biggest dogfights Texas and Oklahoma play all year. Why should we expect a hack writer to understand that? After all, in most cases, aren't these the same guys who have never padded up in their life. Texas will do their speaking on the football field. And they are 6-0. They may be slow out of the gate, but they get the job done. When the "darlings" do it, coming back to win shows grit. When Texas does it, they were "lucky" to get a win. So to all the Skip Baylesses of the world, Texas will prove you wrong, AGAIN, just like in '05. And by the way, is it just me or does Skip Bayless look like a real live bobble head doll? I mean, that dude's head is huge.

Concur that discounting any victory in this series is bs. At least most of the pretenders in the top 10 are gone.
How VT and OSU were rated that high is beyond me. Glad to see them gone.
To bad for bradford, all kinds of ?? now, unfortunately not many could ever be construed as positive.
Looks like UT- Ok St could be THE game, provided O state doesn't get knocked off in route. Of course then
the pokes will get knocked off in Norman.
Be very interesting to see if you get a one loss Fla , Bama, & UT team if Boise doesn't get in. Cinncy, give me a break. Afraid UTs non conf schedule may fuuuc them again.
