One thing about the Rose Bowl: It's never been for the little guy. Even since the Granddaddy relinquished its death grip on the Big Ten and Pac-10 champions to join the BCS, only five teams have won their way into Pasadena without a conference championship, and only one of those (No. 13 Illinois in 2007) came into the game ranked lower than No. 6. The Fiesta or Sugar bowls might be willing to descend to some mid-major upstart, but never the Rose. It's just not done, you see.
More accurately, it wasn't done, says Tony Barnhart today on his Atlanta Journal-Constitution blog, until ESPN got its hands on the contract (emphasis added):
Utah, Boise State to the Rose Bowl? It could happen soon: Over the course of the week I found out that there is an interesting little nugget in the new BCS contract with ESPN, which will begin after the 2010 regular season.
In past contracts if the Rose Bowl lost one of its traditional partners, the Big Ten or Pac-10 champ, to the BCS championship game, it could simply fill with another Big Ten or Pac-10 team that qualified. That’s how a 9-3 Illinois team got to Pasadena two years ago.
But in the new contract, I’m told, there is an interesting clause: The first time in the deal that the Rose loses one of its champions to the BCS title game, that opening will be automatically filled by a Coalition (non-BCS conference) team if one has qualified.
Of course, the Worldwide Leader isn't throwing its weight around for the sake of the little guy: Barnhart suggests opening another avenue to a Mountain West or WAC upstart would be an effective counter to the "monopoly" charge if the Series gets hauled back in front of Congress. Personally, I think it's just as likely a barrier against another Illinois: The ratings for Illini's slaughter in 2007 were the lowest for a Rose Bowl in the BCS era. If the "BCS Buster" card makes people think of Utah and Boise State's triumphs over traditional behemoths -- and not, say, Hawaii's utter collapse against Georgia -- the underdog's pilgrimage to holy ground should be worth a few million more eyeballs than just another "Big Six" also-ran.

'"Wouldn't that be great to see Utah or TCU clobbered by Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl? Finally it is someone else's turn to take a USC whipping in Pasadena."
Yes just like how Oklahoma and Alabama were suppose to.

The proximity of the WAC and MWC make a good fit, for more fans from those schools to attend and help the Rose Bowl and the schools to sell tickets

I say we mix up the Rose Bowl a bit. Money would flow into California like the one in the Bible! Alabama brings in over 90,000 just for Spring games! imagine the revenue from that type of traveling crowd!
We don't have long till College Gameday my College Football Fam!!

Demetris ure a tard. There only one faster pac 10 team and thats USC and Florida Alabama Georgia or any other SEC team would get 40 put up on them against the last 5 USC teams that played in the Rose bowl.

The Bowl's only make sense when tradition is on the line as it is for the Big Ten and the Rose Bowl or the SEC and the Sugar Bowl, getting away from that has hurt the Bowls.
I am not sure if I prefer the Bowls or the playoff system, but lets get rid of the BCS!!!!!!!

Well, they did go 5-0 in their bowl games. Including a thorough beat down that Arizona dished over MWC BYU.
"I can't wait until a Boise State or Utah trounces a Trojan team in the Rose"
I suggest you find a way.
"how about they move the game to somewhere else beside where its at because it not hard for a team like usc to win at home lets see them play somewhere beside at home because they last time they played a bowl anywhere else they got beat by texas so USC is so over rated"
Firstly, the epic Texas v. USC championship game of 2005 did take place at the Rose Bowl. But yeah, I can see how a USC team with a Heisman trophy winner that year that beat four ranked teams, stomped on Hawaii in Honolulu and dropped 70 points on Arkansas would be seen as overrated just because they lost the national championship in the final minute to one of the greatest individual performances in college football history
It's easy to knock on the Rose Bowl right now. The Big Ten is going through a tough era and everyone is sick of seeing USC go there every year. I'm with you guys there. But to hear phrases like "USC is overrated" or "BSU and Utah would destroy USC" is just plain silly. Lets all just hope that USC gets to the NC because that way we can see a new team in Pasadena and Pac-10 fans can finally get a shot at the SEC.

Furthermore, the Rose exemplifies the old order of things; The old handlers that believe its the 50s and fight tooth and nail against a playoff system. Hopefully the so called barbarians will tear down the gates and help produce the unintended consequence of dragging college football into the modern world every other sport thrives in.
