Maverick Miles' secret revealed: In the clutch, he 'eats that grass'

So yeah, in between calling a crazy play and watching it executed on the field, sometimes LSU coach Les Miles likes to nibble on a little grass. What of it? It's a ritual:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — As Les Miles' latest stab at fourth-down trickery was about to unfold, the LSU coach bent down, snatched up some blades of grass — and ate them.

"I have a little tradition that humbles me as a man, that lets me know that I'm a part of the field and part of the game," Miles said as a smile widened on his face. "You should have seen some games before this. I can tell you one thing: The grass in Tiger Stadium tastes best."

Of course, it helps when the call works, as it did today when receiver DeAngelo Peterson took an end-around 23 yards to the Alabama goal line on 4th-and-1 with nine minutes to play in the fourth quarter. Stevan Ridley plunged ahead two plays later for the touchdown that put LSU ahead to stay in a 24-21 win that reestablished the Tigers among the SEC elite.

Said receiver Russell Shepard: "I see him do it every day. That's Coach Miles. He eats that grass. I guess he says it has a lot of protein." So there you go. When your gamble for a season-defining win pays off, you can feed your head with whatever you'd like.
