When last we checked in on Maurice Clarett, the ex-Ohio State star turned convicted felon had appealed to the governor of Ohio for early release on a seven-year sentence for robbery and gun charges. Clarett has been in prison since 2006 and, though his sentence extends through February 2014, a plea deal reduced his time to three-and-a-half years with good behavior. On that timeline, he could be out by the end of 2010.

It looks like Clarett will serving all of that, too, as he withdrew his request for clemency earlier this week:

Clarett had argued that the sooner he was released, the sooner he could make a comeback, possibly in the NFL. But he sent a letter Monday to the Ohio Parole Board explaining his decision to withdraw the request, Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman JoEllen Culp said Wednesday.
[...]
"It probably was a reality check by both Mr. Clarett and his lawyer that they had no chance of obtaining clemency under the circumstances," [Franklin County prosecutor Ron] O’Brien said Wednesday.

Possibly. But Clarett's original letter for early release in June reportedly mentioned becoming a motivational speaker and attempting a return in the Arena or Canadian leagues. Is it a coincidence that Clarett's withdrawal coincided with reports of the Arena League's imminent demise? Probably -- after all, there was always Canada, and bringing the Mind of Clarett to wayward souls around the greater Midwest. (Not to mention, you know, "freedom" in general.) But if for some reason Maurice had his sights set on, say, the Cleveland Gladiators, that's just one more dream down the drain. Hang in there, man.

It's said to see Clarett's life take such a drastic change from his college year, but I pray that things get better for the Buckeye!

o.k. so Bryan J. Ohio State should have its title revoked? Why, because of one bad call in an overtime that shouldn't have even gotten to overtime??? If you remember the game correctly (I have watched it in its entirety 17 times) you would see that with 3rd down and 9 and 2:37 on the clock, Ohio State completed a pass for a first down that was ruled out of bounds. Replay clearly showed that the ref blew the call. A first down allows Ohio State to coast to the title and run the clock out; no overtime necessary. So if you want to blame a bad call, rewind a bit and you will see that it was a bad call that even allowed Miami to get to OT. Finally, after the blown call on the pass interference, Miami still got the ball back and got stuffed. That great offense they were supposed to have and Ohio State stuffed them when it counted. Ohio State was the true champion that year. Miami thought they were better than they actually were.

Bad calls happen during every game...I didn't say anything about the game itself....OSU used an ineligible player (or he should have been)....he got caught getting paid (after the he left, of course) and played an integral role in that championship year....I feel the same about USC and Reggie Bush....but because these are premier - code for high revenue generating/line the NCAA's pockets - programs, the NCAA won't do a damn thing. But, they will bust a directional Louisiana school for five years because of an ineligible table tennis player...it's just not a level playing field across all schools....

If Vick deserves a second chance so does this guy! He was good in college and there really isn't any reason to think he couldn't be good again. Yeah....he didn't make the cut with the Broncos but I think the guy wasn't mentally ready. Maybe his time away has put him on the right path and like I said.......he deserves a second chance. I also think that it would be an amazing story that could inspire a lot of people if he could come back and make it. Good luck to ya!

Relal college football is at the "mid-major" level. BCS is simply an NFL minor league proving ground. Low
graduation rate, marginal character players , and big business dollars.

I saw this kid play in high school and he was a man amongst boys. I went to a coaching clinic and his then high school coach who is the father of new Bronco's coach McDaniels went on and on about what a good citizen this kid was and how great a student he was in school. Remember, Clarett graduated early so that he could start Ohio State in the Spring. Too much freedon too early for this kid and now he is incarcerated. Classic case of single mother home with no father figure and coaches loving him as long as he is of some value to them. I wonder how many times his high school coach McDaniels or for that matter Tressel has spoken with this young man since his incarceration. I hope for this young man's sake he can get his act together, but chances are he will get out and have no success and revert back to what landed him in prison. As a high school coach for many years I have seen how coaches and communities place kids on pedestals and then forget about them when their college careers don't pan out. Unfortunately, this is when these kids need support the most. I bet Clarett did a few minor things in high school that were overlooked because he was a star, and he took that feeling of being untouchable with him to college. The addition of being credited as one of the main reasons the Buckeyes won probably only fueled that feeling. I bet everyone reading this can recall a local kid from their town that was a super star but washed out when they went to college. I can name too many to mention.

If I can remember correctly Maurice didn't make the NFL because he was too young, right? I believe the rule was you have to be two years older than when you graduated from high school. I could be wrong about the two years thing but I'm pretty sure he tried to play God with his talent stick one to the NFL. Either way, he was a young man at the time who had no idea what he was getting himself into. His parents/guardians should have kicked him in the @ss and set him straight. The fact that they didn't shows me he was probably raised by greedy individuals who wanted him to take on the NFL so they could seek the rewards. Honestly, who in their right mind would allow their 18 or 19 year old son (no matter how talented he is) to take on the NFL and all it's lawyers?

Well there Teddy boy. Great way to start your comment with insults. You must be high class. For your information I have moved on. I was responding to the gentleman who brought it up again. I haven't thought about the game in years and watched it repeatedly with friends years ago in order to celebrate over and over the greatness of Ohio State. Yes they do choke in bowl games and title games. The nice part is I don't care really. I actually have a life Theodore, so I don't care that much. I enjoy watching Ohio State and usually win money on them and nobody puts out talent like the Buckeyes, nobody. I like the Sooners actually. They put out some good teams once in a while and are fun to watch. But chill out dude its just a dumb game anyway watched mainly in the U.S. Most of the world could give 2 craps about American football and believe me, 99.9% don't even know the name Maurice Clarrett. Heck, most don't know who Tom Brady is. Go Buckeyes!!!!!!
