Just to wrap up this morning's "best guess" version of the day's coaching news: Doug Marrone has officially accepted the Syracuse job and will be introduced there this afternoon; Syracuse.com, headquarters for Orange rumor over the last month, hit the archives for your official Doug Marrone photo gallery, including many shots of him as a Syracuse player in the mid-eighties, when the Orange were men.
And if there was any doubt that Thursday night's Muschamp-to-Auburn report was dead on arrival, Coach Boom! himself blows it up this morning:
"I have not interviewed for any jobs. I'm not interested in any jobs. I'm happy here, my family loves Austin and I'm going to be at Texas."
There you go. And Army, for some reason, has decided to fire Stan Brock after two 3-9 seasons and another disastrous loss to Navy, though Army hasn't had a winning season under any coach since 1996 and had only won more than three games once (4-7 in 2005) in the nine years before Brock was hired. The Midshipmen had already won five in a row by mostly lopsided scores. Is it because he brought back the wishbone? Because I didn't watch Army play this year, and it obviously didn't do much for the win column, but I like the wishbone. It's the Army way ... the American way. If the Academy brings in some spread guy, we might as well all move to France.

Two years . . . sure seems ridiculous.

So much for that. Firing a coach after two seasons is borderline unconscionable. Army actually had a good recruiting haul last year and if they could have added to that this winter, with a full season of running the option under their belts, I'm fairly certain they would have seen some real progress. As Doc said, it's not like Brock took over a winning program; the level of delusion amongst alums is legendary, and this certainly does nothing to change that picture.
Brock's a good man who was doing good foundational work there, and he and that staff really, really connected with those players, kids who deserve all the respect in the world for what they're doing. They also deserve to be successful on the field, but, with the way the West Point brass handles that program, there is little indication that success will arrive anytime soon.

As for Brock, while the overall record stunk, it was clear Army was making progress, even as the year went on. My sense is that something more is going on there than just back-to-back 3-9 records. But as mentioned above, there are some serious delusions of grandeur there...
