Texas 49, Texas A&M 39. The short take on the Longhorns' rocket-fueled escape from College Station is "Colt McCoy remains awesome" -- the senior had the defining game of his season with 478 total yards, five touchdowns and a career night as a runner. With some more perspective and a dash of pessimism, you might add, "And it was a good thing he did," with Texas A&M lighting up the previously impenetrable Longhorn defense for its worst game of the season in pretty much every way imaginable -- the Aggies obliterated previous season highs against the 'Horns by 15 points, 117 total yards and 2.4 yards per play and went almost three full quarters without a punt to close the game.

So it was a rough night for the Big 12's best defense, or as rough as it can be en route to a double-digit win over a hated rival to close the first 12-0 regular season in school history. If any Texas fans are looking to sober up, though, they should compare tonight's sudden Aggie outburst not only to the Longhorns' exemplary efforts this year, but also to the defenses on teams the 'Horns are most trying to emulate in the long run:

Against Texas A&M, the Longhorn defense ...
Allowed more points (39) than any eventual BCS champion has ever allowed in regulation. The only teams to score more than 39 against an eventual BCS champ are Kentucky (43) and Arkansas (50) in upsets over LSU in '07, but both came in multiple overtime sessions. Only three teams (Ole Miss vs. Florida in 2008, Kentucky vs. LSU in 2007 and Alabama vs. LSU in 2007) have managed 30 points against an eventual BCS champ since 2001.

Allowed more yards (531) than any eventual BCS champion has ever allowed in regulation. The only 500-yard games against a final No. 1 this decade were Arkansas' triple-overtime shootout with LSU in '07 (fueled by a pair of soon-to-be first round draft picks, Darren McFadden and Felix Jones) and USC's 574-yard effort against Texas in the 2006 Rose Bowl, and Jarrod Johnson, Christine Michael and Jeff Fuller aren't exactly Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush and Dwayne Jarrett.

Allowed more passing yards (343) than any eventual BCS champion since the '05 Longhorns allowed 369 to Texas Tech, on twice as many passes (64) by the Raiders' Sonny Cumbie as Johnson threw (33) tonight. None of the last three BCS champs has allowed 300 yards passing in a game, and no eventual BCS champ has ever allowed four touchdown passes in one sitting.

Allowed more yards per play (7.6) and per pass (10.4) than any BCS champion has ever allowed in a game.

It could very well be that the 'Horns found themselves on the wrong end of the blossoming of a burgeoning offensive nightmare at A&M, with Johnson looking for all the world like he's finally caught up to the hype and nine of the top 10 skill players around him coming back next year as sophomores and juniors; the Aggies are an exceptionally young offense with a vault of momentum tonight they can draw on throughout the offseason.

The one thing Texas didn't need now, though, is the return of all the questions that had slowly receded as the defense continued to emerged as one of the most improved units in the country. UT had only won two games before tonight by less than 24 points (34-24 over Texas Tech and 16-13 over Oklahoma), both of which corresponded to the point spread going in. That wasn't the case tonight, which has the Longhorns looking at least slightly vulnerable for the first time, at the worst time.

TCU is the best team in Texas. They are the only team to be top 10 in offense and defense. Too bad the broke and corrupt system will not allow them a shot at the MNC. Just hope they do not get stuck playing Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl.

#2 - Texas has the #2 offense and the #7 defense. Giving up 39 points will drop the Texas defense to 10th if LSU doesn't give up a bunch, 9th if they do.

Texas will be fine. Short week, rivalry game on road, plus a near perfect game from JJ and the agros on offense, and it makes some sense. How many times did JJ drop it in perferctly to a well covered receiver. Give the agros credit for actually making plays. They were really good tonight. Their offense was a damn sight better than anything UF or Alabama has put together in the last month.

Texas won, but only because of Colt McCoy. Keep him #1 on the Heisman balloting, but every pollster in the country was able to see that Texas is not a top 3 team. Next ballot should rightfully have Cincy and TCU ahead of Texas. Nebraska was watching very closely and won't make the unforced errors that A&M did.

TCU played a tougher schedule than Texas. Clemson is better than Oklahoma State and BYU and Utah are better than whatever pack of slugs you want to call the third and fourth best teams in the Little 12. The Little 12 is absolutely horrendous this year and Texas played nobody OOC.

'Horns defense looked like they ate too much turkey. Maybe they're not as good as once thought. Good thing the offense showed up, or their ride to the title game might've been de-railed...

By the end of the year, Cincy may have played more tough games than Texas -- at Oregon State, at Pittsburgh - those are quality games.
TCU, not so much. Clemson can't count as a quality win then they lost to MARYLAND.
I'm a playoff guy and I think all unbeatens deserve a chance. But in this crappy system, TCU has not done enough to pass over Texas or Cincy.

why is'nt anyone questioning the how Colt Mccoy and jordan shipley added all the muscle. i know that they are at one of the top programs in the country, but com'on man. shipleys face is mooning like he had a good cycle of growth harmone and mccoy definitely has been on something. i know they are young guys but i think they are cheaters and the university and the ncaa should do something about it. at least look into it.

What will be scary is when UT puts together a complete game. Up until last night the defense/ST has carried the team. Now that the offense is humming, if the LOB steps up UT will be unstoppable.

Please. Short week game against a most bitter rival at the rival's home stadium. A trap game all the way and Texas came through in the end. It's not as if FL and ALA have not had some close wins against unranked teams too. Texas seems a solid top three team to me, and if they beat NU deserve to go the MNC game.

Sorry John. Any team with a decent offense and a solid defense that can make tackles in the open field (IE: any team in the SEC) beats Texas last night.
Texas played HORRIBLE run and coverage defense against a mediocre offense. TCU is a better team, no doubt. Cry all you want about Colt having a career day, but the fact is, he went up against an awful defense with no discipline. The Heisman voters know this and casual football fans know this.
Can someone teach A&M how to tackle????

I'm wondering why no one is chastising Florida for playing close, ugly games against Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU, and even an awful first half against VANDY! Three of those games were at home. The three closest games Texas has been in have come against their biggest rivals - teams that everyone agrees going in that you can throw out the stat book. Everyone expected a shootout in Dallas, but got a defensive battle. Everyone expected a blowout last night, but got a shootout. What's the common denominator? It's a frickin' WIN. Plain and simple. Now, if the Horns give up 30-plus to Nebraska next week and have to win another shootout, that's another thing. But it absolutely horrendous to punish a program for beating a rival, on the road no less, just because they didn't win impressively enough. This is the kind of crap that sullies the greatness of college football.
That being said, I hope Florida and Alabama both lose this weekend and Texas plays TCU for all the marbles!

What allhailcale said. Tcu struggled at air force and Clemson, Florida hung on against arkansas, and Bama was a fat belly away from losing to Tennessee. It's defense had a bad night but this isn't any worse than the air force, Tennessee or alansas games for the aforemenioned teams. People have short memories but people are also stupid.

I agree with allhailcale and scottyc5, why do all you "next day quarterbacks" define an entire season with one game???? Unless you live in Texas you have no earthly idea what the Texas-Texas A&M game even means. Throw out any and all stats, this game is always a toss up no matter who is ranked what. That is the way it is going to be today with Alabama-Auburn, Oklahoma-Oklahoma State and Florida-Florida State. Heaven sakes just enjoy the fun that is college football. Beats the fool out of pro football!!!
