LSU's sky is officially falling

Scroll down or click here for the Doc's weekly game day live blog.

Ole Miss 31, LSU 13. I thought LSU saved its season with last week's comeback over Troy, like, okay, we made it through that, it wasn't pretty, but nothing's really changed -- 10 wins, a New Year's Day Bowl, all those realistic preseason goals were still very much on the table. Teams good enough to come back from 31-3 down in the third quarter are good enough to collect themselves to finish the season more or less according to preseason expectations.

But that's math, when I should have been paying attention to karma: If you view the once-impressive win over Auburn in light of those Tigers' subsequent collapse, LSU hasn't been recognizable as as a top-20 outfit in a single SEC game all year. What, a 24-17 win over South Carolina? You can write off the blowout losses to Florida and Georgia and the nailbiter against Alabama as tough breaks against three of the elite teams in the country; and the turnovers, man, my god, the turnovers! You can write off Troy because it was a win, wasn't it? And a gutsy one at that, that the Tigers thoroughly dominated when necessary.

But as obviously improved and feisty as Ole Miss is, how do you write off a one-touchdown offensive effort to the Rebels, at home? Or allowing them to march 77, 69, 89 and 72 yards for touchdowns before the eight-minute mark of the third quarter? Or falling to fourth place in the SEC West, with the next-to-last-ranked scoring defense in the conference? Jarrett Lee was atrocious again -- 4 of 12 for 49 yards, one sack and an interception -- and a true freshman wound up taking most of the snaps, with predictable results. But the supposedly rugged Tiger running game was buried (39 yards on 1.3 per carry, the worst effort of Les Miles' tenure on both counts) and the secondary was slain, again -- Jevan Snead (275 yards, 2 TDs) is the sixth SEC quarterback in seven games (everyone but Mississippi State) to throw for over 210 yards on a defense that had finished in the top 10 nationally in pass efficiency D six years in a row from 2002-07.

Gary Danielson said late in the game this would go down as the year LSU lost Ryan Perrilloux and was buried under the avalanche of inexperienced, inconsistent, injury-prone and frequently unlucky quarterback play. But no part of this team -- literally, not a single facet -- has been reminiscent of the program that established itself as a national power over the last five years. By the usual Tiger standards, it's just a lost season all the way around.

    It started off so promising,
    The ranking high and full
    BCS-aspirations ran amuck
    Max Hall's aim was swell
    It began with Northern Iowa
    Destruction showed itself
    Against Washington, and UCLA
    We showed our talented wealth.
    Of course the wins continued,
    Against Wyoming, and USU
    New Mexico was slaughtered
    before we faltered against TCU.
But even then, there still was hope
    Our season wasn't over.
    UNLV, then CSU
    Were dispatched in a moment.
San Diego St was no match
    For Collie and Max Hall
    We shredded Air Force's defense
    They couldn't stop the ball.
We gleamed at thoughts of conference wins
We had a chance for the crown
All that stood in BYU's way
was Utah, in their Cinderella gown
But poised to make the BCS
Their defense refused to be stopped
And Max Hall threw the ball away
5 times, leaving us in utter shock
    Our stellar season ruined
All shreds of hope now gone
We're left to wait for next year,
    and this season, ponder on.

No, that doesn't have anything to do with LSU, but I don't much care. I needed to vent.

Perhaps Bo Pelini is missed a bit more than LSU woo! fan realized. Of course, Ryan Perilloux's sprained cerebellum sure didn't help.
Anyone else wonder if Rodriguez and Miles wish they had reset buttons for oh, say, mid-December of last year?

The middle of the Ole Miss d-line is brutal. LSU had 1.3 yards a carry? Don't forget they stoned Tebow on 4th down.

Its simple-Miles could win with Coach Saban's recruits, but the talent level has dropped dramatically as Saban's recruits have graduated.

It's not Saban's recruits. LSU couldn't have expected to match last season in any reasonable conversation. They did lose TWO games last year if you remember. Replacing, arguably, the best defensive coordinator in the nation, a solid starting quarterback, and a stable of defensive draft picks is a lot to ask. LSU will back.

    poo here....
I think Ole Miss is slightly under rated. They have very good talent, not top tier, but pretty good. Now we have a very decent coach to go with that talent. Coach Nutt is a good football game planner. We are about 3 minutes away from being 10-1. I'd say we need to get used to winning, that is the problem. We haven't had any luck since Eli back 5, 6 years ago. And before then, well, not spectacular, but winners to be sure.
I actually believe Ole Miss is a top 25 team. Solid top 25. We should go to the Cotton Bowl, a good bowl. But we may face Texas or Texas Tech, so....who knows. Just happy to be a Rebels fan.
You have to admit this: The Rebels have been in every game, never lost by more than a touchdown, and faced a couple elite teams and many top teams this year. And we are still standing proud. And pretty tough. We can play with anyone in the country, to be sure. I can only think of about three teams that would actually whip us. Not bad....
    GO REBS!!!!

I'm enjoying their disappointing season. Les should have gone to Michigan and had a 3-9 season. LOL

The correlation is simple. The longer nick saban is away from LSU, the worse they are. They have regressed every year under the leadership of the hat. They'll eventually reach a mediocre steady-state and stay there as long as the hat governs this team.

I love that LSU sucks this year, it leaves the door open for Les Miles to give us some of is fake personality speeches. I was hoping for LSU to meet OU in a bowl game so Bob could give him a whoopin.

#13, The SEC is not the strongest division this year, the Big 12 is HOWEVER, the Gators are the best team in the Nation, it's not even debatable. IF FL doesn't get screwed expect anopther great matchup in the BCS Championship game, ya know, somethig to the tune of 70% of the nation voting against FL and OSU putting up 86 total yards of offense.
FL not only has the best offense in the nation, they have one of the best defenses in the nation, the Big 12 isn't even familiar with the term "defense" and FL also has the best SPecial Teams in the nation. FL is going to blow out every team they play including the SEC title game and the BCS title game.
Lastly, regarding Ole Miss who just destroyed LSU (LSU is horrible this year by the way), ALL 4 of Ole MIss' losses are by 7 points or less, they are the most underrated team in the Nation and could easily be sitting at 1-2 losses on the year right now. They have an offense that puts up points and a good defense.
