Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

The rest of the country consistently underestimates the gut level passion of fans in the SEC. It's not that the SEC is better -- you can't prove that -- but its partisans do care more. Way, way more, and you can prove that: They chant harder, they bite harder, they burn former coaches in effigy (right, prior to Saturday's Alabama-LSU game) and sometimes, tragically, they start shooting:

An Escambia County (Alabama) couple died Saturday after an argument over the Alabama/LSU football game ended in shotgun blasts, according to Conecuh County authorities.
[...]
Investigators said witnesses told them that Dennis Smith, an LSU fan, called [Michael] Williams, a fan of the Crimson Tide, after the game Saturday evening and an argument ensued.

Officers said Donna Smith was a relative of Michael Williams' girlfriend.

Soon, the Smiths arrived at Williams' home and the men wound up in a physical altercation, officers said.

Smith retrieved a pistol from his vehicle, and threatened Williams, who armed himself with a shotgun and fired two blasts, striking and killing Dennis Smith, officers said.

Donna Smith then threatened Williams, who shot and killed the woman, they said.

Alcohol was probably involved, if you had to ask. There's not much to add to this terrible, terrible story, matched for grisliness only by the shooting death over a $20 bet between South Carolina and Clemson fans in 2006 or the murder in an argument over high school football in Alabama last summer, except maybe a warning: If you must taunt, please, restrict it to the phone, Internet, office or other well-lit, public locale.

Did you read the article? Taunt from a distance and they'll just drive to your place to get it on. At least the guy who got shot pulled the gun first, so he definitely wanted to take it there. It's his problem that a shotgun wins.

Usually happy about the passion of SEC fandom but this is revolting. Shows the true ignorance of most arguments about something completely out of your control.
Less people have died arguing the presidential race which actually effects our lives.

The odious SEC fans contribute to this kind of thing? Well, they do like to remind everbody of the score.

Yeah, if only we'd restrict ourselves to mass rioting like Big 10 fans, the world would be a much better place.

It sounds like the LSU fan instigated the issue 1st, by calling the Bama fan; 2nd by then driving to the Bama fans' house to start fighting; 3rd by going to his vehicle and getting his pistol 'cause he just got a beatdown from the Bama fan. The Bama fan was just defending himself and I would've done the same thing on my personal property.
Look, all SEC school fans know that the LSU fans are the worst. They are always mean and tasteless at the games. Ask anyone who's been to a game and I'm sure they will atest to rudeless they received from LSU fans. Most SEC school fans tailgate with openness and have fun with everyone. I wouldn't dare go down to Baton Rouge because if LSU loses, expect to possibly receive this same treatment. Heck, you might get it if they win!

From the description given, I can't really fault the Bama fan - someone pulls a gun on me and makes me think for a moment that one of us ain't gonna survive, I know which one I'm choosing. Sad that it had to go that far, though.

Sure, this is sad on some family level, and my sympathies to the kin of all involved, but isn't there some improvement of the species going on here? Valuable lessons: liquor and guns don't mix; cars and guns don't mix; idiots and guns don't mix; and add it all up and SEC fans and guns don't mix. I'm sending off my Darwin Awards nomination.

Pretty tragic, don't you think that fans are that fanatical about their teams...heck, I love my team (OK Sooners) but wouldn't kill a Texas fan just because of that....everyone is entitled to be loyal to whomever....it is a sport and it is fun to cheer and support....I look forward to college football every year....it is exciting...I am sad to hear that sometimes these things take such a tragic toll....

Wow, what a shame. I'm a Florida fan myself but I live in Birmingham so I get to see violent alabama fans a lot. I've seen plenty of fist fights break out over these games (even when alabama beat western kentucky or carolina? last year). It doesn't really surprise me that this involved a tide fan. With the SEC championship coming up, I've been flipped off a few times for my Gators bumper sticker and baseball cap. I'm from Louisiana so I've seen the nastiness of LSU fans too. I think LSU fans may be the reason all of the grocery stores in Louisiana have signs saying it's illegal to have a firearm, licensed or not, in a place that sells alcohol. All I know is what I just read, but I think shooting the wife may take this from self defense to homicide. Football is no reason to get violent, it's just a game.

Fair enough, Justin T, but why shoot the wife too? There absolutely has to be more going on here than a football game - some past enmity or grudge between the shooter and the shootee.

It's a terrible thing that stories like this are true. But Hinton, please don't let yourself or your readership generalize the attitudes of a few senseless and unrepresentative individuals to all the fans of every team of the SEC. Such stereotyping is unconscionable, and makes it frustrating for the civilized SEC fans to give our teams fans a good name. Just like in any large group of people, there are a few bad apples among SEC fans. But we're not all bad apples.

Yeah, it's just inconceivable to me that this would be only based on the outcome of a football game. Maybe if it had happened in the parking lot of the stadium, after the game, between two strangers. But these guys were apparently brothers-in-law (or something similar), plus he shot the wife too.
Clearly the LSU fan/Bama fan angle is being played up by the *evil mainstream media* (that includes you now, Hinton!) to make it a more interesting story.

It's funny how the score is kept on this kind of thing. For instance, the riots in other conferences that cause deaths don't get tallied. SEC football isn't full of murdering fans but there are loose screws everywhere. I don't think a reporter or anyone else can say that this horrible occurence didn't stem from something else. I highly doubt that it was 100% related to football. The article directly states that there was some kind of family relationship going on, which seriously makes the whole story less credible. It would also appear that there are no unpartial witnesses to confirm the story. Break out your common sense people, and think about it longer than 30 seconds.
