Thursday night's late-breaking rumor was true: As expected, LeGarrette Blount -- All-Pac-10 running back and YouTube favorite turned national pariah after taking a shot at Boise State's Byron Hout and attempting to storm the crowd while being restrained by his own coaches following Oregon's disappointing loss in Boise last month -- might have his season-long suspension lifted this year, if he stays in line:

University of Oregon Head Football Coach Chip Kelly has announced that there is potential opportunity for senior running back LeGarrette Blount to be allowed to have his playing status be reinstated prior to the conclusion of the 2009 season.
[...]
Kelly said he developed a plan that Blount would have to follow in order to retain his status with the team. The plan later was revised to encompass a possibility of Blount’s return. ... "He has a rigid set of conditions he must live up to and there are certainly no guarantees in place. This merely provides him the opportunity for my reconsideration in the future should he meet those demands."

No further details on the "rigid set of conditions," specifically, but they're official -- Kelly and Blount signed an agreement outlining the requirements for Blount's return last week in consultation with university lawyers -- and Kelly did set a date for the earliest possible return: Nov. 7 at Stanford. If the Pac-10 signs off on it, that would give him four games down the stretch against the Cardinal, Arizona State, Arizona and Oregon State, plus a very likely bowl date. At the very least, that will amount to a seven-game suspension.

I don't think Oregon cracked under public pressure to reinstate Blount -- from where I sit, there was at least as much pressure in the other direction -- and I don't think his possible return is a hypocritical move, either. Boise State fans don't seem to have a problem with it. It's a very predictable move, actually, and one the school and program began moving toward immediately by insisting Blount would remain in school and on the team, setting him up with counseling and expert advice and limiting his exposure to the media to acts of contrition, including a letter published in the student newspaper on Thursday. This is exactly the sort of "Road to Redemption" campaign you'd expect for a kid and a program with a very large, very public blemish to work their way back into the public's good graces.

This was easy to see coming after the initial tempers cooled. So why issue the "season-long" exile in the first place? A four to six-game suspension would have been an appropriate response, and nobody would have to "back down" or renege on any part of it. Instead, they chose the only way I can think of to make seven games on ice during your senior year look like getting off easy.

They clearly rushed their initial decision as they became frightened over the public's reaction and the possible impact on the school's image. Suspending him for the whole season was a dumb move. It's good to see that they are reversing course finally.

    Listen to Kelly's interview:
    http://www.ducksportsnews.com/blog/2009/10/video-chip-kelly-press-conference-discusses-legarrette-blount/
He had no intention of reinstating Blount at the time and wanted to make a statement. If it was "indefinite" then every week would have been the same question "when is LGB coming back"?
Putting the hammer down got the message across and got the media off his back so that he could set about the actual work of giving LGB a shot at redemption.
Perfectly played by Coach Kelly, who also states that "there is the distinct possibility that LGB will not play for us. He is not being reinstated immediately."

"So why issue the "season-long" exile in the first place?"
Because he screwed up. Royally. And instead of knowing "Eh, just wait 6 games and I'm playing again", he has to EARN his way back on to the team. Remember the old maxim: That which comes too easily, is esteemed too lightly.
    tl;dr version:
If he earns his way back on, he's a lot more likely to value the chance.

Typical Oregon move. That program is shady, and I am not surprised at all that they are reversing course on their decision. Oh, we are 3-1 now, USC and Cal have both lost. Maybe we should get Blount back!

He already had second chances. He was suspended last November after the first quarter of a game due to "not following team rules." He was then suspended indefinitely at the end of last season for missing numerous practices. One occurrence is a fluke, two is a coincidence, three times is a pattern. He has now established a pattern of believing he is above the rules. He clearly has not learned anything from the previous punishments. How many more second chances is he going to have to throw away before people realize he is a remorseless thug who believes he is entitled to do whatever he wants to whomever he wants? Oregon is clearly a better team without him.

#5 "lofarocks??"...the Oregon program is shady? Do you really have any basis to make such a ridiculous claim? This LBG issue was handled in a very awkward way, but as things have settled, I suspect here is a great deal of support on how the university is standing behind this young man, helping him get his life back in order and setting out very strict guidelines to allow him to achieve his dream. Like Kelly said, many would have folded their tent and moved on... but LGB did not and I think Kelly and the University should be applauded for standing behind their student/athlete.

Wow I wish I could say I was surprised, but I'm not. I was impressed that Oregon had made a statement; and now I'm even less impressed with this program. USC and Oregon, come on have some sort of standards for a change---please! You are making the entire PAC10 look bad.

BOOOOO Oregon!!! This is complete BS. That kid does not deserve to play football this year. This is not the U.S. corrections system. This is supposed to be a "respectable" higher education university and it is a privilege to represent them in sport. SPORTSMANSHIP does not involve assault and battery.
The NCAA and the University of Oregon should not even consider this. Bad move.

Good job Oregon. As a Boise State fan at the game, I was really angry. When things settled and unfolded I felt that the season long suspension was way too harsh. This is a nice gesture to get a guy a 2nd chance and see what he makes of it. As for Hout, I'm still a bit puzzled why he faced no discipliaery action but I leave it to Coach Petersen to make the right call.

Where is all the outrage for the punch thrown by the Michigan player? And the denial by his coach?
Oh, nobody cares because there are no Michigan haters (outside of Ohio).

BS......... The guy did not scribble graffiti on another player's helmet behind his back.... He threw a freakin' sucker punch to another player's CHIN when the guy wasn't even looking, then went after the crowd on his way out, AND the police officer trying to restrain him and get his thug butt off the field... This should NOT be allowed under any circumstances whatsoever, EVER... Letting him play again is simply the WRONG message to send to other student athletes everywhere who try to stay within the rules; thumb their noses at player and team disciplines set forth by their Universities... It's just the WRONG thing to do..

I'm sure we all have been forgiven for a mistake we have made in the past. Instead of this whole situation being handled negatively Chip has turned this around to make it positive for his Student/Athlete. I think the university has shown some class dealing with this. It would have been easy to let it go and make him serve his suspension!

What gets me are these people who seem to think they have the inside scoop on knowing exactly (or close enough) what Hout said to Blunt right before he tapped/smacked him on the shoulder. Long before nations were formed, long before recorded history, it has been an inalienable right to protect oneself. I have the right to defend myself if you smack me or come at with me with a real threat of a smacking. It is wrong for you to think you know Hout uttered the en word; Hout smacking Blunt is reason enough for Blunt to smack him back. Also, for those who say Blunt went after so and so, and then went after these others... go back and view all the YouTube vids. Each person Blunt went after smacked or pushed or head butted him first. His teammate--though trying to corral him--head butted him before Blunt shoved him in the helmut, twice. Uniformed guards and coaches were dragging and pushing Blunt. Someone in the crowd had a chair held aloft in a threatening way before Blunt went toward the stands. Yes, Blunt went overboard, and yes I'm a Duck, and yes if you punch me I'll probably let you get away with it, but all you have to do is not go after Blunt and he probably won't go after you. I don't swat at bees very often; bees don't sting me very often.

    Bad move Ducks!
Oregon now has a chance at he Rose Bowl-- and needs Blount to get them over the top.
Before today, Oregon had positioned itself as a clean program that made sure players were normal students and normal citizens.
If LGB was just a student and not an NFL caliber football player, the U of O would have kicked his butt out of college.
I think today's actions will help recruit more thugs. Why nto recruit the Crips that no longer go to U of Colorado?

The possibility of him returning in November means his season is lost. That's just to harsh a punishment for punching someone. He is a "KID" and he made a bad impulse decision. One game, two at the most. Season? Come on Oregon, let him back now.
Someone needs to have the Boise St. player and coach campaign to let this kid have some chance to redeem himself on and off the field at the same time. It would show a lot of class if they did and would set a positive example. No one wants to see this kid out for the season.

And Tim Tebo got what he deserved, if he was super man he wouldnt have gotton the concussion. SEC is over rated and their player are flunkies. Take a good look at their graduation rate in the SEC compared to all other conferencs
