Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

With all the public reprimanding it's going to be doing over the next few weeks against coaches who publicly criticize officials, the SEC needs a few ground rules. One of those, it seems, it a "three strikes, you're out policy." See, for example, Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin, who was just hit with a public reprimand from the league office today for criticizing officials who neglected to throw a flag on Alabama's Terrence Cody, the behemoth defensive tackle who ditched his helmet after blocking the Vols' game-winning field goal attempt as time expired, even though the live ball was still sitting on the turf as the celebration ensued. (The league office, strangely, admitted Cody's helmet toss before the end of the play was a penalty, but not an enforceable one.)

This is Kiffin's second public reprimand in nine months, following a stern admonition from SEC commissioner Mike Slive over Kiffin's off-the-cuff (and incorrect) allegation that Florida coach Urban Meyer had committed a recruiting violation, and it sounds like his third could earn him more than a lecture from Slive:

Tennessee Coach Lane Kiffin received his second public reprimand from the Southeastern Conference on Monday afternoon, meaning a third strike could result in additional penalties or even suspension.

Commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement that Kiffin violated the conference Code of Ethics when criticizing officials regarding Saturday's 12-10 loss to No. 2 Alabama.

Just the notion of a headline reading "Kiffin suspended" is enough to send schadenfreude meters across the South into hyper-drive, even if the odds of it actually happening are almost too long to contemplate.

But certainly they're higher since the SEC began calling out refs itself, beginning with the phantom tauting call on A.J. Green in Georgia's loss to LSU earlier this month and escalating with last week's apology for a phantom unnecessary toughness call by the same crew against Arkansas' Malcolm Sheppard in the Razorbacks' loss to Florida, leading to a two-week suspension for said crew.

Still, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino was publicly reprimanded for criticizing the same call the SEC had already admitted was wrong, and Kiffin's reprimand today is accompanied by a wag of the finger at Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, who openly criticized officials for a number of calls in his team's loss to Florida, notably a Gator interception return for touchdown that was apparently fumbled at the one and recovered by MSU in its own end zone for a touchback, but not overturned on replay. Now that the SEC office has made it a practice to openly admit its officials are less than perfect on a somewhat regular basis, coaches have been very fast to agree with them. Based on its corrections for the penalties against Green and Sheppard, there's no reason the SEC shouldn't issue a similar correction stating that Dustin Doe fumbled the ball before crossing the MSU goal line -- that's much less of a judgment call than either of the phantom penalties.

But this has to stop somewhere, lest the coaches' impudence reach a fever pitch. What's the over/under on malcontent coaches next week? Two? Three? Assuming Georgia's able to keep it close enough against Florida in the Cocktail Party for a sketchy call to matter, I've got UGA coach Mark Richt in the pool. There's always something to pin on the refs, if you're so inclined, and right now, everyone seems very inclined.

No dog in the fight, but it would have been a travesty had the Vols been granted 15 yards and a second attempt in that situation. If Kiffin had any integrity, he wouldn't have even brought it up.

Hey UT fans, Cody could have taken off all his clothes and performed a strip tease and the officials still couldn't call a penalty!! Stop whining.

Even Bobby Johnson had complaints today about a touchdown that really wasn't by South Carolina.
When Vandy starts complaining, you KNOW there's something wrong.

Notice Richt is nowhere in these headlines even though his team got "screwed" on one of these calls.

Lane can whine all he wants about that, fact is, his kicker drove the ball straight into the line...sure a 44 yarder is a somewhat long field goal, but he completely blew it on that one. it's not secret that the SEC officials are having an awful year...just clean house.

Coaches whining about officiating, even thugh that in itself is a rules violation. I guess the rules only apply when they benefit their own team. Talking out of both sides of their mouths... Guess I can't blame them, until the penalties escalate to more than a ridiculous reprimand. Grow some balls, SEC, or just shut up.

To be fair, you'd be hard-pressed to find any official, anywhere in the country, who would have been willing to throw a flag on Cody on Saturday. Said official probably would not make it out of the state of Alabama alive.

how the heck is it not an enforceable penalty throw the flag and enforce it. The ball was live, the flag should have been thrown, re-kick and see what happens. You Bama fans can suck it, they admitted that it was a penalty. The refs are probably just scared that if they throw that flag for unsportsmanlike like conduct they will get suspended.

A story about officiating and nothing is said about the officiating in UF games? Really? The supposed #1 team has looked horrible against 2 unranked teams with losing records. And without the help of a few very questionable calls, the games could have ended up differently. Bad calls are always going to happen - thats the joy of human nature. But when it is so blatant and obvious, then the officials review a call only to still get it wrong even though the rest of the world watching the game, looking at the same replays, see's the truth, AND officials get suspended.... its pretty obvious the officials are almost scared to make a call against UF in a crucial situation. And Gator fans, dont even think about saying you won because of the great Tebow. The last game, in the fourth quarter, Tebow was 1-4 passing with a total of 3 yards, threw a interception returned for a TD, AND had 4 rushes for a whopping 11 yards. And he's still the leader for the Heisman? WHY?!?!?

Actually I take the first statement back. A small comment was made about the officiating in UF games. "Apparently fumbled on a interception returd for a TD"??? What replay were you watching? It as fumbled. Just another example.

EricK, please learn the rules of football before you post. UT could not have re-kicked even if the penalty flag was thrown. The results of the penalty flag would have still given Bama the ball with a 15 yard penalty.

Penalty was before the bama players recovered the football. It means instead of 44yd field goal kick, it would've been 29yd.

Two drives by UT into Bama territory were wiped out by phantom penalties. He didn't want to risk getting screwed by the officials again and being knocked out of FG range. UT was 3rd best in the country in penalties while Bama was around 60th, but the flagged UT 10 times to Bama's one. See a trend? As far as Slive reprimanding Kiffin, GO AHEAD. Suspend him if you will. Slive has only ticked off UT's coaches, players, and fans. The Vols are out for blood now, and with the way they've been getting better week to week, I feel sorry for their remaining five opponents. Granted, Cody throwing his helmet has no effect on the result whatsoever, but the officiating in favor of UF, Bama, and LSU is friggin' rediculous. I mean come on, a penalty in which a team cannot be penalized? Are you kidding me?

The general lack of knowledge as to the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by UT fans is outright laughable. EVEN IF A FLAG IS THROWN BY THE REFS, BAMA WOULD STILL GET THE BALL, BUT WOULD HAVE A 15 YARD PENALTY.
IN OTHER WORDS, UT WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN ANOTHER CHANCE TO KICK THE BALL. I REPEAT, YOU WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN ANOTHER SHOT AT A FIELD GOAL.
You were lucky to get that no holding call to set up the field goal, you were also lucky to get that onside kick. You were not lucky enough to win the game. UT fans are the sorest losers in existence. Keep bringing up penalties and the BS "OMG UF and Bama have the refs in their pockets" arguments. You lost. Goodbye.

    - Did you watch the game? The UT penalties were all pretty cut and dry. UT was also spared a blatant pass interference call on a TD pass to Julio, which would have given Bama a fresh set of downs on the three yard line.

If true, more evidence that Kiffin is a moron. If he just made this up as an excuse, what a crybaby.
