Dr. Saturday - NCAAF

When a handful of USC players formed a Facebook group called "White Nation," it was shrugged off as an inside joke among teammates. When pictures of Anthony Bowman and Domonique Davis flashing cash and liquor bottles on Douglas' Facebook page made the rounds the same week a warrant was issued for Douglas' arrest on credit card fraud, Iowa and other schools promised enhanced vigilance of their players' presence on the Web. When an obscure backup running back at Wake Forest vowed to "blow up campus" on his Facebook page, he was quickly booted from the team; the same fate awaited Texas' Buck Burnette when he posted a racist tagline about newly-elected Barack Obama.

By comparison, I have no idea what might happen to Florida lineman Jim Tartt, but as of Tuesday, he apparently brings us one step closer to an outright ban on Facebook from athletic departments across the country:

I say "apparently" out of excessive caution, in the very unlikely case we're being had here by a very detail-oriented Oklahoma prankster or something (having brought up the remote possibility, I should stress there is zero evidence that is the case). Assuming this is what it looks like, joining a group called "Africa Gives Nothing To The World But AIDS" does not exactly convey the most sophisticated understanding of our increasingly interconnected world from a student nearing a degree in the human sciences. As Spence Hall notes, Tartt –– like teammates Brandon Antwine, Jamaal Deveaux, Cornelius Ingram, Terron Sanders, Brandon Spikes, Jason Watkins and Mon Williams, all of whom might be interested in the sentiment expressed here –– is listed as an anthropology major, and is quite possibly the worst anthropology major who has ever been steered into the discipline. Perhaps he missed the day where they explained the entire point of anthropology as a field of study?

Is joining necessarily and endorsement? I join all kinds of groups just to see what it is all about and what kind fo people would join it without necessarily endorsing the group. Hence my membership in the Friend of Abba group.

Clearly, he is in that very sad, closeted group of douchebags known as the "self-loathing douchebag." Maybe this was his way of coming out.

Can someone be punished for political beliefs? Even if they are really, really, really stupid and disgusting ones?

To even bring up the "remote possibility" that this might be the handiwork of someone from Oklahoma (the state OR the university) without any proof is irresponsible journalism at its best. We don't play that game.

The stupidity of all of these comments amazes me. First to join a discussion group doesn't imply by action that you support the group or it's content, there are a myriad reasons one would do so. One why might be for the simple reasons of learning what the content is and how points or topics are being put forth or advanced. For his major, this might provide viewpoints and arguments which he could counter and produce in a paper for class. For the love of pete, it could have been to even go there and counter argue!! Get a grip, even if he thought there was some merit to joining the group outside of discussion and viewpoint material, he has a private right to free speech do so under the first amendment!! It's none of anyone's business what he finds interesting or why!! The only problem I would have is his lack of poor judgment in that a facebook is not private unless you make it so!! He didn't do so, if this is true! He's still a young man, this is not criminal, and poor judgment is not a crime unless it results in one!!

As a private person they should not be punished for beliefs but as a representative of the campus yes you can and should be. I am sorry but when you accept an athletic scholarship you are agreeing to represent the campus in a positive way, after signing the scholarship offer there is no way you can miss this.

Matthew S., your explanation does indeed seem plausible. Pranksterism among males from late teens to early twenties (and farther) is fairly rampant.

Folks, most of you are very mis-led in the legalities of how you can punish or punitively deal with [profane]s like the person in question....Ok....No you cannot legally be punished for beliefs or opinions unless they directly result in a crime being committed no matter how horrendous or stupid they may be.....Yet making fun of them, hounding them when you see them and blackballing their ass throughout every inch of earth they walk should do the trick and is very legal in it's own right....So yeah hound the crap out of that piece of trash til he understands that this just slipping under the legal radar is not acceptable and for everyone else who wants to shun the public responsibility to get their beliefs in check if they want to make them public, you are the exact same trash that he is and if you share any part of the same beliefs as he does then fine, just keep them to yourself....This country allows you to have your beliefs but if they are detremental or just MENTAL keep it to yourself.....

in his defense, sometimes i join a group just to disagree with a member and then leave the group, as only members can post on the wall and discussion board.
