Details continue to trickle out of Connecticut on the murder of UConn cornerback Jasper Howard, stabbed to death just after midnight on Sunday morning, during a fight outside a school-sponsored Homecoming dance where a fire alarm had been pulled. We learned Sunday that Howard's girlfriend is pregnant, andtoday coach Randy Edsall said two teammates were with him to the end -- one of them a victim himself, and the other frantically attempting to administer first aid to Howard:

... Edsall wouldn’t identify the teammates or say how many players witnessed the fight that led to the death of 20-year-old Jasper Howard. A second player also was stabbed, but sustained only minor injuries.

"One had Jasper in his arms and the other was pressuring where the wound went in and had blood on his hands,” Edsall said. “And those two young men are pretty deeply affected right now."

The state's medical examiner said today Howard died from a single stab wound to the abdomen. The latest AP account adds a note of tragic irony: "Howard, a junior and starting cornerback, came to the school to get away from the violence on the streets of his hometown of Miami." Edsall was planning to meet Howard's family today.

Police have arrested a 21-year-old Hartford man, Johnny Hood, in connection with the death, but he's not charged with murder -- he's being held for interfering with an officer, breach of peace and giving police a false name, though his $100,000 bond suggests his custody is more valuable than those charges suggest. In police statements, Hood identified the other player who was stabbed, wide receiver Brian Parker -- another Floridian, from Sarasota -- who is academically ineligible this year. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

The Hartford Courant notes that a dozen state troopers assigned to off-campus partying a mile from the stabbing weren't notified for more than two hours, and has a photo gallery of the ongoing investigation and campus condolences.
