Buffalo 42, Ball State 28. Despite being outgained by 200 yards, Buffalo returned two Ball State fumbles 92 and 74 yards for touchdowns and scored three touchdowns on drives that began inside the BSU 30 after another pair of Cardinal turnovers and a long kickoff return. If Ball State hangs on to the ball, it's the MAC champion today at 13-0.
Instead, it boots the title game into the Bulls' hands and Turner Gill's stock inches ever upward. For a long time, I did a feature on my old site called the "Buffalo Line Watch," because the Bulls were never favored to win a game; UB was 12-79 from 1999-2006, won more than two games only once (3-8 in 2001) and remained the most reliably hopeless outfit anywhere, year after year. I had to discontinue the feature once Gill arrived, and now -- four Ball State fumbles or not -- that hopeless outfit is the champion of its conference in his third year. Somebody throw dump trucks full of money at this man.

You want Turner Gill to coach in a "big conference"? Make Buffalo a big conference team, as they should be.

Let's go bigger than that. When a school that hires a black man to serve as the school's head football coach, we must all buy a hat, a sweatshirt, something. We need to show our support for the decision. What better way to show that support than buying stuff from the school?

1) He refused the Nebraska job last year, saying that he still had work to do in Buffalo. This makes other ADs believe that he is committed to the Buffalo program and it would take exceptional effort to pry him away.
2) Gill's work in making Buffalo a contending program will be dismissed by many because it was done in Buffalo, a place that is generally dismissed and denigrated by the rest of the nation. If you live, coach or play in Buffalo, no matter what the sport or the level, you still have to be five times better to be even considered to be half as good.
3) For some programs, it will be for the same reason Buffalo refused the 1958 Tangerine Bowl bid...there is still exceptionally blatant racism through much of college football in the coaching and AD ranks. You think Gill would be a fit in Auburn? There would be rioting.
