Buffalo 42, Ball State 28. Despite being outgained by 200 yards, Buffalo returned two Ball State fumbles 92 and 74 yards for touchdowns and scored three touchdowns on drives that began inside the BSU 30 after another pair of Cardinal turnovers and a long kickoff return. If Ball State hangs on to the ball, it's the MAC champion today at 13-0.

Instead, it boots the title game into the Bulls' hands and Turner Gill's stock inches ever upward. For a long time, I did a feature on my old site called the "Buffalo Line Watch," because the Bulls were never favored to win a game; UB was 12-79 from 1999-2006, won more than two games only once (3-8 in 2001) and remained the most reliably hopeless outfit anywhere, year after year. I had to discontinue the feature once Gill arrived, and now -- four Ball State fumbles or not -- that hopeless outfit is the champion of its conference in his third year. Somebody throw dump trucks full of money at this man.

All the Tennessee fans who were confused about why people panned their choice of Lane Kiffin need to look at this guy. He took a program from basically where FIU was last season to a MAC championship in just three years. When you're looking for an up-and-coming coach, that's the sort of thing that makes a guy less of a risk than a person with two years as a co-offensive coordinator and 1.5 years in the Al Davis Circus.
And I have to say, that is an awesome photo.

Great point Year2. Gill has accomplished something, something remarkable when you think about it. It took Greg Schiano like what, seven years to accomplish something like this and then they wanted to give him the Miami HC job. Well, it only took Gill three years. Auburn should take a long look at this guy, as should all other schools needing a new coach.

Or we could go in another direction...the Big East should tender an invitation to UB to join the conference. With now the football and basketball programs being highly competitive, it is long past time for the largest school in the SUNY system to join the big time.
You want Turner Gill to coach in a "big conference"? Make Buffalo a big conference team, as they should be.

As long as we're dreaming...UB is a better match for the Big Ten: AAU member, USN&WR Tier I, law school, medical school, dental school, pharmacy school, major bioinformatics research center. UB already stacks up with the Big Ten academically. UB is a long way from matching up athletically. The Big Ten would have to be patient and give time for UB to develop, but if they want to be proactive and go outside the box, they just consider UB.

If Syracuse wanted to show it had balls, then they would hire Turner Gill as their next head coach. When UB chose Gill, I bought a UB sweatshirt because I wanted to show my support for UB's decision. I will buy and wear a sweatshirt from the next school that hires Gill.
Let's go bigger than that. When a school that hires a black man to serve as the school's head football coach, we must all buy a hat, a sweatshirt, something. We need to show our support for the decision. What better way to show that support than buying stuff from the school?

Why Gil's name has not been mentioned in every coaching opportunity so far this year is beyond me, as well. His job at Buffalo has been noteworthy. If he is not poached by a bigger school, it had better be only because he feels loyalty to the Bills and wants to stay a while longer.

Gill's name has not been mentioned in every coaching opportunity for three reasons:
    1) He refused the Nebraska job last year, saying that he still had work to do in Buffalo. This makes other ADs believe that he is committed to the Buffalo program and it would take exceptional effort to pry him away.
    2) Gill's work in making Buffalo a contending program will be dismissed by many because it was done in Buffalo, a place that is generally dismissed and denigrated by the rest of the nation. If you live, coach or play in Buffalo, no matter what the sport or the level, you still have to be five times better to be even considered to be half as good.
    3) For some programs, it will be for the same reason Buffalo refused the 1958 Tangerine Bowl bid...there is still exceptionally blatant racism through much of college football in the coaching and AD ranks. You think Gill would be a fit in Auburn? There would be rioting.

Excuse me, but if you don't think that Coach Turner Gill would be very much welcomed at Auburn University, you have not been reading the Auburn message boards. He is the obvious fan favorite. Auburn fans are excited about his character and attitude as much as his winning potential. There is even a button circulating with coach Gill's picture and the words "gill in "09. Come on down Coach Gill, you will be warmly welcomed by the Auburn family!
